‘Karma’ Completes 40 Years: Anupam Kher Recalls the Blockbuster That Made Him a Commercial Star

As Subhash Ghai’s action-packed drama ‘Karma’ completed four decades since its theatrical release, versatile actor Anupam Kher took to his social media platforms to pen an emotional memoir, reminiscing about the film that transformed his career trajectory.
The 71-year-old actor, who had already earned critical acclaim with ‘Saaransh’ in 1984, described ‘Karma’ as the project that catapulted him into the commercial mainstream of Hindi cinema.
In a heartfelt post that quickly went viral, the legendary Anupam Kher wrote, “40 YEARS OF KARMA! 40 years ago, KARMA happened! And what a blockbuster it was!”
He credited the film’s director, Subhash Ghai, with changing the course of his professional life. “While ‘Saaransh’ had established me as an actor, Subhash Ghai Sahab’s ‘Karma’ made me a commercial star.
Suddenly, I was part of that larger-than-life world of mainstream Hindi cinema. And I was loving every moment of it,” Anupam Kher recalled.
The 1986 film, which featured an ensemble cast including Dilip Kumar, Nutan, Sridevi, and Jackie Shroff, became one of the biggest box-office successes of the decade.
Anupam Kher portrayed the iconic villain Dr. Dang, a character that remains etched in the memory of cinema enthusiasts even today.
His performance as the menacing antagonist, complete with his signature dialogue, “इस थप्पड़ की गूँज सुनी तुमने, डॉ. डैंग?” (Did you hear the echo of this slap, Dr. Dang?), became a cultural phenomenon.
However, Anupam Kher emphasized that the most profound gift ‘Karma’ bestowed upon him was the privilege of working alongside the legendary Dilip Kumar.
“To share the screen with him, to watch him perform from such close quarters, to learn from his silences, his pauses, his presence — that was my real award,” he wrote.
The actor expressed deep gratitude towards Subhash Ghai for trusting him with the role of Dr. Dang, acknowledging that the opportunity proved to be a turning point in his career.
“Some films give you success. Some give you memories. ‘Karma’ gave me both… for a lifetime!” Anupam Kher concluded his post, offering heartfelt congratulations to the entire team of the film on completing forty glorious years.
The actor ended with a resounding “Jai Ho!” as he celebrated the milestone that remains close to his heart.
‘Karma,’ produced by Mukta Arts, was known for its patriotic theme, memorable soundtrack, and larger-than-life storytelling.
