Missing Medical Jet From Bermuda Found in Atlantic, Six Feared Dead as Debris Discovered Near Nantucket

The Gulfstream G100 vanished while flying from Bermuda to Massachusetts after reporting electrical trouble during severe weather; US and Canadian authorities continue the search for those aboard.

BOSTON: The search for a medical transport aircraft that disappeared over the Atlantic during a flight from Bermuda to Massachusetts has entered a grim new phase after rescuers located wreckage off the coast of Nantucket.

The US Coast Guard said Sunday that the debris had been positively linked to the missing aircraft. Search teams, however, were still looking for the six people who were aboard the jet as the operation continued along the Nantucket coastline.

The aircraft, a Gulfstream G100 operating as an air ambulance, had two passengers and four crew members on board. The group comprised four Canadian nationals and two people from Bermuda, according to the Coast Guard.

Authorities said the families of those aboard had been informed as the search continued.

Aircraft disappeared during overnight flight.

The jet, identified by tail number CGRJP, was travelling toward Massachusetts when contact with air traffic controllers was lost.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Coast Guard was alerted at about 2 am local time on Saturday after the aircraft stopped communicating with controllers.

Flight-tracking data later provided investigators with a picture of the aircraft’s final moments.

According to FlightRadar24, the Gulfstream had reached approximately 24,000 feet before undergoing a dramatic descent. It lost roughly 14,000 feet in about two minutes, plunging to around 10,000 feet.

The circumstances surrounding that rapid loss of altitude remain under investigation.

Pilot reportedly warned of electrical problems.

Air traffic control recordings indicate that the crew may have encountered serious difficulties shortly before communication with the aircraft was lost.

Audio published by LiveATC.net suggests the pilot reported electrical problems and declared an emergency.

In the exchange, a controller appeared to seek clarification after the pilot indicated that the aircraft was effectively operating without normal visibility or instrumentation, asking whether the crew was “coming in blind”.

The reported communication occurred as a storm was affecting the area.

Investigators will now have to determine whether the weather, the reported electrical malfunction,n or another technical problem contributed to the aircraft’s disappearance.

Coast Guard continues overnight search

The Coast Guard said the discovery of the wreckage does not mark the end of the rescue operation.

The cutter William Sparling was expected to continue searching through the night, while other search resources remained focused on waters near Nantucket.

Officials have not yet announced whether any of the six people aboard have been located.

The discovery of the debris field is expected to provide investigators with important evidence about where and how the aircraft went down.

Bermuda and Canada express concern

Bermuda Premier David Burt appealed for hope while search teams continued their work.

He said authorities were praying that all six people aboard would be found alive.

Canada’s Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon also expressed concern for those on the aircraft and their families.

MacKinnon said Canadian authorities were closely following developments and coordinating with agencies involved in the search-and-rescue effort.

He also thanked emergency personnel and other first responders working in difficult conditions to locate the missing aircraft’s occupants.

Families await answers

The aircraft was being used for medical transportation, adding another layer of urgency to the overnight search.

The Coast Guard has confirmed the nationalities of everyone aboard and said relatives had been notified.

But many questions remain unanswered, including what caused the aircraft to lose contact, whether the reported electrical malfunction was related to the rapid descent, ent and how severely the weather affected the crew’s ability to control or navigate the aircraft.

The wreckage discovered near Nantucket should help investigators reconstruct the aircraft’s final flight path and determine the circumstances that led to the crash.

For search teams, however, the immediate priority remains finding the six people who were aboard the medical transport jet.

LiveATC.net
