Jammu Police Uncover Drone-Based Cross-Border Smuggling Network, Four Held

Investigation into Arnia arrests leads to Punjab suspect; Beretta pistol, ammunition and more than 1 kg of suspected narcotics recovered.

JAMMU: A routine police interception in Jammu’s Arnia border belt has opened up an investigation into an alleged cross-border smuggling network in which drones were used to move narcotics and weapons from Pakistan, officials said.

The case began on October 3 when police stopped two men travelling on a motorcycle near Tamala Bridge in Arnia. The search reportedly yielded a Beretta-type pistol, ammunition and suspected heroin.

The two men were identified as Rahul Kumar of Trewa and Ajay Kumar alias Rabb of Talhar.

Rather than ending with those arrests, the investigation widened during questioning. Police subsequently arrested another Ajay Kumar, known as Sam, and later traced Jaganpreet Randhawa alias Jaggi to Punjab. Investigators suspect Randhawa was a link connecting the local operatives with the wider supply chain.

The seizures made during the investigation included a silver-coloured Beretta-type pistol, two magazines and four live rounds. Police also reported recovering 264 grams of a heroin-like substance from Rahul and 276 grams of suspected heroin from Rabb. Further searches allegedly led to the recovery of 464 grams of opium resin and 13.3 grams of heroin from Sam.

Police have registered a case under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and the Arms Act. Investigators are now trying to determine who arranged the consignments, where the material was intended to go and how extensive the network may be.

Two Drone Deliveries Under Investigation

Investigators believe the material did not enter the area through conventional smuggling routes. According to police, questioning of the suspects indicated that they had previously received two consignments delivered by drones operated from across the border.

The alleged use of drones adds another dimension to the case because such deliveries allow handlers to move small consignments across the international border without requiring couriers to physically cross it.

Police are also examining alleged connections between the arrested men and Pakistan-based handlers. The investigation has reportedly focused on a wider network rather than treating the four arrests as an isolated drug case.

Punjab Connection Emerges

The probe moved beyond Jammu and Kashmir when investigators identified Jaganpreet Randhawa alias Jaggi as a suspected forward link. His arrest in Punjab indicates that the alleged network may have operated across state boundaries rather than being confined to the border area.

The authorities have not yet disclosed the complete destination of the recovered consignments or the identities of all suspected members of the network. Further questioning and searches are expected to determine whether additional people were involved.

The latest arrests come amid intensified efforts by security agencies to disrupt drug trafficking in Jammu and Kashmir. The use of drones for cross-border delivery remains a particular security concern because narcotics and weapons can be moved without exposing traditional couriers to border surveillance.

The investigation into the Arnia case is continuing, with police seeking to establish the source of the contraband, identify other links in the alleged supply chain, and determine whether the weapons and narcotics were destined for onward distribution.
