Himachal Pradesh Tragedy: Massive Boulder Crushes Vehicle in Lahaul-Spiti, 13 Killed Including Six-Month-Old Infant
Himachal Pradesh: A devastating landslide claimed 13 lives in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul-Spiti district on Friday after a gigantic boulder came crashing down a mountainside and smashed a passenger vehicle travelling along the treacherous Udaipur-Killar road. Among those killed was a six-month-old infant, officials confirmed.
The fatal accident occurred near Kaddu Nallah, around 60 kilometres from Lahaul Valley, when a Tata Sumo carrying passengers from Kullu to the remote Pangi Valley was struck by falling rocks.
According to officials, the impact of the massive boulder completely crushed the vehicle, leaving no chance of survival for those inside.
Most of the victims belonged to Pangi Valley, a remote tribal region in Chamba district. Preliminary findings revealed that the passengers had been forced to halt at Tindi on Thursday night after the Udaipur-Killar road was blocked due to adverse conditions.
Following the reopening of the route on Friday morning, they resumed their journey, only to meet with the fatal accident near Kaddu Nallah.
Providing details of the incident, Lahaul-Spiti Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana said the vehicle was buried beneath debris after a landslide accompanied by heavy rockfall struck the Sansari Nala-Killar-Thirot-Tandi road.
All 13 occupants of the Tata Sumo, including its driver, lost their lives in the disaster.
Emergency rescue operations were launched immediately after the tragedy, with personnel from the police, district administration and the Border Roads Organisation working jointly to remove debris and recover the victims.
Authorities said efforts to establish the identities of all those killed were continuing.
Officials also stated that the district administration was maintaining constant surveillance over the situation and closely coordinating rescue as well as relief operations to ensure that every possible measure was taken at the disaster site.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu directed the Deputy Commissioner to rush to the accident location and personally oversee the rescue and relief efforts.
He also instructed district authorities to extend every possible assistance and support to the bereaved families of those who lost their lives.
Pangi Sub-Divisional Magistrate Amandeep Singh said teams from the Lahaul-Spiti Police, along with officials of the local administration, reached the spot soon after information about the incident was received and immediately began rescue operations despite difficult terrain.
Appealing to the public to exercise extreme caution, Singh advised people to avoid travelling through landslide-prone mountain roads during the ongoing spell of heavy rainfall.
He urged travellers to strictly follow weather alerts and official advisories before undertaking journeys in the hilly region.
Meanwhile, Lahaul-Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana said the deceased included seven men, four women and a six-month-old infant, whose gender is yet to be confirmed.
She added that one victim has not been identified so far and that a DNA examination would be conducted to establish the person’s identity.

हिमाचल प्रदेश के लाहौल-स्पीति जिले में शुक्रवार को एक भीषण प्राकृतिक हादसे में 13 लोगों की जान चली गई, जब पहाड़ी से एक विशाल चट्टान टूटकर नीचे गिरी और यात्रियों से भरे एक वाहन को पूरी तरह कुचल दिया।
मृतकों में छह माह का एक शिशु भी शामिल है। प्रशासन ने घटना की पुष्टि करते हुए इसे हाल के वर्षों की सबसे दर्दनाक सड़क दुर्घटनाओं में से एक बताया है।
यह हादसा लाहौल घाटी से लगभग 60 किलोमीटर दूर उडैपुर-किलाड़ मार्ग पर स्थित कद्दू नाला के समीप हुआ। कुल्लू से दुर्गम पांगी घाटी की ओर जा रही टाटा सूमो अचानक पहाड़ी से गिरते विशाल पत्थरों की चपेट में आ गई।
अधिकारियों के अनुसार, एक भारी-भरकम चट्टान सीधे वाहन पर आ गिरी, जिससे वह पूरी तरह दब गया और उसमें सवार किसी भी व्यक्ति को बचने का अवसर नहीं मिला।
मृतकों में अधिकांश लोग चंबा जिले की दूरस्थ जनजातीय पांगी घाटी के निवासी थे। प्रारंभिक जांच में सामने आया है कि सड़क बंद होने के कारण यात्रियों ने गुरुवार रात टिंडी में रुककर रात बिताई थी।
शुक्रवार सुबह मार्ग खुलने के बाद उन्होंने अपनी यात्रा दोबारा शुरू की, लेकिन कद्दू नाला के निकट पहुंचते ही यह दर्दनाक हादसा हो गया।
घटना की जानकारी देते हुए लाहौल-स्पीति की उपायुक्त किरण भदाना ने बताया कि संसारी नाला-किलाड़-थिरोट-टांडी मार्ग पर भूस्खलन और चट्टानें गिरने के कारण वाहन मलबे में दब गया।
उन्होंने बताया कि वाहन में सवार सभी 13 लोगों, जिनमें चालक भी शामिल था, की मौके पर ही मौत हो गई।
दुर्घटना की सूचना मिलते ही पुलिस, जिला प्रशासन और सीमा सड़क संगठन (बीआरओ) की संयुक्त टीमों ने तत्काल राहत एवं बचाव अभियान शुरू किया।
बचाव दलों ने मलबा हटाकर शवों को बाहर निकालने का कार्य शुरू किया, जबकि मृतकों की पहचान सुनिश्चित करने की प्रक्रिया भी साथ-साथ जारी रही।
प्रशासन ने बताया कि पूरे घटनाक्रम पर लगातार नजर रखी जा रही है तथा राहत एवं बचाव कार्यों की उच्च स्तर पर निगरानी की जा रही है, ताकि प्रभावित क्षेत्र में आवश्यक सभी कदम समयबद्ध तरीके से उठाए जा सकें।
मुख्यमंत्री सुखविंदर सिंह सुक्खू ने घटना पर गहरा शोक व्यक्त करते हुए लाहौल-स्पीति की उपायुक्त को तत्काल दुर्घटनास्थल पर पहुंचकर राहत एवं बचाव कार्यों की व्यक्तिगत रूप से निगरानी करने के निर्देश दिए।
उन्होंने जिला प्रशासन से मृतकों के परिजनों को हरसंभव सहायता और आवश्यक सहयोग उपलब्ध कराने को भी कहा।
पांगी के उपमंडलाधिकारी (एसडीएम) अमनदीप सिंह ने बताया कि सूचना मिलते ही लाहौल-स्पीति पुलिस और स्थानीय प्रशासन की टीमें तुरंत मौके पर पहुंच गईं और कठिन भौगोलिक परिस्थितियों के बावजूद राहत अभियान शुरू कर दिया।
लोगों से सतर्क रहने की अपील करते हुए एसडीएम ने कहा कि लगातार हो रही भारी बारिश के बीच भूस्खलन संभावित मार्गों पर यात्रा करने से बचना चाहिए। उन्होंने यात्रियों से पर्वतीय क्षेत्रों की यात्रा शुरू करने से पहले मौसम विभाग और प्रशासन द्वारा जारी परामर्श का पालन करने की अपील की।
उधर, लाहौल-स्पीति की विधायक अनुराधा राणा ने बताया कि मृतकों में सात पुरुष, चार महिलाएं और छह माह का एक शिशु शामिल है, जिसकी पहचान और लिंग की औपचारिक पुष्टि अभी शेष है।
उन्होंने बताया कि एक अन्य मृतक की भी पहचान नहीं हो सकी है और उसकी शिनाख्त के लिए डीएनए परीक्षण कराया जाएगा।
