INS Mahendragiri Commissioned: Rajnath Singh Inducts India’s Sixth Project 17A Stealth Frigate, Boosting Naval Power and Aatmanirbhar Bharat
India took another significant step towards strengthening its maritime defence capabilities on Saturday with the commissioning of INS Mahendragiri, the sixth stealth frigate under the prestigious Project 17A programme.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh formally inducted the advanced warship into the Indian Navy during a ceremonial event at the Visakhapatnam Naval Dockyard, where he was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour before the commissioning proceedings.
Bearing the name of the Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats, the newly commissioned warship represents courage, endurance, and determination.
It is the first vessel in the Indian Navy to carry this name, making it a unique addition to the country’s expanding naval fleet. Naval officials believe the frigate will create its own legacy while reinforcing India’s rich maritime traditions.
The sophisticated warship has been designed entirely by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.
As the sixth vessel of the Nilgiri-class Project 17A stealth frigates, INS Mahendragiri showcases India’s rapidly advancing expertise in indigenous warship design, engineering, and shipbuilding.
With more than 75 per cent indigenous content, the frigate reflects the growing success of the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The project has brought together a wide network of Indian defence manufacturers, including numerous Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), thereby strengthening the country’s defence production ecosystem, encouraging technological innovation and generating substantial employment opportunities.
INS Mahendragiri has been equipped with an advanced combination of modern indigenous weapons, sophisticated sensors,s and electronic warfare systems capable of responding to a wide range of operational challenges.
The stealth frigate is designed to conduct anti-aircraft, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare while also supporting maritime surveillance, coastal security, search and rescue operations, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief missions and extended deployments across the Indian Ocean Region and beyond.
The induction of the warship marks another important achievement in the successful implementation of the Project 17A programme, which is steadily modernising the Indian Navy’s frontline fleet.
Defence experts believe each new vessel under the programme significantly enhances India’s operational preparedness and strengthens its position among the world’s leading indigenous warship-building nations.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Visakhapatnam on Friday evening ahead of the commissioning ceremony, where he was received by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and senior naval officials.
Describing the occasion as a milestone for both the country and the Navy, Singh said the induction of INS Mahendragiri reflects India’s growing confidence in designing and building complex defence platforms within the country.
In a message shared before the ceremony, the Defence Minister said the advanced stealth frigate stands as a powerful symbol of India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
He credited the achievement to the capabilities of India’s domestic defence industries, shipbuilders and MSMEs, adding that the vessel demonstrates the country’s technological progress under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the new warship, Singh said INS Mahendragiri is fully prepared to safeguard India’s maritime interests and contribute towards maintaining peace, stability and security across the Indo-Pacific region.
He expressed confidence that the induction of the frigate would further strengthen the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy in the years ahead.

भारत ने अपनी समुद्री सुरक्षा क्षमता को और मजबूत करने की दिशा में शनिवार को एक और महत्वपूर्ण उपलब्धि हासिल की। रक्षा मंत्री राजनाथ सिंह ने विशाखापत्तनम नौसैनिक अड्डे पर आयोजित भव्य समारोह में अत्याधुनिक स्वदेशी स्टील्थ फ्रिगेट आईएनएस महेंद्रगिरि को भारतीय नौसेना में औपचारिक रूप से शामिल किया।
कमीशनिंग समारोह से पहले रक्षा मंत्री को नौसेना की ओर से पारंपरिक गार्ड ऑफ ऑनर भी प्रदान किया गया।
पूर्वी घाट की महेंद्रगिरि पर्वतमाला के नाम पर रखे गए इस युद्धपोत को साहस, दृढ़ता और अटूट संकल्प का प्रतीक माना जा रहा है।
भारतीय नौसेना के इतिहास में पहली बार किसी युद्धपोत को यह नाम दिया गया है, जिससे यह जहाज अपने आप में विशिष्ट बन गया है। नौसेना का मानना है कि यह फ्रिगेट आने वाले वर्षों में देश की समुद्री विरासत में एक नया अध्याय जोड़ेगा।
आईएनएस महेंद्रगिरि का डिजाइन भारतीय नौसेना के वारशिप डिजाइन ब्यूरो (WDB) ने तैयार किया है, जबकि इसका निर्माण मुंबई स्थित मझगांव डॉक शिपबिल्डर्स लिमिटेड (MDL) ने किया है।
यह प्रतिष्ठित प्रोजेक्ट-17ए नीलगिरि श्रेणी का छठा स्टील्थ फ्रिगेट है और भारत की स्वदेशी युद्धपोत निर्माण क्षमता में आई उल्लेखनीय प्रगति का प्रतीक माना जा रहा है।
युद्धपोत में 75 प्रतिशत से अधिक स्वदेशी सामग्री का उपयोग किया गया है, जो केंद्र सरकार की आत्मनिर्भर भारत पहल की सफलता को दर्शाता है।
इसके निर्माण में देशभर के अनेक सार्वजनिक और निजी रक्षा उद्योगों के साथ बड़ी संख्या में सूक्ष्म, लघु एवं मध्यम उद्यमों (MSMEs) ने भी महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई है। इससे न केवल भारत का रक्षा विनिर्माण ढांचा मजबूत हुआ है, बल्कि रोजगार सृजन और स्वदेशी तकनीकी विकास को भी नई गति मिली है।
आईएनएस महेंद्रगिरि को अत्याधुनिक स्वदेशी हथियार प्रणालियों, उन्नत सेंसरों और आधुनिक इलेक्ट्रॉनिक युद्ध प्रणाली से लैस किया गया है। यह युद्धपोत हवाई, सतही और पनडुब्बी रोधी अभियानों को प्रभावी ढंग से अंजाम देने में सक्षम है।
इसके अलावा समुद्री निगरानी, तटीय सुरक्षा, खोज एवं बचाव अभियान, मानवीय सहायता एवं आपदा राहत (HADR) मिशनों तथा हिंद महासागर क्षेत्र सहित दूरस्थ समुद्री क्षेत्रों में लंबे समय तक संचालन की क्षमता भी इसमें मौजूद है।
इस युद्धपोत का नौसेना में शामिल होना प्रोजेक्ट-17ए कार्यक्रम की एक और बड़ी सफलता माना जा रहा है।
रक्षा विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि इस श्रेणी के प्रत्येक नए युद्धपोत के शामिल होने से भारतीय नौसेना की युद्धक क्षमता में उल्लेखनीय वृद्धि होगी और स्वदेशी युद्धपोत निर्माण के क्षेत्र में भारत की वैश्विक पहचान और मजबूत होगी।
रक्षा मंत्री राजनाथ सिंह शुक्रवार शाम विशाखापत्तनम पहुंचे थे, जहां उनका स्वागत नौसेना प्रमुख एडमिरल कृष्णा स्वामीनाथन और वरिष्ठ नौसैनिक अधिकारियों ने किया।
उन्होंने इस अवसर को भारतीय नौसेना और पूरे देश के लिए गौरवपूर्ण क्षण बताते हुए कहा कि आईएनएस महेंद्रगिरि का कमीशन होना भारत की स्वदेशी रक्षा निर्माण क्षमता में बढ़ते आत्मविश्वास का प्रमाण है।
समारोह से पहले जारी अपने संदेश में रक्षा मंत्री ने कहा कि यह अत्याधुनिक स्टील्थ फ्रिगेट आत्मनिर्भर भारत अभियान की सफलता का जीवंत उदाहरण है।
उन्होंने कहा कि घरेलू रक्षा उद्योगों, शिपबिल्डर्स और एमएसएमई की तकनीकी क्षमता ने इस उपलब्धि को संभव बनाया है और भारत अब जटिल रक्षा प्रणालियों के निर्माण में तेजी से आत्मनिर्भर बन रहा है।
राजनाथ सिंह ने विश्वास व्यक्त किया कि आईएनएस महेंद्रगिरि भारतीय नौसेना की परिचालन क्षमता को नई ऊंचाइयों तक ले जाएगी।
उन्होंने कहा कि यह युद्धपोत भारत के समुद्री हितों की प्रभावी सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करने के साथ-साथ पूरे हिंद-प्रशांत क्षेत्र में शांति, स्थिरता और सुरक्षित समुद्री व्यवस्था बनाए रखने में भी महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाएगा।
