Lucknow Lawyer Murder Case: Three Convicted Get Life Sentence After 24 Years, IPS Officer Laxmi Singh Witnesses Verdict
It took nearly two decades for the family of senior advocate and former Lucknow Bar Association president Indradev Singh to get justice. Singh had been shot dead by assailants while he was riding his motorcycle.
Lawyers staged demonstrations, blocked roads, and demanded a thorough investigation into the killing.
A Special CBI Court in Lucknow on Tuesday sentenced Vikram Yadav alias Kalia, Panna Singh and Brijesh Yadav to life imprisonment, bringing one of Uttar Pradesh’s most closely followed criminal trials to a decisive conclusion.
The verdict carried deep emotional significance for the victim’s family. Indradev Singh’s widow, Nayantara Singh and daughter Laxmi Singh, who currently serves as the Police Commissioner of Gautam Buddh Nagar, were present inside the courtroom when Special CBI Judge Vayu Nandan Mishra pronounced the punishment.
The judgment marked the end of a legal battle that had stretched for nearly 24 years.
As the proceedings concluded, mother and daughter quietly walked out of the courtroom without speaking to the media.
The murder of Indradev Singh in August 2002 had shaken Lucknow’s legal fraternity and sparked widespread outrage across the city.
At that time, Laxmi Singh was 28 years old and had only recently begun her career in the Indian Police Service.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of August 8, 2002, when 57-year-old Indradev Singh had planned to visit Aminabad with his family for festival shopping.
After meeting his wife Nayantara and son Digvijay Singh near the Lucknow district court, he rode ahead on his motorcycle while the two followed on another two-wheeler.
Only a few hundred metres from the district court, near the Kaiserbagh Telephone Exchange, two motorcycle-borne attackers intercepted Singh’s vehicle.
According to investigators, before he could react, one of the assailants fired at him from close range. The bullet struck his neck, causing him to lose control of the motorcycle and collapse onto the road.
Witnessing the attack, Nayantara and their son rushed to the spot with the help of passers-by and immediately shifted him to a nearby hospital.
Despite their efforts, doctors declared the senior advocate dead shortly after his arrival, leaving the family devastated and triggering demands for swift justice.
On June 30, 2026, the Special CBI Court had already held the three accused guilty of murder and criminal conspiracy.
Vikram Yadav, who was serving jail time in another criminal case, remained in custody. At the same time, Panna Singh and Brijesh Yadav, who had been out on bail, were arrested immediately after the conviction pending sentencing.
The court awarded all three convicts life imprisonment and also imposed a collective fine of ₹1.5 lakh.
According to CBI prosecutor K.P. Singh, the judge directed that 80 per cent of the recovered fine be paid to the complainant’s family as compensation. The order marked the conclusion of one of Uttar Pradesh’s longest-running criminal trials.
Soon after the sentencing, defence lawyer Ashish Tripathi announced that the convicted men would challenge the judgment before a higher court. He said the legal team would file an appeal against both the conviction and the sentence in accordance with the law.
The criminal case began immediately after the murder, when Nayantara Singh lodged an FIR at Kaiserbagh Police Station.
In her complaint, she alleged that her husband’s killing was linked to a prolonged business dispute with his former associate, Manna Lal Gupta.
Initially, the investigation was conducted by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Lucknow Police.
However, widespread protests by lawyers and growing public pressure led the Uttar Pradesh government to hand over the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) later in 2002.
During its investigation, the CBI concluded that the murder had its roots in a bitter conflict over a valuable piece of land situated on Sitapur Road in Lucknow.
According to the agency, the dispute gradually intensified before ultimately turning into a criminal conspiracy.
The prosecution told the court that Indradev Singh had purchased the property and entrusted its development to his associate Manna Lal Gupta, who was both a former lekhpal and a practising advocate.
The plan was to develop the land into residential plots and sell them to buyers.
According to the prosecution, the relationship between the two deteriorated after Singh allegedly discovered serious financial irregularities.
Manna Lal was accused of failing to maintain proper accounts of booking amounts and advance payments received from prospective purchasers.
As mistrust grew, Singh allegedly accused him of cheating in multiple property transactions.
The CBI maintained that Manna Lal eventually hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Singh. Investigators alleged that he arranged for hired shooters to execute the murder to settle the ongoing dispute permanently.
The agency claimed that Vikram Yadav alias Kalia, a history-sheeter, fired the fatal shot while riding pillion on a motorcycle driven by Brijesh Yadav.
Investigators further alleged that Panna Singh actively participated in the conspiracy that culminated in the murder.
The CBI submitted its chargesheet on August 7, 2003, naming six accused under charges of murder and criminal conspiracy.
During the lengthy trial, the prosecution examined 50 witnesses, while the defence chose not to produce any witness in support of its case.
With the sentencing now complete, the nearly 24-year-old case has reached its judicial conclusion, although the legal battle may continue in appellate courts.
करीब चौबीस वर्षों तक चले कानूनी संघर्ष के बाद पूर्व लखनऊ बार एसोसिएशन अध्यक्ष और वरिष्ठ अधिवक्ता इंद्रदेव सिंह की हत्या के मामले में आखिरकार न्याय का फैसला सामने आया।
लखनऊ की विशेष सीबीआई अदालत ने मंगलवार को विक्रम यादव उर्फ कालिया, पन्ना सिंह और बृजेश यादव को आजीवन कारावास की सजा सुनाते हुए उत्तर प्रदेश के सबसे चर्चित आपराधिक मामलों में से एक का महत्वपूर्ण अध्याय समाप्त कर दिया।
यह फैसला पीड़ित परिवार के लिए भावनात्मक रूप से बेहद महत्वपूर्ण रहा। इंद्रदेव सिंह की पत्नी नयनतारा सिंह और उनकी बेटी लक्ष्मी सिंह, जो वर्तमान में गौतम बुद्ध नगर की पुलिस आयुक्त हैं, अदालत में मौजूद थीं जब विशेष सीबीआई न्यायाधीश वायु नंदन मिश्र ने दोषियों को सजा सुनाई। लगभग 24 वर्षों से जारी कानूनी लड़ाई का यह निर्णायक अंत था।
निर्णय सुनाए जाने के बाद मां-बेटी बिना किसी बयान के अदालत परिसर से बाहर निकल गईं। सुरक्षा कर्मियों ने उन्हें वाहन तक पहुंचाया।
अगस्त 2002 में हुई इस हत्या ने लखनऊ के वकालत जगत को झकझोर दिया था। घटना के बाद अधिवक्ताओं ने व्यापक विरोध प्रदर्शन किया, सड़कें जाम कीं और निष्पक्ष जांच की मांग उठाई। उस समय लक्ष्मी सिंह 28 वर्ष की थीं और भारतीय पुलिस सेवा में अपने शुरुआती कार्यकाल में थीं।
पिता की हत्या के बाद लक्ष्मी सिंह ने अपने मूल पश्चिम बंगाल कैडर से उत्तर प्रदेश में प्रतिनियुक्ति की मांग की थी। तत्कालीन मुख्यमंत्री मायावती ने उनकी तीन वर्ष की प्रतिनियुक्ति को मंजूरी दी, जिससे वे अपने परिवार के साथ रहकर इस लंबे कानूनी संघर्ष का हिस्सा बन सकीं।
यह वारदात 8 अगस्त 2002 की दोपहर हुई। 57 वर्षीय इंद्रदेव सिंह त्योहारों की खरीदारी के लिए परिवार के साथ अमीनाबाद जाने की तैयारी कर रहे थे।
जिला अदालत के पास पत्नी नयनतारा और पुत्र दिग्विजय सिंह से मिलने के बाद वे अपनी मोटरसाइकिल से आगे निकल गए, जबकि पत्नी और बेटा दूसरी बाइक से उनके पीछे चल रहे थे।
जिला अदालत से लगभग पांच सौ मीटर दूर कैसरबाग टेलीफोन एक्सचेंज के निकट दो बाइक सवार हमलावरों ने उन्हें घेर लिया। जांच एजेंसियों के अनुसार, इंद्रदेव सिंह कुछ समझ पाते, उससे पहले पीछे बैठे हमलावर ने बेहद नजदीक से गोली चला दी। गोली उनकी गर्दन में लगी, जिससे उनका संतुलन बिगड़ गया और वे सड़क पर गिर पड़े।
घटना को अपनी आंखों के सामने होते देख नयनतारा और दिग्विजय तुरंत मौके पर पहुंचे। राहगीरों की मदद से उन्हें अस्पताल पहुंचाया गया, लेकिन चिकित्सकों ने जांच के बाद उन्हें मृत घोषित कर दिया।
इस हत्या ने पूरे प्रदेश में आक्रोश पैदा कर दिया और दोषियों की शीघ्र गिरफ्तारी की मांग तेज हो गई।
इसके बाद 30 जून 2026 को विशेष सीबीआई अदालत ने तीनों आरोपियों को हत्या और आपराधिक साजिश का दोषी ठहराया था।
एक अन्य मामले में पहले से जेल में बंद विक्रम यादव हिरासत में ही रहा, जबकि जमानत पर चल रहे पन्ना सिंह और बृजेश यादव को दोषसिद्धि के तुरंत बाद गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया था। उनके लिए सजा पर सुनवाई बाद में निर्धारित की गई।
विशेष सीबीआई अदालत ने तीनों दोषियों को आजीवन कारावास की सजा सुनाने के साथ-साथ उन पर कुल 1.5 लाख रुपये का जुर्माना भी लगाया। सीबीआई के विशेष लोक अभियोजक के.पी. सिंह ने बताया कि अदालत ने जुर्माने की राशि का 80 प्रतिशत हिस्सा शिकायतकर्ता परिवार को मुआवजे के रूप में देने का निर्देश दिया है।
इस आदेश के साथ उत्तर प्रदेश के सबसे लंबे समय तक चले चर्चित आपराधिक मामलों में से एक में न्यायिक प्रक्रिया का महत्वपूर्ण चरण पूरा हो गया।
सजा सुनाए जाने के तुरंत बाद बचाव पक्ष के अधिवक्ता आशीष त्रिपाठी ने कहा कि उनके मुवक्किल इस फैसले को उच्च न्यायालय में चुनौती देंगे। उन्होंने स्पष्ट किया कि दोषसिद्धि और सजा दोनों के खिलाफ विधिक प्रक्रिया के तहत अपील दायर की जाएगी।
इस हत्याकांड की कानूनी प्रक्रिया घटना के तुरंत बाद शुरू हुई थी। इंद्रदेव सिंह की पत्नी नयनतारा सिंह ने कैसरबाग थाने में प्राथमिकी दर्ज कराते हुए आरोप लगाया था कि उनके पति की हत्या का संबंध उनके पूर्व सहयोगी मन्ना लाल गुप्ता के साथ लंबे समय से चल रहे विवाद से है।
शुरुआत में मामले की जांच लखनऊ पुलिस द्वारा गठित विशेष जांच दल (एसआईटी) को सौंपी गई थी। लेकिन अधिवक्ताओं के व्यापक विरोध प्रदर्शन और बढ़ते जनदबाव के बाद वर्ष 2002 में राज्य सरकार ने जांच केंद्रीय अन्वेषण ब्यूरो (सीबीआई) को सौंप दी।
सीबीआई की जांच में सामने आया कि हत्या की जड़ सीतापुर रोड स्थित एक बहुमूल्य जमीन को लेकर चला आ रहा विवाद था। एजेंसी के अनुसार, संपत्ति को लेकर शुरू हुआ मतभेद धीरे-धीरे इतना गहरा हो गया कि उसने आपराधिक साजिश का रूप ले लिया।
अभियोजन पक्ष ने अदालत को बताया कि इंद्रदेव सिंह ने उक्त भूमि खरीदी थी और उसके विकास की जिम्मेदारी अपने सहयोगी मन्ना लाल गुप्ता, जो पूर्व लेखपाल होने के साथ वकालत भी करते थे, को सौंपी थी। योजना थी कि जमीन का आवासीय प्लॉटों में विकास कर उन्हें खरीदारों को बेचा जाएगा।
जांच के दौरान यह आरोप सामने आया कि समय के साथ दोनों के संबंध बिगड़ने लगे। अभियोजन के मुताबिक मन्ना लाल ने संभावित खरीदारों से प्राप्त अग्रिम राशि और बुकिंग धनराशि का सही हिसाब नहीं रखा। वित्तीय लेनदेन में कथित अनियमितताओं का पता चलने पर इंद्रदेव सिंह ने उन पर कई संपत्ति सौदों में धोखाधड़ी के आरोप लगाए।
सीबीआई का दावा था कि विवाद बढ़ने के बाद मन्ना लाल ने इंद्रदेव सिंह को रास्ते से हटाने की साजिश रची। एजेंसी के अनुसार, इसी योजना के तहत पेशेवर शूटरों की मदद लेकर हत्या को अंजाम दिया गया।
जांच एजेंसी ने अदालत को बताया कि विक्रम यादव उर्फ कालिया, जो आपराधिक मामलों में पहले से नामजद रहा था, ने मोटरसाइकिल की पिछली सीट पर बैठकर इंद्रदेव सिंह पर जानलेवा गोली चलाई।
बाइक बृजेश यादव चला रहा था, जबकि पन्ना सिंह को भी पूरी साजिश में सक्रिय भूमिका निभाने का आरोपी बनाया गया।
सीबीआई ने 7 अगस्त 2003 को हत्या और आपराधिक षड्यंत्र के आरोपों के तहत छह लोगों के खिलाफ आरोपपत्र दाखिल किया। लगभग ढाई दशक तक चले मुकदमे के दौरान अभियोजन पक्ष ने 50 गवाहों के बयान दर्ज कराए, जबकि बचाव पक्ष ने अपनी ओर से कोई गवाह पेश नहीं किया।
अब सजा सुनाए जाने के साथ यह बहुचर्चित मामला न्यायिक स्तर पर अपने निर्णायक मुकाम पर पहुंच गया है, हालांकि दोषियों की प्रस्तावित अपील के बाद कानूनी प्रक्रिया आगे भी जारी रह सकती है।
