Kanwar Yatra 2026 Begins: Massive Security Cover, Traffic Curbs Across Delhi-UP as Over 4 Crore Devotees Head to Haridwar
Thousands of saffron-clad pilgrims began their annual Kanwar Yatra with the onset of the holy month of Shravan on Thursday, prompting authorities in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh to roll out an extensive security and traffic management plan.
Haridwar is expected to receive more than four crore devotees during the pilgrimage season, making it one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the country.
Tight restrictions on vehicular movement have been enforced on several key routes to ensure the uninterrupted passage of Kanwariyas.
During the sacred journey, devotees of Lord Shiva travel on foot or by other means from different parts of the country to Haridwar and nearby pilgrimage centres to collect holy Ganga water.
The water is then carried back to their hometowns and villages, where it is ceremonially offered to Shiva lingams through the traditional ritual of jalabhishek during the Shravan observances.
Keeping the expected surge in pilgrim movement in mind, Delhi Police has intensified security arrangements across the capital and stationed additional personnel at strategic points.
According to a traffic advisory issued on Thursday, commuters are likely to face congestion and diversions on several stretches in the western part of Delhi because of the movement of Kanwariyas and the establishment of temporary Kanwar camps.
Roads expected to witness significant disruption include Najafgarh Firni Road, Rohtak Road, Pankha Road, Dev Prakash Shastri Marg, Nangloi-Najafgarh Road and portions of the Outer Ring Road.
Authorities in western Uttar Pradesh have also introduced a phased diversion plan covering multiple districts to facilitate the pilgrimage.
Medical aid centres, CCTV surveillance systems and dedicated emergency response teams have been deployed along important routes and river ghats.
Officials have also ensured the removal of liquor outlets and non-vegetarian food establishments along the Kanwar route, in keeping with the religious sentiments associated with the yatra.
The elaborate traffic arrangements are expected to affect road connectivity between Delhi, Haridwar, Dehradun and Saharanpur. Travellers have been advised to anticipate longer journey durations because of diversions.
At the same time, transport operators are also expected to witness increased demand, resulting in higher bus and taxi fares during the pilgrimage period.
In Ghaziabad, the police commissionerate has enforced a staggered diversion schedule from July 29 to August 12.
Heavy commercial vehicles entering from the Delhi side have already been prohibited since Wednesday morning.
Such vehicles are now being redirected through alternative corridors, including the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, Ganga Expressway and the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, to minimise congestion on routes earmarked for Kanwariyas.
Bareilly district has significantly strengthened its security framework for the annual pilgrimage.
More than 3,900 police personnel have been deployed, while the district has been divided into three super zones, nine zones, 28 sectors and 104 sub-sectors to enable close monitoring and rapid response throughout the yatra.
Security deployment has been further intensified across the Meerut zone, where nearly 25,000 police personnel have been assigned to pilgrimage duties.
Around 7,000 AI-enabled CCTV cameras, temporary police assistance centres, barricades and integrated command-and-control facilities have been installed to maintain constant surveillance and ensure smooth movement of devotees.
Muzaffarnagar Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar said restrictions on heavy vehicles would come into effect on important routes from July 30.
Beginning August 4, complete traffic restrictions will be enforced on the Delhi-Haridwar National Highway and the Ganga Canal Road passing through the district to provide an exclusive corridor for Kanwariyas.
As part of the revised traffic blueprint, vehicles travelling from Haridwar and Saharanpur towards Delhi will be diverted through Deoband, Pachenda, Mirapur and Mawana before entering the national capital via Meerut.
The same alignment will be followed by traffic returning from Delhi. Travellers heading from Delhi to Haridwar and Dehradun have been advised to use the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor, where Kanwariyas will be discouraged from moving.
Additional Director General of Police (Meerut Zone) Bhanu Bhaskar said ambulances and other emergency service vehicles would continue to receive passage through restricted stretches under police escort.

श्रावण मास के शुभारंभ के साथ गुरुवार से वार्षिक कांवड़ यात्रा शुरू होते ही दिल्ली और उत्तर प्रदेश में सुरक्षा व्यवस्था अभूतपूर्व स्तर पर पहुंच गई।
हरिद्वार में इस बार चार करोड़ से अधिक शिवभक्तों के पहुंचने का अनुमान है।
श्रद्धालुओं की निर्बाध आवाजाही सुनिश्चित करने के लिए प्रमुख मार्गों पर यातायात प्रतिबंध लागू कर दिए गए हैं और पुलिस-प्रशासन पूरी तरह सतर्क है।
भगवान शिव के भक्त देश के विभिन्न राज्यों से हरिद्वार और आसपास के तीर्थ स्थलों तक पहुंचकर गंगा जल एकत्र करते हैं।
इसके बाद वे कांवड़ में जल लेकर अपने नगरों और गांवों के शिव मंदिरों तक पैदल या अन्य माध्यमों से लौटते हैं, जहां श्रावण मास में भगवान शिव का पारंपरिक जलाभिषेक किया जाता है।
यही यात्रा हर वर्ष करोड़ों श्रद्धालुओं की आस्था का केंद्र बनती है।
राजधानी दिल्ली में संभावित भीड़ को देखते हुए पुलिस ने संवेदनशील स्थानों पर अतिरिक्त बल तैनात कर दिया है।
गुरुवार को जारी ट्रैफिक एडवाइजरी के अनुसार पश्चिमी दिल्ली के कई मार्गों पर कांवड़ियों की आवाजाही और अस्थायी कांवड़ शिविरों की स्थापना के कारण यातायात प्रभावित रहेगा।
नजफगढ़ फिरनी रोड, रोहतक रोड, पंखा रोड, देव प्रकाश शास्त्री मार्ग, नांगलोई-नजफगढ़ रोड तथा आउटर रिंग रोड के कई हिस्सों पर विशेष यातायात व्यवस्था लागू रहेगी।
पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश के विभिन्न जिलों में भी चरणबद्ध डायवर्जन योजना लागू कर दी गई है। यात्रा मार्गों और प्रमुख घाटों पर चिकित्सा सुविधाएं, सीसीटीवी निगरानी तथा आपातकालीन राहत दल तैनात किए गए हैं।
प्रशासन ने धार्मिक परंपराओं को ध्यान में रखते हुए कांवड़ मार्ग से शराब की दुकानों और मांसाहारी भोजनालयों को भी हटवा दिया है।
इन व्यवस्थाओं का असर दिल्ली, हरिद्वार, देहरादून और सहारनपुर के बीच सड़क यातायात पर पड़ने की संभावना है।
मार्ग परिवर्तन के कारण यात्रियों को सामान्य से अधिक समय लग सकता है, जबकि बसों और टैक्सियों के किराए में भी बढ़ोतरी होने की आशंका जताई जा रही है।
गाजियाबाद पुलिस कमिश्नरेट ने 29 जुलाई से 12 अगस्त तक चरणबद्ध ट्रैफिक डायवर्जन लागू किया है। दिल्ली की ओर से आने वाले भारी मालवाहक वाहनों का प्रवेश बुधवार सुबह से प्रतिबंधित कर दिया गया है।
ऐसे वाहनों को अब ईस्टर्न पेरिफेरल एक्सप्रेसवे, गंगा एक्सप्रेसवे और दिल्ली-देहरादून एक्सप्रेसवे के रास्ते भेजा जा रहा है ताकि कांवड़ मार्गों पर दबाव कम रहे।
बरेली जिले में यात्रा को सुरक्षित और व्यवस्थित बनाने के लिए व्यापक सुरक्षा इंतजाम किए गए हैं। यहां 3,900 से अधिक पुलिसकर्मियों की तैनाती की गई है।
पूरे जिले को तीन सुपर जोन, नौ जोन, 28 सेक्टर और 104 उप-सेक्टरों में विभाजित कर निगरानी और कानून-व्यवस्था की जिम्मेदारी तय की गई है।
मेरठ जोन में सुरक्षा व्यवस्था और अधिक सुदृढ़ की गई है, जहां लगभग 25,000 पुलिसकर्मी कांवड़ ड्यूटी में लगाए गए हैं।
करीब 7,000 एआई आधारित सीसीटीवी कैमरे, अस्थायी पुलिस सहायता केंद्र, बैरिकेडिंग तथा एकीकृत कमांड एवं कंट्रोल सेंटर स्थापित किए गए हैं ताकि यात्रा के दौरान हर गतिविधि पर नजर रखी जा सके।
मुजफ्फरनगर के वरिष्ठ पुलिस अधीक्षक संजय कुमार ने बताया कि 30 जुलाई से प्रमुख मार्गों पर भारी वाहनों की आवाजाही पर रोक लागू कर दी जाएगी।
वहीं 4 अगस्त से जिले में दिल्ली-हरिद्वार राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग तथा गंगा नहर मार्ग पर सभी प्रकार के सामान्य वाहनों का संचालन पूरी तरह प्रतिबंधित रहेगा ताकि कांवड़ियों की निर्बाध आवाजाही सुनिश्चित की जा सके।
नई ट्रैफिक योजना के तहत हरिद्वार और सहारनपुर से दिल्ली आने वाले वाहनों को देवबंद, पचेंडा, मीरापुर और मेरठ के मवाना मार्ग से होकर राष्ट्रीय राजधानी की ओर भेजा जाएगा। दिल्ली से लौटने वाले वाहन भी इसी वैकल्पिक मार्ग का उपयोग करेंगे।
दिल्ली से हरिद्वार और देहरादून जाने वाले यात्रियों को दिल्ली-देहरादून इकोनॉमिक कॉरिडोर अपनाने की सलाह दी गई है, जहां कांवड़ियों की आवाजाही को हतोत्साहित किया जाएगा।
मेरठ जोन के अपर पुलिस महानिदेशक भानु भास्कर ने कहा कि एम्बुलेंस और अन्य आपातकालीन सेवाओं के वाहनों को पुलिस सुरक्षा के साथ प्रतिबंधित मार्गों से गुजरने की अनुमति दी जाएगी।
