A reported fish meal at a Nishad community gathering in Ayodhya during Sawan has triggered a political exchange, with former BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla accusing Congress of applying selective standards to religious customs.
A food-related event in Ayodhya has become the latest flashpoint in the political battle between Shehzad Poonawalla and the Congress.
The former BJP leader on Monday questioned Congress over a purported video linked to a Nishad community programme in the temple city, where fish was reportedly being prepared and served during the month of Sawan.
Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai was reported to have attended the gathering.
Poonawalla’s criticism was directed less at individual dietary choices and more at what he described as the public and political symbolism of the occasion.
In a series of social media posts, he said Ayodhya’s special place in Hindu religious life and the observance of Sawan made the reported public serving of fish a matter that deserved scrutiny.
At the same time, Poonawalla said he had no objection to what individuals chose to eat privately.
He argued, however, that political parties themselves had turned food preferences into an issue of public debate and electoral politics.
Drawing Congress into a broader argument, he referred to previous controversies involving food and religion.
He cited Rahul Gandhi’s 2023 cooking appearance with Tejashwi Yadav in Champaran, where the Congress leader was seen preparing mutton.
Poonawalla also referred to the political debate in West Bengal, where the issue of eating fish had featured in exchanges involving the BJP and its opponents.
His central argument was that political parties should follow the same standard when dealing with the religious sentiments of different communities.
To underline his point, Poonawalla posed a hypothetical question: whether those defending the reported Ayodhya event would participate in a public gathering centred on pork during a sacred period observed by another religion.
On X, he directly addressed Rahul Gandhi and sought a response.
The latest remarks represent a continuation of Poonawalla’s attacks on the Congress despite his recent departure from the BJP.
The controversy has emerged from a purported video connected to the Nishad community event, and Poonawalla has used the episode to revive his wider allegation that the Congress approaches Hindu religious practices differently from the sensitivities associated with other faiths.
His comments have also placed the spotlight once again on the intersection of food, faith and political messaging in India.
What began as a reported community meal has now been turned into a larger political argument over whether public figures should take greater account of religious observances when attending events, particularly in places carrying strong spiritual significance.

लेकिन उन्होंने यह तर्क दिया कि जब भोजन किसी सार्वजनिक और राजनीतिक कार्यक्रम का हिस्सा बन जाता है, तो उससे जुड़ी परिस्थितियों और स्थान की धार्मिक संवेदनशीलता पर चर्चा होना स्वाभाविक है।
उन्होंने खास तौर पर इस बात को मुद्दा बनाया कि कार्यक्रम अयोध्या में आयोजित हुआ और समय सावन का था।
पूनावाला का कहना था कि अयोध्या हिंदू आस्था के प्रमुख केंद्रों में शामिल है और सावन को भी धार्मिक रूप से विशेष माना जाता है।
इसी आधार पर उन्होंने कांग्रेस से सवाल किया कि पार्टी इस मामले में अपनी स्थिति स्पष्ट करे।
पूर्व बीजेपी नेता ने इस विवाद को केवल अयोध्या तक सीमित नहीं रखा।
उन्होंने राहुल गांधी और तेजस्वी यादव के 2023 के उस कार्यक्रम का भी उल्लेख किया जिसमें दोनों चंपारण में मटन तैयार करते नजर आए थे।
पूनावाला ने पश्चिम बंगाल में मछली खाने को लेकर हुई राजनीतिक बहस का भी जिक्र किया और कहा कि जब भोजन की पसंद को लेकर राजनीतिक दल सार्वजनिक रूप से एक पक्ष लेते हैं, तो उन्हें अलग-अलग परिस्थितियों में एक समान दृष्टिकोण अपनाना चाहिए।
उन्होंने राहुल गांधी के सामने एक काल्पनिक सवाल भी रखा।
पूनावाला ने पूछा कि यदि किसी धार्मिक रूप से महत्वपूर्ण अवधि के दौरान किसी अन्य समुदाय की आस्था से जुड़ी संवेदनशीलता को लेकर ऐसा सार्वजनिक भोज आयोजित किया जाए, तो क्या कांग्रेस के नेता उसी प्रकार उसमें शामिल होंगे।
X पर एक पोस्ट के माध्यम से उन्होंने राहुल गांधी से इस मुद्दे पर सीधे जवाब मांगा।
पूनावाला के ताजा हमले का मुख्य राजनीतिक संदेश यह है कि उनके अनुसार कांग्रेस धार्मिक परंपराओं से जुड़े मामलों में समान दृष्टिकोण नहीं अपनाती।
उन्होंने पार्टी पर वोट बैंक की राजनीति के कारण हिंदू आस्था से जुड़े मुद्दों के प्रति अलग रवैया रखने का आरोप लगाया।
अयोध्या के कार्यक्रम को लेकर उनकी टिप्पणियों के बाद भोजन, व्यक्तिगत स्वतंत्रता और धार्मिक संवेदनशीलता का मुद्दा फिर राजनीतिक चर्चा के केंद्र में आ गया है।
