India celebrated a watershed moment in judo at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as 23-year-old Asmita Dey etched her name into sporting history by capturing the women’s 48kg gold medal.
Displaying remarkable composure and tactical brilliance, she defeated Canada’s Heidi Quach 2-1 in a gripping final to become the first Indian judoka to claim a Commonwealth Games gold medal in the discipline.
Behind the glittering medal lies a story of grit, sacrifice and unwavering determination.
Raised in a remote village of Tripura, Asmita grew up amid severe financial hardship.
Her late father earned barely ₹300 a day repairing bicycles, while the family struggled to make ends meet in a modest mud house.
Those humble beginnings make her triumph all the more inspiring, underlining how relentless perseverance can overcome even the harshest circumstances.
The victory also shines a light on the difficult road travelled by countless Indian athletes who battle poverty long before they compete against international rivals.
Limited resources, uncertain futures and financial insecurity often shadow their sporting ambitions.
Asmita has now broken through those barriers, transforming years of hardship into a moment that will forever remain part of Indian sporting history.
The emotional weight of the achievement became evident moments after the final when Asmita remembered her father, whose death from a brain stroke seven years ago nearly shattered her dreams.
Fighting back tears, she said his passing had left her believing that everything was over because he had been the strongest pillar behind her ambitions.
Recalling her roots, the champion said she came from a tiny village where aspirations of global sporting success were almost unimaginable.
Yet, she said, her father never allowed circumstances to limit her dreams and constantly encouraged her to believe that she could achieve something extraordinary on the international stage.
Asmita’s journey changed course when she was just 12 years old after being spotted by veteran coach Manik Lal Deb, who brought her to the Agartala Sports Hostel.
Remembering their first meeting, Deb recalled the heartfelt appeal made by her father before entrusting his daughter to the academy.
With folded hopes, he requested the coach to help Asmita become someone who could accomplish something meaningful in life.
Deb assured him that dedication and hard work would open every door.
The coach said Asmita displayed exceptional athletic qualities from the very beginning.
Although physically small, she possessed explosive speed, outstanding reflexes, and impressive coordination that immediately distinguished her from other children.
According to Deb, the selection process focused more on identifying youngsters with natural physical ability than on finding trained judokas, and Asmita’s exceptional movement convinced the coaches that she had immense potential.
Deb also believes that sending Asmita to the sports hostel eased some of the family’s financial burden, but far more important was her father’s dream of allowing his daughter to escape poverty through sport.
That dream, once born in a small Tripura village, has now culminated in India’s first Commonwealth Games judo gold, turning an ordinary family’s struggle into an extraordinary national achievement.

ग्लासगो में आयोजित 2026 राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों में भारत ने जूडो के इतिहास का सबसे सुनहरा अध्याय लिखा, जब 23 वर्षीय अस्मिता डे ने महिला 48 किलोग्राम वर्ग का स्वर्ण पदक जीतकर नया कीर्तिमान स्थापित किया।
फाइनल मुकाबले में उन्होंने कनाडा की हेडी क्वाच को 2-1 से पराजित करते हुए राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों के जूडो प्रतियोगिता में स्वर्ण जीतने वाली पहली भारतीय खिलाड़ी बनने का गौरव हासिल किया।
इस ऐतिहासिक सफलता के पीछे संघर्ष, त्याग और अटूट संकल्प की लंबी कहानी छिपी है। त्रिपुरा के एक छोटे से गांव में पली-बढ़ी अस्मिता ने बेहद अभावों में बचपन बिताया।
उनके दिवंगत पिता साइकिलों की मरम्मत कर प्रतिदिन लगभग 300 रुपये कमाते थे और पूरा परिवार मिट्टी के साधारण घर में रहता था।
ऐसे हालात से निकलकर विश्व मंच पर देश का नाम रोशन करना उनकी उपलब्धि को और भी असाधारण बना देता है।
भारत में अनेक प्रतिभाशाली खिलाड़ी आर्थिक तंगी और सीमित संसाधनों से जूझते हुए अपने सपनों को आकार देते हैं।
खेलों में उत्कृष्ट प्रदर्शन करने से पहले उन्हें जीवन की कठिन परीक्षाओं से गुजरना पड़ता है।
अस्मिता ने इन्हीं बाधाओं को पीछे छोड़ते हुए यह साबित कर दिया कि दृढ़ इच्छाशक्ति और अथक मेहनत किसी भी विपरीत परिस्थिति को परास्त कर सकती है।
स्वर्ण पदक जीतने के बाद भावुक हुईं अस्मिता ने अपने पिता को याद किया, जिनका सात वर्ष पहले ब्रेन स्ट्रोक के कारण निधन हो गया था।
आंखों में आंसू लिए उन्होंने कहा कि पिता के जाने के बाद उन्हें लगा था कि उनकी दुनिया ही उजड़ गई है, क्योंकि वही उनके सबसे बड़े सहारे और प्रेरणा स्रोत थे।
अपनी भावनाएं साझा करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि वह त्रिपुरा के एक बेहद छोटे गांव से आती हैं, जहां इतनी बड़ी उपलब्धियों के सपने भी कम ही देखे जाते हैं।
बावजूद इसके, उनके पिता ने हमेशा उन्हें आगे बढ़ने, बड़े लक्ष्य तय करने और उन्हें हासिल करने का हौसला दिया।
असमिता की प्रतिभा को पहली बार तब पहचान मिली जब वह मात्र 12 वर्ष की थीं। उस समय अगरतला स्पोर्ट्स हॉस्टल के जूडो प्रशिक्षक मणिक लाल देब की नजर उन पर पड़ी।
देब को आज भी वह दिन याद है, जब अस्मिता के पिता बेटी को उनके सुपुर्द करने पहुंचे थे।
उन्होंने विनम्रता से कोच से आग्रह किया था कि उनकी बेटी को ऐसा मुकाम दिलाने में मदद करें जिससे वह जीवन में कुछ बड़ा कर सके।
प्रशिक्षक ने उन्हें भरोसा दिलाया कि यदि अस्मिता मेहनत करती रही तो सफलता का रास्ता स्वयं बन जाएगा।
मणिक लाल देब के अनुसार, अस्मिता ने शुरुआती दिनों से ही अपनी असाधारण शारीरिक क्षमता से सबको प्रभावित कर दिया था।
कद में छोटी होने के बावजूद उनकी फुर्ती, विस्फोटक गति और बेहतरीन शारीरिक नियंत्रण उन्हें अन्य बच्चों से अलग बनाते थे।
उन्होंने बताया कि चयन के दौरान प्रशिक्षित जूडो खिलाड़ियों की नहीं, बल्कि स्वाभाविक शारीरिक दक्षता और बेहतर मोटर क्षमता वाले बच्चों की तलाश की जा रही थी, और अस्मिता इन सभी कसौटियों पर पूरी तरह खरी उतरीं।
कोच का मानना है कि स्पोर्ट्स हॉस्टल भेजने से परिवार पर आर्थिक बोझ कुछ कम अवश्य हुआ, लेकिन उससे कहीं अधिक महत्वपूर्ण था पिता का वह सपना, जिसमें वह अपनी बेटी को गरीबी और अभावों से बाहर निकलते देखना चाहते थे।
आज वही सपना भारत के पहले राष्ट्रमंडल जूडो स्वर्ण पदक के रूप में साकार हुआ है और अस्मिता डे की कहानी देशभर के लाखों युवाओं के लिए प्रेरणा का अमिट स्रोत बन गई है।
