From Pregnancy to Schooling, Yogi Puts Child Nutrition at Centre of UP Campaign

UP CM highlights food quality, school amenities and community participation as National Nutrition Month begins across the state.

Varanasi: The first 1,000 days of a child’s life—from pregnancy through the early years—must receive sustained attention if the fight against malnutrition is to succeed, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Wednesday while launching the ninth National Nutrition Month in Varanasi.

Rather than limiting the campaign to food distribution, Adityanath called for a broader approach that combines nutritious diets, quality meals, early childhood learning, maternal support and stronger participation from local communities.

The month-long programme will run from September 9 to October 8 and focus on pregnant and lactating women, children, adolescent girls and their families.

The chief minister placed particular emphasis on what children actually receive on their plates.

He advocated greater dietary variety and adequate protein, while urging Anganwadi centres to serve meals that are fresh, hot and appealing.

He suggested that vegetables such as carrots could be added to familiar preparations like moong dal khichdi to improve both nutrition and children’s interest in eating the meal.

According to Adityanath, the state’s nutrition infrastructure now covers a vast network.

Around 1.90 lakh Anganwadi centres have been sanctioned across Uttar Pradesh, with services being delivered through 897 Child Development Projects.

He said approximately 1.56 crore beneficiaries receive nutrition-related services every month.

The scale of child-focused interventions was also highlighted at the event.

The chief minister said about 35.46 lakh children are currently being served hot-cooked meals, while the health of nearly 46 lakh children is being tracked through regular monitoring of indicators including weight and stunting.

Adityanath used the occasion to draw a connection between nutrition and the environment in which children study. Under Operation Kayakalp, he said, around 1.36 lakh schools have been upgraded with improved buildings and essential facilities.

Drinking water, separate toilets for boys and girls, and a better learning environment have been among the areas receiving attention.

He said an earlier study had pointed towards the absence of basic amenities—including food, water and sanitation—as one of the factors linked to children leaving school between Classes 3 and 7.

Girls, he said, were particularly affected. Improvements in school infrastructure have helped address the problem, according to the chief minister.

The programme also became an occasion for Adityanath to attack previous state administrations.

He alleged that the distribution of supplementary nutrition for children had once been affected by the influence of what he called the “liquor mafia”.

He further claimed that supplies sometimes failed to reach Anganwadi centres for as long as three months and that essential facilities were missing at some centres.

Beyond primary and middle-school infrastructure, the government has also sought to restore older higher-secondary institutions, Adityanath said.

Financial assistance has been extended to government and government-aided inter colleges that are more than 40 years old, while approximately 2,100 inter colleges have been revived, he claimed.

The chief minister said the current nutrition drive should also encourage families and communities to take greater ownership of children’s well-being.

Alongside dietary diversity and hot meals, he identified early childhood education and the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana as important components of the campaign.

The event was attended by Union Ministers Annapurna Devi and Savitri Thakur.

The launch marked the beginning of the state’s month-long focus on improving nutrition, maternal care and child health.
