Junior Doctors End Strike at Prayagraj Medical College After Dr. Mohsin’s Release and High Court Intervention

Prayagraj: Junior doctors at Motilal Nehru Medical College called off their strike on Thursday afternoon after police released Dr Mohsin Ali and the Allahabad High Court ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Following these developments, the protesting doctors returned to work at around 2:45 pm, leading to the restoration of healthcare services across the institution.

The agitation had entered its third day, with junior doctors continuing their protest throughout the morning.

Although the strike remained peaceful, participants raised slogans against the police administration and demanded justice.

Due to the ongoing protest, the Emergency Medicine Department had stopped admitting new patients to hospital wards, and trauma care teams had also declined to accept fresh cases.

The situation changed shortly after 2:30 pm when information regarding the High Court’s decision to order a judicial investigation reached the protesting doctors.

The medical community welcomed the court’s directive, and news of Dr. Mohsin Ali’s release further boosted morale among the junior doctors.

In response, they decided to withdraw the strike and resume their professional duties.

With the protest ending, senior doctors once again began attending to patients at SRN Hospital, and normal medical services gradually resumed.

Hospital authorities and patients alike expressed relief as healthcare operations returned to normal after several days of disruption.

Dr. Ekta Singh, President of the Junior Doctors’ Association at Motilal Nehru Medical College, said the association welcomed the High Court’s decision to order a judicial probe.

She stated that the strike was withdrawn immediately after the court’s order and all healthcare facilities were restored without delay.

Echoing a similar view, Dr. Nivedita, Vice-President of the Resident Doctors’ Association, said the court’s intervention had reinforced confidence in the justice system.

She noted that Dr. Mohsin Ali had also been released, and therefore the doctors decided to end their protest and return to patient care.

However, she added that concerns remain regarding the manner in which the police handled the matter and the decision to take Dr. Mohsin into custody in the first place.

The conclusion of the strike has brought much-needed relief to patients and their families, while also marking a significant turning point in the ongoing dispute between the medical fraternity and law enforcement authorities in Prayagraj.

On the other hand, looking at the seriousness of the situation and the inconvenience being caused to patients coming from distant places, senior doctors took up the responsibility to look into the problems of the patients, and they attended to 1623 patients on Thursday before the junior doctors returned on duty following the High Court’s intervention.

Meanwhile, several senior citizens have appealed to Junior doctors to behave with love, patience, and care with the patients who come to seek remedy. No patients would ever go to a hospital to have fist fights, heated arguments, and scuffles.

The medical college authorities should frame strict rules and permanently expel doctors who assault patients and their attendants.

A senior journalist says he has himself been a witness to doctors thrashing patients and attendants on several occasions during his forty-year career in journalism in this city of Prayagraj.

This is shameful, he said.

Doctors are there to mitigate suffering, not to increase it, he said. Tell me a country where doctors abuse, thrash and misbehave with patients who need treatment, not ill treatment, he added.
