US Charges Lawrence Bishnoi in Hardeep Singh Nijjar Murder Case, 37 Accused Named in Global Organised Crime Crackdown

Washington/New Delhi: Jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, the alleged head of the Bishnoi criminal network, has been named among those charged by United States authorities in connection with the alleged conspiracy to assassinate prominent Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia, Canada, three years ago.

The development emerged after the US Department of Justice (DOJ) made public a series of previously sealed indictments detailing an extensive international investigation into organised criminal networks.

According to the newly released court documents, a total of 37 individuals have been charged in the United States in connection with a wide range of offences, including extortion, narcotics trafficking, kidnapping, armed attacks and other organised criminal activities.

The indictments form part of a broader effort by US law enforcement agencies to dismantle transnational crime syndicates allegedly operating across several countries.

Federal prosecutors said the accused include individuals associated with three major India-based organised crime groups, including the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

Authorities described the action as a coordinated cross-border operation targeting criminal networks accused of carrying out violent offences in multiple jurisdictions.

Investigators confirmed that three suspects were arrested in Canada, while 11 others remain at large and are believed to be located in the United States, India, and several European countries.

In an official statement issued on July 7, the US Department of Justice said law enforcement agencies from the United States, Canada, and Europe jointly arrested 24 accused, including 11 individuals in California.

The statement added that the operation targeted three India-based transnational organised crime groups allegedly responsible for a series of criminal activities, including the 2023 killing in Canada of a prominent Indian political and religious figure.

The investigation, codenamed “Operation Hard Ball,” is the outcome of a multi-year federal probe into the activities of Indian-origin organised crime syndicates.

According to investigators, the groups are accused of engaging in racketeering, targeted assassinations, shootings, extortion, large-scale international drug trafficking, and other organised criminal operations affecting communities in several countries, particularly members of the Indian diaspora.

The case has also drawn international attention because of Canada’s earlier action against the Bishnoi network.

In September 2025, the Canadian government officially designated the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist organisation, citing concerns over its alleged involvement in transnational criminal activities.

वॉशिंगटन/नई दिल्ली: अमेरिका ने कनाडा में तीन वर्ष पहले हुई प्रमुख खालिस्तानी अलगाववादी नेता हरदीप सिंह निज्जर की हत्या की कथित साजिश के मामले में जेल में बंद गैंगस्टर लॉरेंस बिश्नोई को भी आरोपियों में शामिल किया है।

यह जानकारी अमेरिकी न्याय विभाग (यूएस डिपार्टमेंट ऑफ जस्टिस) द्वारा सार्वजनिक किए गए उन आरोपपत्रों से सामने आई है, जिन्हें अब तक गोपनीय रखा गया था। इन दस्तावेजों में अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर सक्रिय संगठित अपराध नेटवर्क के खिलाफ बड़े अभियान का उल्लेख किया गया है।

जारी आरोपपत्रों के अनुसार अमेरिका में कुल 37 लोगों के खिलाफ विभिन्न गंभीर आपराधिक मामलों में आरोप तय किए गए हैं।

इन पर जबरन वसूली, मादक पदार्थों की तस्करी, अपहरण, गोलीबारी, हिंसक वारदातों और अन्य संगठित आपराधिक गतिविधियों में शामिल होने के आरोप लगाए गए हैं। अमेरिकी एजेंसियों का कहना है कि यह कार्रवाई अंतरराष्ट्रीय अपराध सिंडिकेट के खिलाफ चलाए जा रहे व्यापक अभियान का हिस्सा है।

संघीय अभियोजकों के मुताबिक आरोपियों में भारत से संचालित तीन प्रमुख आपराधिक गिरोहों से जुड़े कई लोग शामिल हैं, जिनमें लॉरेंस बिश्नोई गिरोह का नाम भी है। अधिकारियों ने इसे सीमाओं के पार फैले संगठित अपराध के खिलाफ समन्वित कार्रवाई बताया।

जांच एजेंसियों के अनुसार तीन आरोपियों को कनाडा में गिरफ्तार किया गया, जबकि 11 अन्य आरोपी अब भी फरार हैं और उनके अमेरिका, भारत तथा यूरोप के विभिन्न देशों में होने की आशंका है।

7 जुलाई को जारी अमेरिकी न्याय विभाग के आधिकारिक बयान में कहा गया कि अमेरिका, कनाडा और यूरोप की कानून प्रवर्तन एजेंसियों ने संयुक्त अभियान के दौरान 24 आरोपियों को गिरफ्तार किया है।

इनमें 11 गिरफ्तारियां कैलिफोर्निया में हुईं। विभाग के अनुसार यह कार्रवाई भारत से संचालित तीन अंतरराष्ट्रीय संगठित अपराध समूहों के खिलाफ की गई, जिन पर कनाडा में 2023 में एक प्रमुख भारतीय राजनीतिक एवं धार्मिक नेता की हत्या सहित कई गंभीर अपराधों में शामिल होने का आरोप है।

“ऑपरेशन हार्ड बॉल” नाम से चलाए गए इस अभियान को कई वर्षों तक चली संघीय जांच का परिणाम बताया गया है। जांच एजेंसियों का आरोप है कि संबंधित आपराधिक गिरोह जबरन वसूली, लक्षित हत्याएं, गोलीबारी, अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर मादक पदार्थों की तस्करी और अन्य संगठित आपराधिक गतिविधियों में शामिल रहे हैं।

इन गतिविधियों का असर दुनिया के कई देशों, विशेष रूप से भारतीय मूल के प्रवासी समुदायों पर पड़ा है।

इस मामले को लेकर कनाडा पहले भी कड़ा कदम उठा चुका है। सितंबर 2025 में कनाडा सरकार ने बिश्नोई गैंग को आधिकारिक रूप से आतंकी संगठन घोषित किया था। सरकार ने यह फैसला गिरोह की कथित अंतरराष्ट्रीय आपराधिक गतिविधियों और सुरक्षा संबंधी चिंताओं को आधार बनाकर लिया था।
