India Engages Ukraine to Safeguard 13 Seafarers Trapped on Cargo Vessel Amid Intensifying Black Sea Attacks
Fresh concerns have emerged over the safety of 13 Indian seafarers stranded aboard a merchant cargo vessel anchored at Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Chornomorsk, as repeated Russian drone and missile strikes continue to threaten the area.
With hostilities intensifying around the strategic port, Indian authorities have stepped up coordination with their Ukrainian counterparts to ensure the well-being of the crew.
The alarm gained urgency after the Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) shared a video on Wednesday showing thick plumes of smoke rising over the port in the vicinity of MV Amir1.
Responding to the developments, the Indian Embassy in Kyiv confirmed that it was closely monitoring the situation involving the Tanzania-flagged vessel and was actively working to safeguard the Indian nationals on board.
According to available information, MV Amir1, carrying a crew of 15 members—13 Indians and two Iranians—has remained anchored at Chornomorsk port since July 8, with the deteriorating security situation preventing its movement.
Issuing an official statement through social media, the Indian Embassy in Kyiv said the matter had been brought to its notice and assured that the safety of the Indian crew was receiving the highest priority.
The Embassy added that it was maintaining constant communication with all concerned authorities to ensure the protection and security of every Indian seafarer aboard the vessel.
Painting a grim picture of the conditions at sea, the Forward Seamen’s Union of India described the crew as being caught in an extremely dangerous environment.
The union said the vessel was effectively trapped in a conflict zone where repeated drone and missile attacks were occurring dangerously close to its location, leaving those on board under continuous psychological stress.
Expressing deep concern, the union appealed to the relevant authorities, the shipowners, the vessel’s flag state and the Government of India to take immediate steps to secure the crew and facilitate their early evacuation from the conflict-hit region.
FSUI General Secretary Manoj Yadav said Indian sailors should never be left exposed to the dangers of an active war zone.
He revealed that the crew had already spent nearly 20 days at the port and had reported hearing multiple explosions around the harbour, leaving them increasingly anxious about their survival.
The latest crisis comes against the backdrop of a growing toll on Indian seafarers operating in conflict-affected waters.
Recent Russian and Ukrainian attacks on merchant vessels in the Black Sea have claimed the lives of five Indian sailors, while two others remain missing. Separately, attacks on commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf since February have resulted in the deaths of around half a dozen seafarers.
Amid escalating risks to civilian shipping, India has lodged strong diplomatic protests with senior representatives of Iran, the United States, Russia and Ukraine.
New Delhi has urged all parties involved in the conflicts to refrain from targeting merchant vessels, civilian infrastructure and seafarers, emphasising that those engaged in commercial maritime operations must not become victims of armed hostilities.

यूक्रेन के ब्लैक सी तट पर स्थित चोर्नोमोर्स्क बंदरगाह में लंगर डाले एक मालवाहक जहाज पर सवार 13 भारतीय नाविकों की सुरक्षा को लेकर नई चिंता पैदा हो गई है।
हाल के दिनों में रूसी ड्रोन और मिसाइल हमलों के लगातार बढ़ते खतरे के बीच भारत ने यूक्रेनी अधिकारियों के साथ समन्वय तेज कर दिया है ताकि जहाज पर मौजूद भारतीय नागरिकों की सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित की जा सके।
स्थिति उस समय और गंभीर हो गई जब फॉरवर्ड सीमेन्स यूनियन ऑफ इंडिया (एफएसयूआई) ने बुधवार को एक वीडियो साझा किया, जिसमें एमवी अमीर1 के निकट चोर्नोमोर्स्क बंदरगाह के ऊपर धुएं के घने गुबार उठते दिखाई दिए।
इसके बाद कीव स्थित भारतीय दूतावास ने पुष्टि की कि वह तंजानिया के ध्वज वाले इस मालवाहक जहाज से जुड़े घटनाक्रम पर लगातार नजर रखे हुए है और भारतीय चालक दल की सुरक्षा के लिए सक्रिय रूप से प्रयास कर रहा है।
उपलब्ध जानकारी के अनुसार एमवी अमीर1 पर कुल 15 चालक दल के सदस्य सवार हैं, जिनमें 13 भारतीय और दो ईरानी नागरिक शामिल हैं।
यह जहाज 8 जुलाई से चोर्नोमोर्स्क बंदरगाह पर खड़ा है और क्षेत्र में लगातार बिगड़ती सुरक्षा स्थिति के कारण अब तक वहां से रवाना नहीं हो सका है।
सोशल मीडिया पर जारी अपने आधिकारिक बयान में भारतीय दूतावास ने कहा कि इस मामले को सर्वोच्च प्राथमिकता दी जा रही है।
दूतावास ने बताया कि भारतीय नाविकों की सुरक्षा और संरक्षा सुनिश्चित करने के लिए वह संबंधित सभी पक्षों के साथ लगातार संपर्क बनाए हुए है।
दूसरी ओर, फॉरवर्ड सीमेन्स यूनियन ऑफ इंडिया ने जहाज पर मौजूद चालक दल की स्थिति को बेहद भयावह बताया। यूनियन के अनुसार पोत युद्धग्रस्त क्षेत्र में फंसा हुआ है, जहां उसके आसपास लगातार ड्रोन और मिसाइल हमलों की कोशिशें हो रही हैं।
ऐसे माहौल में चालक दल के सदस्य हर पल संभावित हमले की आशंका के बीच जीवन बिता रहे हैं।
यूनियन ने जहाज के मालिकों, तंजानिया जैसे ध्वज राज्य, संबंधित अधिकारियों और भारत सरकार से तत्काल हस्तक्षेप की अपील की है।
संगठन ने मांग की है कि चालक दल की सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करते हुए उन्हें यथाशीघ्र संघर्ष क्षेत्र से सुरक्षित बाहर निकाला जाए।
एफएसयूआई के महासचिव मनोज यादव ने कहा कि भारतीय नाविकों को किसी भी युद्ध क्षेत्र में असहाय स्थिति में नहीं छोड़ा जाना चाहिए।
उन्होंने बताया कि चालक दल पिछले 20 दिनों से बंदरगाह पर फंसा हुआ है और इस दौरान आसपास कई विस्फोट होने की जानकारी दी है।
लगातार हमलों की आशंका ने सभी नाविकों की चिंता और भय को कई गुना बढ़ा दिया है।
यह घटनाक्रम ऐसे समय सामने आया है जब संघर्ष प्रभावित समुद्री क्षेत्रों में भारतीय नाविकों पर खतरा लगातार बढ़ता जा रहा है।
ब्लैक सी में हाल के रूसी और यूक्रेनी हमलों के दौरान पांच भारतीय नाविकों की मौत हो चुकी है, जबकि दो अन्य अब भी लापता बताए जा रहे हैं।
वहीं फरवरी से फारस की खाड़ी में वाणिज्यिक जहाजों पर हुए हमलों में भी लगभग आधा दर्जन नाविक अपनी जान गंवा चुके हैं।
समुद्री व्यापारिक जहाजों पर बढ़ते हमलों को लेकर भारत ने ईरान, अमेरिका, रूस और यूक्रेन के वरिष्ठ राजनयिकों के समक्ष कड़ा विरोध दर्ज कराया है।
नई दिल्ली ने सभी संबंधित पक्षों से आग्रह किया है कि सशस्त्र संघर्षों के दौरान व्यापारी जहाजों, नागरिक ढांचे और समुद्री कर्मियों को निशाना बनाने से परहेज किया जाए तथा अंतरराष्ट्रीय समुद्री सुरक्षा मानकों का पूर्ण सम्मान सुनिश्चित किया जाए।
