J&K Assembly Passes Resolution Condemning Pahalgam Terror Attack, Calls for Unity and Communal Harmony
Srinagar: In a special session convened in the aftermath of the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam, members of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly came together across party lines to unanimously adopt a powerful resolution condemning the violence and calling for national unity.
The three-page resolution, introduced by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, expressed strong condemnation of the attack and reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to preserving communal harmony, national integrity, and the ethos of Kashmiriyat.
“Such acts of terror are a direct assault on the values enshrined in our Constitution and the centuries-old spirit of unity, peace, and tolerance that define both Jammu and Kashmir and the Indian nation,” the resolution read.
The House warned citizens, including media entities, to remain vigilant against attempts to inflame communal tensions or propagate divisive narratives in the wake of the attack.
“Society must resist falling prey to those who seek to exploit tragedy for polarization,” the resolution stated.
Highlighting the rare unity witnessed across the Union Territory, the resolution noted that the incident had brought together people from all corners—from Kathua in Jammu to Kupwara in Kashmir—in a shared sense of grief and solidarity. Legislators expressed deep condolences to the victims and their families.
A special tribute was paid to Shaheed Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a courageous individual who lost his life while trying to protect tourists during the attack.
“His selfless bravery stands as a timeless symbol of the spirit of Kashmir. His sacrifice will forever inspire generations to come,” the House declared.
The resolution also praised the spontaneous and peaceful demonstrations held in towns and villages across the region, as well as the public’s outpouring of support for the victims. These actions, it said, underscored the people’s unwavering dedication to peace, secularism, and the rule of law.
In addition, the Assembly voiced its support for the diplomatic and strategic measures announced by the Union Government following the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security.
It cautioned against the deliberate and selective targeting of victims, describing it as part of a larger “sinister design” aimed at destabilizing society.
Importantly, the resolution called upon all other states in the country to ensure the protection, dignity, and welfare of Kashmiri citizens, particularly students and travellers, residing outside Jammu and Kashmir.
“The need to stand united against those attempting to create divisions cannot be overstated,” the resolution emphasized.
During the session, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah read aloud the names of the 26 victims who lost their lives in the tragic attack.
He affirmed that this solemn occasion was not the right moment to press for political demands, such as the restoration of J&K’s statehood, choosing instead to focus on mourning the victims and reinforcing the message of unity.
