Amritsar ASI Killing: Police Say Suspect Deepak Singh Dies in Encounter, Family Questions Allegations
Police allege Pakistan-based handlers ordered the attack; suspect’s parents deny knowledge of any cross-border links and say he had been missing for days.
Amritsar: A man accused in the killing of Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjeet Singh was killed in a police encounter in Amritsar, Punjab Police said, while his family has disputed the allegations surrounding his alleged involvement in the attack.
Police Commissioner Harmanbir Singh Gill identified the deceased as 20-year-old Deepak Singh of Mule Chak village.
According to the police account, Deepak and another man were travelling on a scooter when a police team attempted to intercept them at a checkpoint on Thande Road during the night between Saturday and Sunday.
The police said the two men did not stop and instead fled, leading officers into a chase.
Investigators allege that the suspects subsequently fired four rounds at the pursuing police personnel.
According to the police version, two bullets struck the police vehicle, and another hit the bullet-resistant jacket of a Counter Intelligence officer.
The officers then returned fire, discharging six rounds in what they described as self-defence.
Deepak was hit during the exchange and was taken towards a hospital, but police said he died while being transported.
The second man accompanying him managed to escape and is being sought.
Police allege cross-border instructions.
The encounter came amid an investigation into the September 18 killing of ASI Harjeet Singh in the Dana Mandi area.
Punjab Police have alleged that the attack on the officer was carried out on the instructions of handlers based in Pakistan.
Deepak was subsequently identified by investigators as one of the suspects allegedly connected with the killing.
The police allegations regarding his alleged links across the border have, however, not been accepted by his family.
Family says Deepak worked as a labourer.
Deepak’s parents told authorities that their son earned a living installing telecommunications towers.
They said he spent considerable time away from home and was not regularly present with the family.
The family also alleged that Deepak had been wrongly implicated in a narcotics case in September after being accused of possessing 500 grams of contraband under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
His parents further said they had never heard him speak about having contact with anyone in Pakistan or receiving instructions to attack police personnel.
They also claimed they were unaware of the people with whom he may have been associating.
Family says he had been missing.
According to his parents, Deepak had not been at home for approximately three to four days before the encounter.
They said they had been trying to locate him and had approached the Makboolpura Gate police station in their search.
The family intended to take him before the authorities with the village Sarpanch after finding him, they said.
Instead, the family discovered that Deepak had been killed during the police operation. They said they learned of his death through television news reports.
The circumstances surrounding the encounter, the police allegations regarding Deepak’s role in the ASI’s killing, and the claims made by his family remain part of the broader investigation.

अमृतसर ASI हत्याकांड: पुलिस मुठभेड़ में आरोपी दीपक सिंह की मौत, परिवार ने आरोपों पर उठाए सवाल
अमृतसर: सहायक सब-इंस्पेक्टर (ASI) हरजीत सिंह की हत्या के मामले में आरोपी बताए जा रहे 20 वर्षीय दीपक सिंह की अमृतसर में पुलिस मुठभेड़ के दौरान मौत हो गई।
पंजाब पुलिस ने उसे मामले में संदिग्ध बताया है, जबकि उसके परिवार ने उसके खिलाफ लगाए गए आरोपों और कथित सीमा पार संबंधों से इनकार किया है।
पुलिस कमिश्नर हरमनबीर सिंह गिल के अनुसार, मृतक की पहचान मुले चक गांव निवासी दीपक सिंह के रूप में हुई है।
पुलिस का कहना है कि शनिवार और रविवार की दरम्यानी रात दीपक एक अन्य व्यक्ति के साथ स्कूटर पर जा रहा था, तभी ठंडे रोड पर लगाए गए नाके पर पुलिस ने उसे रुकने का संकेत दिया।
पुलिस के मुताबिक, दोनों ने रुकने के बजाय वाहन तेज कर दिया और वहां से निकलने की कोशिश की। इसके बाद पुलिस टीम ने उनका पीछा किया।
अधिकारियों का आरोप है कि पीछा किए जाने के दौरान संदिग्धों ने पुलिसकर्मियों की ओर चार गोलियां चलाईं।
पुलिस ने दावा किया कि इनमें से दो गोलियां पुलिस वाहन में लगीं, जबकि एक गोली काउंटर इंटेलिजेंस के एक अधिकारी की बुलेटप्रूफ जैकेट से टकराई।
अधिकारियों के अनुसार, इसके बाद पुलिस टीम ने आत्मरक्षा में छह गोलियां चलाईं। गोलीबारी में दीपक घायल हो गया। उसे अस्पताल ले जाने का प्रयास किया गया, लेकिन रास्ते में उसकी मौत हो गई। उसके साथ मौजूद दूसरा व्यक्ति मौके से भागने में सफल रहा।
ASI की हत्या में पाकिस्तान स्थित हैंडलरों का आरोप
यह मुठभेड़ 18 सितंबर की रात दाना मंडी इलाके में ASI हरजीत सिंह की हत्या की जांच के बीच हुई।
पंजाब पुलिस का आरोप है कि ASI पर हमला पाकिस्तान में बैठे हैंडलरों के निर्देश पर कराया गया था। जांचकर्ताओं ने दीपक को इस मामले से जुड़े संदिग्धों में शामिल बताया।
हालांकि, दीपक के परिवार ने पुलिस के इस दावे को स्वीकार नहीं किया है।
परिवार का दावा-टेलीकॉम टावर लगाने का काम करता था दीपक
दीपक के माता-पिता के मुताबिक, उनका बेटा टेलीकॉम टावर लगाने का काम करता था। उन्होंने बताया कि दीपक अक्सर घर से बाहर रहता था और लंबे समय तक परिवार के संपर्क में नहीं रहता था।
परिवार ने यह भी दावा किया कि सितंबर में दीपक को कथित तौर पर 500 ग्राम नशीला पदार्थ रखने के आरोप में फंसाया गया था और उसके खिलाफ एनडीपीएस एक्ट के तहत मामला दर्ज किया गया था।
माता-पिता ने पुलिस के कथित सीमा पार संपर्कों के आरोप से भी इनकार किया। उनका कहना है कि दीपक ने कभी उनसे पाकिस्तान में किसी व्यक्ति के संपर्क या पुलिसकर्मियों को निशाना बनाने के निर्देश मिलने की बात नहीं कही थी।
परिवार ने यह भी कहा कि उन्हें दीपक के किसी कथित साथी या उसके साथ रहने वाले लोगों के बारे में जानकारी नहीं थी।
मुठभेड़ से पहले कई दिनों से घर नहीं लौटा था
परिजनों के अनुसार, मुठभेड़ से पहले दीपक करीब तीन से चार दिनों से घर नहीं आया था। परिवार उसकी तलाश में जुटा था और उन्होंने मकबूलपुरा गेट पुलिस स्टेशन में भी उसके बारे में जानकारी लेने की कोशिश की थी।
माता-पिता का कहना है कि दीपक के मिलने के बाद वे उसे गांव के सरपंच के साथ पुलिस के सामने पेश करने की योजना बना रहे थे।
लेकिन इससे पहले ही उन्हें उसके पुलिस मुठभेड़ में मारे जाने की जानकारी मिली। परिवार के मुताबिक, उन्हें दीपक की मौत का पता स्थानीय टेलीविजन समाचारों के जरिए चला।
फिलहाल पुलिस के आरोप, मुठभेड़ की परिस्थितियां और परिवार की ओर से सामने रखे गए दावे इस मामले की जांच के महत्वपूर्ण हिस्से हैं।
