After a prolonged stalemate following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old female doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the West Bengal government headed by Mamta Banerjee has finally decided to remove the police commissioner, Kolkata, and two other health officials.

Apart from the Commissioner of Police, Director of Medical Education (DME) Kaustav Nayak, and Director of Health Service (DHS) Debasish Halder have been removed. This comes a day after the protesting junior doctors demanded the removal of the Commissioner of Police, DME, and DHS. Swapan Soren has been appointed the new DHS while Suparna Dutta, OSD (Medical Education) will work in place of DME temporarily.
The West Bengal government has also conceded most of the demands of the Junior Doctor including their safety and security at all the government-run hospitals.
The doctors in West Bengal had been on strike since August 9, following the rape and murder if one of their colleagues inside the hospital.
Investigations into this rape and murder were still going on and the CBI has arrested the former Principal RG Kar Hospital Dr Sandeep Ghosh on charges of erasing evidence after the rape and murder. The SHO of the area has also been arrested for his dubious role in this case.

Following demands of the agitating doctors, Deputy Commissioner of North Division Abhishek Gupta was removed. Dipak Sarkar has been appointed the new DC-North Division. Sarkar is presently DC-East Siliguri PC.

The junior doctors have demanded the resignation of DC-North Gupta, following allegations by the parents of the deceased doctor, who claimed that Gupta offered them money when the body of their daughter was lying at their home.

“We welcome the decision of the Chief Minister about the removal of the CP, DME, and DHS. We are holding the protest now,” the agitating doctors said.

“We will let everyone know about our decision following our meeting,” a protesting doctor said. “We have heard about the Supreme Court’s order today.”
