Mumbai Doctors Missing in Nepal-Tibet Flash Flood During Kailash Mansarovar Journey

 Five doctors, including veteran Mumbai mountaineer Dr Milind Chitley and his wife, are among Indian pilgrims missing after a devastating flash flood near the Nepal-Tibet border.

Mumbai: Families across Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai and other cities are desperately waiting for information about dozens of Indian pilgrims who lost contact with their relatives after a devastating flash flood struck a key route near the Nepal-Tibet border.

Among those unaccounted for are five doctors from Mumbai, including 64-year-old Dr Milind P Chitley, a well-known family physician and veteran Himalayan mountaineer.

His wife, Dr Megha Chitley, a pathologist, was travelling with him.

Dr Chitley was leading a group of 61 Indian travellers on a Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage when the group was caught in the wider disruption caused by flooding in the region.

The travellers included residents of Mumbai and Pune as well as pilgrims from several other parts of India.

The group was expected to pass through the affected corridor on August 26. Since the disaster, relatives have been struggling to establish communication with many of the travellers.

Families Search for Information

For Swanand Subhedar of Kalyan, the uncertainty has become deeply distressing.

His elderly father, Sunil Sudarshan Subhedar, was travelling with Dr Chitley’s group, but the family has been unable to contact him since Wednesday evening.

Relatives of other pilgrims are also approaching authorities in Nepal and India, including the Ministry of External Affairs, in the hope of obtaining confirmation about the whereabouts of their family members.

Rahul Desai, whose father-in-law Avanish Merchant was part of the same group, said the family had shared all available details with the authorities while continuing their search through every possible official channel.

Merchant’s family remains hopeful that contact will eventually be restored.

His daughter said they were awaiting information about her father, another family from their residential building and other pilgrims from Vile Parle who had travelled together.

The family stressed that the group was undertaking a religious journey to Kailash Mansarovar and was not on a conventional trekking expedition.

Senior Doctors Also Missing

The list of missing travellers includes Dr Anand Deshpande, who heads the blood bank at Hinduja Hospital, and his wife, Dr Gayatri Deshpande, who leads the department of gynaecology and obstetrics at Nanavati Hospital.

Hospital authorities said they were in contact with the couple’s daughter in Bengaluru but had not yet received any confirmed information about her parents.

Efforts were also underway to obtain details from the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.

A list of rescued people received by hospital authorities reportedly did not include Dr Gayatri Deshpande.

Representatives linked to Max Hospitals, which manages Nanavati Hospital, were also seeking information in Kathmandu.

Another doctor, dentist Dr Meenakshi Ramani, is also among those reported missing, along with members of her family.

Her husband, Dr Sanjay Ramani, has appealed for information while relatives and acquaintances try to contact emergency helplines and government agencies.

Former Maharashtra health minister Dr Deepak Sawant said the situation had left the families deeply traumatised.

Search Extends Across Several States

The concern is not limited to Maharashtra.

Thirty-three-year-old Arushi Gupta from Hyderabad was also part of the larger group. Her last known location was reported to be near the Rasuwa Customs office on the Nepal-Tibet frontier.

Her uncle, Subir Jha, has created a WhatsApp group bringing together relatives of missing travellers so that information received from authorities and other sources can be shared quickly.

From Chennai, Sree Veerendra Kumar has sought assistance from the Union government in locating Venkataram Annamdevara and Anagha Annamdevara, who were also travelling with the group.

According to information shared by the family, Venkataram last spoke to his daughter at around 7 am before beginning the onward journey.

No contact could be established with either traveller afterwards.

A Veteran Mountaineer Familiar With Himalayan Emergencies

The disappearance of Dr Milind Chitley has particularly alarmed the mountaineering community because of his extensive experience in the Himalayas.

Chitley began mountaineering during his student years at Grant Medical College in the early 1980s and later completed both basic and advanced training at the mountaineering institute in Darjeeling.

His career took him to some of the most demanding high-altitude environments.

In 1988, he was selected as the climbing doctor for the First Indian Civilian Expedition to Kanchenjunga.

During the expedition, he provided medical assistance to climbers suffering from severe high-altitude illnesses, including pulmonary edema and hypothermia.

He also treated frostbite cases and helped arrange further medical care for affected climbers after their return.

Over the years, he developed expertise in combining medical knowledge with mountain rescue and high-altitude emergency care.

He later wrote and contributed to literature on first aid and rescue in the Himalayas.

Chitley also conducted training programmes for mountaineers, often offering first-aid education and emergency response guidance without charging participating organisations.

In recognition of his contribution to mountaineering, he received the Girimitra Mountaineer Award in 2005.

Friends say he had travelled to Nepal more than 18 times and led numerous trekking and climbing expeditions in the region.

As large-scale search and rescue efforts continue after the devastating flash flood, families of the missing pilgrims are now waiting for one piece of news above all others — confirmation that their loved ones have been found safe.

 नेपाल-तिब्बत सीमा के पास आई भीषण फ्लैश फ्लड के बाद कैलाश मानसरोवर यात्रा पर गए 61 भारतीय यात्रियों से संपर्क टूट गया है। मुंबई के पांच डॉक्टरों का भी पता नहीं चल पाया है।

मुंबई: नेपाल और तिब्बत की सीमा के पास आई विनाशकारी फ्लैश फ्लड के बाद कैलाश मानसरोवर यात्रा पर गए कई भारतीय यात्रियों से संपर्क टूट गया है।

इनमें मुंबई के पांच डॉक्टर भी शामिल हैं। देश के अलग-अलग शहरों में उनके परिवार अब राहत एजेंसियों और सरकारी अधिकारियों से किसी ठोस जानकारी की प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं।

लापता लोगों में अंधेरी निवासी डॉ. मिलिंद पी. चिटले और उनकी पत्नी डॉ. मेघा चिटले भी शामिल हैं।

डॉ. मिलिंद चिटले पेशे से फैमिली फिजिशियन होने के साथ-साथ देश के अनुभवी पर्वतारोहियों में गिने जाते हैं, जबकि उनकी पत्नी पैथोलॉजिस्ट हैं।

64 वर्षीय डॉ. चिटले 61 भारतीय यात्रियों के एक समूह के साथ कैलाश मानसरोवर की यात्रा पर थे और इस दल का नेतृत्व कर रहे थे। यात्रियों में मुंबई और पुणे के लोगों के अलावा अन्य राज्यों के श्रद्धालु भी शामिल थे।

यह समूह 26 अगस्त को उस रास्ते से आगे बढ़ने वाला था, जो बाद में बाढ़ से प्रभावित हो गया। इसके बाद से कई यात्रियों के परिवारों से उनका संपर्क नहीं हो सका है।

परिजनों की बढ़ी बेचैनी, हर जगह से मांगी जा रही जानकारी

कल्याण निवासी स्वानंद सुभेदार के पिता सुनील सुदर्शन सुभेदार भी डॉ. चिटले के नेतृत्व वाले समूह में शामिल थे। स्वानंद का कहना है कि बुधवार शाम से उनके पिता का फोन संपर्क से बाहर है।

कई परिवार नेपाल के अधिकारियों से लेकर भारत के विदेश मंत्रालय तक लगातार संपर्क कर रहे हैं। उन्हें उम्मीद है कि बचाव अभियान आगे बढ़ने के साथ उनके परिजनों के बारे में कोई जानकारी मिल सकेगी।

समूह में शामिल अविनाश मर्चेंट के दामाद राहुल देसाई ने बताया कि परिवार ने संबंधित एजेंसियों को उनकी पहचान और अन्य आवश्यक जानकारियां उपलब्ध करा दी हैं।

मर्चेंट की बेटी ने उम्मीद जताई कि उनके पिता और यात्रा दल के अन्य सदस्यों से जल्द संपर्क हो सकता है।

उन्होंने बताया कि उनके पिता के साथ उनके आवासीय परिसर का एक अन्य परिवार और विले पार्ले के दो अन्य परिवारों के सदस्य भी यात्रा कर रहे थे।

परिवार ने स्पष्ट किया कि यह एक धार्मिक तीर्थयात्रा थी और इसे सामान्य पर्वतारोहण या ट्रेकिंग अभियान के रूप में नहीं देखा जाना चाहिए।

अस्पतालों के वरिष्ठ डॉक्टर भी समूह में शामिल

लापता यात्रियों में हिंदुजा अस्पताल के ब्लड बैंक प्रमुख डॉ. आनंद देशपांडे और उनकी पत्नी डॉ. गायत्री देशपांडे भी शामिल हैं। डॉ. गायत्री देशपांडे नानावटी अस्पताल में स्त्री रोग एवं प्रसूति विभाग की प्रमुख हैं।

अस्पताल प्रशासन ने बताया कि वह बेंगलुरु में रह रही दंपति की बेटी के संपर्क में है, लेकिन अब तक उनके बारे में कोई पुख्ता जानकारी नहीं मिल सकी है।

अस्पताल से जुड़े अधिकारियों ने भारतीय दूतावास, काठमांडू से भी संपर्क किया है। बचाए गए लोगों की उपलब्ध सूची में डॉ. गायत्री देशपांडे का नाम नहीं मिला है।

नानावटी अस्पताल का प्रबंधन करने वाले मैक्स हॉस्पिटल्स से जुड़े अधिकारी भी काठमांडू में जानकारी जुटाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं।

लापता लोगों में दंत चिकित्सक डॉ. मीनाक्षी रमानी और उनके कुछ रिश्तेदार भी शामिल बताए गए हैं। उनके पति डॉ. संजय रमानी ने सहायता के लिए विभिन्न हेल्पलाइन नंबरों पर संपर्क किया है।

पूर्व स्वास्थ्य मंत्री डॉ. दीपक सावंत ने कहा कि परिवारों की चिंता लगातार बढ़ रही है और कई लोग मानसिक रूप से बेहद परेशान हैं।

हैदराबाद और चेन्नई के यात्रियों का भी पता नहीं

यह संकट केवल महाराष्ट्र तक सीमित नहीं है।

हैदराबाद की 33 वर्षीय आरुषि गुप्ता भी इस यात्रा दल का हिस्सा थीं। उनका आखिरी ज्ञात स्थान नेपाल-तिब्बत सीमा के पास रसुवा कस्टम्स कार्यालय बताया गया है।

उनके चाचा सुबीर झा ने लापता यात्रियों के परिजनों को एक साथ जोड़ने के लिए एक व्हाट्सऐप समूह बनाया है, ताकि किसी भी एजेंसी या बचाव दल से मिलने वाली जानकारी तुरंत संबंधित परिवारों तक पहुंच सके।

चेन्नई से श्री वीरेंद्र कुमार ने भी केंद्र सरकार से सहायता की अपील की है। उनके अनुसार, वेंकटराम अन्नमदेवरा और अनघा अन्नमदेवरा भी इसी यात्रा समूह के साथ थे।

परिवार के मुताबिक, वेंकटराम ने यात्रा के अगले चरण के लिए रवाना होने से पहले सुबह करीब 7 बजे अपनी बेटी से अंतिम बार बात की थी। उसके बाद से दोनों से संपर्क नहीं हो पाया है।

डॉ. चिटले को हिमालयी आपात स्थितियों का लंबा अनुभव

डॉ. मिलिंद चिटले के लापता होने की खबर ने पर्वतारोहण समुदाय को भी चिंतित कर दिया है। उन्हें हिमालय में चिकित्सा सहायता और ऊंचाई से जुड़ी आपात स्थितियों का व्यापक अनुभव रहा है।

उन्होंने 1983-84 के आसपास ग्रांट मेडिकल कॉलेज में पढ़ाई के दौरान पर्वतारोहण शुरू किया था। बाद में उन्होंने दार्जिलिंग स्थित पर्वतारोहण संस्थान से बुनियादी और उन्नत प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त किया।

वर्ष 1988 में उन्हें कंचनजंगा पर जाने वाले प्रथम भारतीय नागरिक अभियान में क्लाइम्बिंग डॉक्टर के रूप में चुना गया था।

इस अभियान के दौरान उन्होंने ऊंचाई से जुड़ी गंभीर स्वास्थ्य समस्याओं से जूझ रहे पर्वतारोहियों की मदद की।

उनके मित्रों के अनुसार, डॉ. चिटले ने हाई एल्टीट्यूड पल्मोनरी एडिमा, हाइपोथर्मिया और फ्रॉस्टबाइट जैसी गंभीर स्थितियों से पीड़ित पर्वतारोहियों का उपचार किया और जरूरत पड़ने पर उन्हें आगे के इलाज के लिए सुरक्षित वापस लाने में भी मदद की।

बाद के वर्षों में उन्होंने पर्वतारोहण, प्राथमिक उपचार और हिमालयी बचाव कार्य से संबंधित ज्ञान को प्रशिक्षण और पुस्तकों के माध्यम से साझा किया।

1990-91 के दौरान उन्होंने पर्वतारोहियों के लिए प्राथमिक उपचार प्रशिक्षण कार्यक्रम शुरू किए और कई संगठनों के लिए बिना शुल्क ऐसे शिविर आयोजित किए।

पर्वतारोहण के क्षेत्र में योगदान के लिए उन्हें 2005 में प्रतिष्ठित गिरिमित्र माउंटेनियर पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया।

वह 18 से अधिक बार नेपाल जा चुके हैं और कई जटिल ट्रेकिंग तथा पर्वतारोहण अभियानों का नेतृत्व कर चुके हैं।

अब इस अनुभवी पर्वतारोही और उनके साथ यात्रा कर रहे अन्य भारतीयों के बारे में कोई ठोस खबर मिलने का इंतजार किया जा रहा है।

नेपाल में जारी खोज एवं बचाव अभियान के बीच लापता यात्रियों के परिवारों की सबसे बड़ी उम्मीद यही है कि उनके अपने जल्द सुरक्षित मिल जाएं।
