NEET PG 2026 Gets Major Overhaul: Single Shift Exam, More City Choices, Fewer Questions and Stronger Security
New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday unveiled a series of significant changes for candidates appearing in NEET PG 2026, introducing several student-friendly measures ahead of the nationwide entrance examination scheduled for August 30.
The reforms were announced after Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda reviewed the preparedness of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), which is responsible for conducting the postgraduate medical entrance test.
Breaking from the previous format, this year’s examination will be conducted in a single session across the country.
More than 1,300 examination centres spread across nearly 340 cities have been designated to ensure smooth conduct of the test.
In a major relief for aspirants, candidates will now be permitted to select three preferred examination cities, along with their respective states, in the order of priority while submitting their applications.
To help candidates make travel arrangements well in advance, the examination authority will upload the test city intimation slip on the official portal around three weeks before the examination.
The advance notification is expected to reduce last-minute uncertainty and enable students to plan transportation and accommodation more efficiently.
The examination pattern has also undergone an important revision.
The total number of questions has been reduced from 200 to 180, while the overall duration of the examination remains unchanged at three hours and thirty minutes (210 minutes).
With fewer questions and the same amount of time, candidates will have additional time to analyse and respond to each question more carefully.
In a move aimed at enhancing transparency and preventing impersonation, the ministry has strengthened the candidate verification process.
Aadhaar-based authentication will be implemented both during online registration and at examination centres on the day of the test.
If fingerprint verification is unsuccessful, iris-based biometric authentication will be used as an alternative to ensure seamless identity verification.
Official figures released by the government indicate that 2,73,183 candidates have registered for NEET PG 2026, reflecting a rise of more than 12.5 per cent compared with the previous year’s registrations.
The substantial increase in applications highlights the growing competition for postgraduate medical seats across the country.

नई दिल्ली: केंद्रीय स्वास्थ्य एवं परिवार कल्याण मंत्रालय ने शनिवार को NEET PG 2026 में शामिल होने वाले अभ्यर्थियों के लिए कई महत्वपूर्ण सुधारों की घोषणा की।
30 अगस्त को प्रस्तावित राष्ट्रीय पात्रता सह प्रवेश परीक्षा (स्नातकोत्तर) से पहले केंद्रीय स्वास्थ्य मंत्री जगत प्रकाश नड्डा ने परीक्षा आयोजित करने वाली संस्था नेशनल बोर्ड ऑफ एग्जामिनेशंस इन मेडिकल साइंसेज (एनबीईएमएस) की तैयारियों की समीक्षा की और अभ्यर्थियों की सुविधा तथा परीक्षा प्रक्रिया को अधिक पारदर्शी बनाने के उद्देश्य से कई नई व्यवस्थाओं को मंजूरी दी।
इस वर्ष पहली बार NEET PG 2026 का आयोजन पूरे देश में एक ही शिफ्ट में किया जाएगा। परीक्षा के लिए लगभग 340 शहरों में 1,300 से अधिक परीक्षा केंद्र बनाए गए हैं।
अभ्यर्थियों को राहत देते हुए अब आवेदन के दौरान तीन पसंदीदा परीक्षा शहरों तथा उनसे संबंधित राज्यों का चयन प्राथमिकता क्रम में करने की सुविधा प्रदान की गई है।
यात्रा और ठहरने की बेहतर योजना बनाने के लिए परीक्षा प्राधिकरण निर्धारित परीक्षा तिथि से लगभग तीन सप्ताह पहले आधिकारिक वेबसाइट पर टेस्ट सिटी इंटिमेशन स्लिप जारी करेगा।
इससे उम्मीदवारों को समय रहते अपनी यात्रा और अन्य व्यवस्थाएं सुनिश्चित करने में सुविधा मिलेगी तथा अंतिम समय की परेशानियों से राहत मिलेगी।
परीक्षा के प्रारूप में भी महत्वपूर्ण बदलाव किया गया है। प्रश्नों की संख्या 200 से घटाकर 180 कर दी गई है, जबकि परीक्षा की कुल अवधि तीन घंटे 30 मिनट (210 मिनट) ही रहेगी।
इससे प्रत्येक प्रश्न को हल करने के लिए अभ्यर्थियों को पहले की तुलना में अधिक समय उपलब्ध होगा और वे अधिक सोच-समझकर उत्तर दे सकेंगे।
परीक्षा की सुरक्षा और उम्मीदवारों की पहचान को और मजबूत बनाने के लिए मंत्रालय ने आधार आधारित प्रमाणीकरण को अनिवार्य प्रक्रिया का हिस्सा बनाया है।
आवेदन के समय तथा परीक्षा केंद्र पर अभ्यर्थियों की पहचान आधार के माध्यम से सत्यापित की जाएगी। यदि किसी कारणवश फिंगरप्रिंट सत्यापन सफल नहीं होता है तो आइरिस आधारित बायोमेट्रिक सत्यापन का उपयोग किया जाएगा।
सरकारी आंकड़ों के अनुसार NEET PG 2026 के लिए इस बार 2,73,183 अभ्यर्थियों ने आवेदन किया है।
यह संख्या पिछले वर्ष की तुलना में 12.5 प्रतिशत से अधिक वृद्धि दर्शाती है, जो देशभर में स्नातकोत्तर चिकित्सा पाठ्यक्रमों में प्रवेश के लिए बढ़ती प्रतिस्पर्धा को रेखांकित करती है।
