India Shines at Global Science Olympiads, Wins Four Golds in Chemistry and Four Medals in Biology
New Delhi: India’s remarkable run at international science competitions continued with another stellar performance, as school students secured top honours at both the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Uzbekistan and the 38th International Biology Olympiad (IBO).
The twin successes come barely a week after the country emerged among the leading performers at the International Physics Olympiad, reinforcing India’s growing stature in global academic competitions.
Delivering its finest-ever performance at the International Chemistry Olympiad, the four-member Indian contingent returned home with four gold medals, placing the country alongside China and Vietnam, while an individual participant from Russia also achieved a similar feat.
The competition was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and concluded on July 19.
The Indian team comprised Debadatta Priyadarshi from Bhubaneswar, Harshit Singhal from Mandi Gobindgarh, Kabeer Chhillar from Delhi, and Sandeep Kuchi from Hyderabad.
For both Priyadarshi and Kuchi, this marked their second appearance on the IChO winners’ podium.
At the 2025 Olympiad held in Dubai, Kuchi earned a gold medal, while Priyadarshi secured a silver medal.
A total of 363 students representing 93 countries participated in this year’s Chemistry Olympiad.
According to the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE-TIFR), Mumbai, the 2026 edition marks India’s best-ever performance since the country began participating in the prestigious competition 27 years ago.
The Chemistry team underwent intensive training under mentors Subhajit Bandyopadhyay of IISER Kolkata and Indrani Das Sen of HBCSE.
The scientific observer team included Anubendu Adhikary from IIT Kharagpur and Jayasree Gopalakrishnan from NES Ratnam College, Mumbai.
India also delivered an impressive performance at the 38th International Biology Olympiad, with all four participating students returning with medals.
Leading the Biology contingent was Bhavyaa Gunwal of Mahendragarh, who captured a gold medal, while Soumil Maity from Howrah, Nishit Kalani from Pali and Anmol Kumar from Mansa each secured silver medals.
The Olympiad featured 307 students from 78 countries, making it one of the world’s most competitive science contests for school students.
Participants faced demanding laboratory examinations lasting six hours, covering disciplines including molecular biology, biochemistry, animal physiology, animal morphology, systematics, and plant computational biology.
They were also required to complete another six-hour session of advanced theoretical and research-oriented problem-solving exercises.
The Biology team was trained by Anupama Ronad of HBCSE and Rekha Vartak, formerly associated with HBCSE. Scientific observers included Ranjitsingh Devkar of Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, and Siddhesh Ghag of UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CEBS).
The latest victories extend India’s exceptional run at international Olympiads. Only last week, the Indian contingent finished among the top-performing nations at the International Physics Olympiad held in Colombia, sharing the honours with countries including China, Kazakhstan, Russia, South Korea and Taiwan.
The success of these young achievers reflects the rigorous selection and training process conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE-TIFR) under the Department of Atomic Energy.
Students undergo months of specialised coaching, laboratory training and advanced theoretical preparation before representing India at international competitions, where they are assessed through challenging practical experiments as well as complex problem-solving tests.
With the conclusion of both the Chemistry and Biology Olympiads on July 19, India’s medal tally across the three major International Science Olympiads this month has reached another significant milestone, strengthening the country’s reputation as one of the world’s emerging centres for excellence in science education and young talent.
अंतरराष्ट्रीय विज्ञान ओलंपियाड में भारत का जलवा, रसायन विज्ञान में चार स्वर्ण और जीवविज्ञान में चार पदक जीते
नई दिल्ली। अंतरराष्ट्रीय विज्ञान प्रतियोगिताओं में भारतीय विद्यार्थियों का शानदार प्रदर्शन लगातार जारी है। उज्बेकिस्तान में आयोजित 58वें अंतरराष्ट्रीय रसायन विज्ञान ओलंपियाड (IChO) और 38वें अंतरराष्ट्रीय जीवविज्ञान ओलंपियाड (IBO) में भारतीय टीमों ने उत्कृष्ट प्रदर्शन करते हुए देश का गौरव बढ़ाया है।
यह उपलब्धि ऐसे समय आई है जब महज एक सप्ताह पहले भारत ने अंतरराष्ट्रीय भौतिकी ओलंपियाड में भी दुनिया के शीर्ष प्रदर्शन करने वाले देशों में स्थान बनाया था।
रसायन विज्ञान ओलंपियाड में भारत ने अपने 27 वर्षों के इतिहास का सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रदर्शन करते हुए सभी चार प्रतिभागियों के लिए चार स्वर्ण पदक हासिल किए। इस उपलब्धि के साथ भारत ने चीन और वियतनाम की बराबरी की, जबकि रूस के एक व्यक्तिगत प्रतिभागी ने भी स्वर्ण पदक जीता।
प्रतियोगिता ताशकंद (उज्बेकिस्तान) में आयोजित हुई और 19 जुलाई को संपन्न हुई।
भारतीय टीम में भुवनेश्वर के देबदत्त प्रियदर्शी, मंडी गोबिंदगढ़ के हर्षित सिंघल, दिल्ली के कबीर छिल्लर और हैदराबाद के संदीप कुची शामिल थे।
प्रियदर्शी और कुची दोनों के लिए यह अंतरराष्ट्रीय रसायन विज्ञान ओलंपियाड में दूसरा पदक रहा। वर्ष 2025 में दुबई में आयोजित प्रतियोगिता में संदीप कुची ने स्वर्ण और देबदत्त प्रियदर्शी ने रजत पदक जीता था।
इस वर्ष आयोजित प्रतियोगिता में 93 देशों के 363 विद्यार्थियों ने भाग लिया। होमी भाभा विज्ञान शिक्षा केंद्र (HBCSE-TIFR), मुंबई के अनुसार यह प्रदर्शन भारत की अब तक की सबसे बड़ी सफलता है।
रसायन विज्ञान टीम को आईआईएसईआर कोलकाता के सुभजीत बंद्योपाध्याय और एचबीसीएसई की इंद्राणी दास सेन ने प्रशिक्षण दिया। वैज्ञानिक पर्यवेक्षकों में आईआईटी खड़गपुर के अनुबेंदु अधिकारी तथा एनईएस रत्नम कॉलेज, मुंबई की जयश्री गोपालकृष्णन शामिल थीं।
उधर, 38वें अंतरराष्ट्रीय जीवविज्ञान ओलंपियाड में भी भारतीय टीम ने शत-प्रतिशत सफलता हासिल करते हुए सभी चार प्रतिभागियों के लिए पदक सुनिश्चित किए।
महेंद्रगढ़ की भाव्या गुनवाल ने स्वर्ण पदक जीता, जबकि हावड़ा के सौमिल मैती, पाली के निशित कलानी और मानसा के अनमोल कुमार ने रजत पदक अपने नाम किए। इस प्रतियोगिता में 78 देशों के 307 विद्यार्थियों ने हिस्सा लिया।
प्रतियोगिता के दौरान प्रतिभागियों को छह घंटे तक चलने वाली प्रयोगशाला परीक्षाओं से गुजरना पड़ा, जिनमें आणविक जीवविज्ञान, जैव रसायन, पशु शरीर क्रिया विज्ञान, पशु आकृति विज्ञान, सिस्टेमेटिक्स तथा प्लांट कम्प्यूटेशनल बायोलॉजी जैसे विषय शामिल थे।
इसके अतिरिक्त छह घंटे की शोध-आधारित सैद्धांतिक परीक्षा भी आयोजित की गई, जिसमें जटिल वैज्ञानिक समस्याओं के समाधान की क्षमता का आकलन किया गया।
जीवविज्ञान टीम को एचबीसीएसई की अनुपमा रोनाड तथा पूर्व वैज्ञानिक रेखा वर्तक ने प्रशिक्षित किया। वैज्ञानिक पर्यवेक्षकों में महाराजा सयाजीराव विश्वविद्यालय, बड़ौदा के रणजीतसिंह देवकर और यूएम-डीएई सेंटर फॉर एक्सीलेंस इन बेसिक साइंसेज (CEBS) के सिद्धेश घाग शामिल थे।
इन उपलब्धियों के साथ भारत ने अंतरराष्ट्रीय विज्ञान ओलंपियाड में अपनी शानदार लय कायम रखी है। इससे पहले कोलंबिया में आयोजित अंतरराष्ट्रीय भौतिकी ओलंपियाड में भी भारत शीर्ष प्रदर्शन करने वाले देशों में शामिल रहा था, जहां उसने चीन, कजाकिस्तान, रूस, दक्षिण कोरिया और ताइवान जैसे देशों के साथ सम्मानजनक स्थान हासिल किया।
भारतीय प्रतिभागियों की इस सफलता के पीछे होमी भाभा विज्ञान शिक्षा केंद्र (HBCSE-TIFR) की वर्षों से विकसित चयन और प्रशिक्षण प्रणाली को महत्वपूर्ण माना जाता है।
परमाणु ऊर्जा विभाग के अधीन संचालित इस संस्थान में चयनित विद्यार्थियों को कई महीनों तक कठोर सैद्धांतिक अध्ययन, प्रयोगशाला प्रशिक्षण और समस्या समाधान का विशेष अभ्यास कराया जाता है, जिसके बाद वे अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंच पर भारत का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं।
19 जुलाई को दोनों अंतरराष्ट्रीय प्रतियोगिताओं के समापन के साथ भारत ने इस महीने आयोजित तीन प्रमुख अंतरराष्ट्रीय विज्ञान ओलंपियाड में उल्लेखनीय सफलता दर्ज की है।
विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि यह उपलब्धि विज्ञान शिक्षा, अनुसंधान क्षमता और युवा प्रतिभाओं के विकास में भारत की बढ़ती वैश्विक प्रतिष्ठा का स्पष्ट प्रमाण है।
