Nepal Flood Horror Turns Into Miracle as Woman Found Alive After 11 Days Under Debris
Rescuers searching the ruins of a flood-destroyed home in Betrawati heard a faint cry for help and discovered 64-year-old Chandika Kumari Shrestha trapped inside.
For rescue workers digging through the wreckage of Nepal’s flood-hit Betrawati, the search had largely become a grim exercise in recovering bodies.
Then came a sound that changed everything — a faint plea from beneath the ruins.
Buried inside what remained of a four-storey house was 64-year-old Chandika Kumari Shrestha, still alive.
Her discovery came on the 11th day after the devastating floods struck the area.
By then, her family had already begun observing the traditional mourning period, convinced that she had perished after the torrent swept away her home.
The breakthrough came when police officer Mahendra Darnal and other rescuers were examining the remains of the building.
The structure had been displaced by the force of the flood and was surrounded by waterlogged, unstable ground.
As the team moved through the area, they heard a weak voice calling for help.
What followed was a painstaking operation lasting around 45 minutes.
Rescue personnel worked their way through the collapsed structure until they located Shrestha in a confined space beneath the debris.
She was subsequently taken to an army hospital for medical care.
Nepal’s Armed Police Force said the woman was found unconscious on an upper floor that had been buried under the debris.
A nine-member APF team led by Inspector Suman Kumar BK was involved in the rescue at the house belonging to Anand Shrestha in Bidur Municipality-10.
The timing of the discovery made the rescue particularly striking. Shrestha’s relatives had already entered the customary 11-day period of mourning because they believed there was little possibility of finding her alive.
Instead, rescue workers delivered news that reversed the family’s expectations.
The extraordinary survival unfolded against the backdrop of a disaster that has devastated large parts of the region.
Betrawati, in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, was among the places hit hardest on August 26, when an immense flow of water, ice, mud and rocks surged through mountain valleys.
The flood transformed residential and commercial areas into fields of rubble. Roads and bridges were destroyed, while homes and other infrastructure were swept away or buried.
Buildings several storeys high were reduced to debris, leaving rescuers with the difficult task of searching barely recognisable structures.
In parts of Betrawati, deposits left behind by the flood hardened into thick layers around buildings.
The town’s market was almost entirely covered, further complicating efforts to determine whether anyone remained trapped beneath the wreckage.
The grim scale of the operation was evident in the discovery of 24 bodies from a market-area building five days before Shrestha was found.
According to Darnal, the bodies were in a decomposed condition. The building had contained a small shop before the disaster.
Yet rescue teams continued looking for life rather than limiting their efforts to recovery operations.
Workers wearing helmets dug manually through the debris, while others squeezed through gaps in collapsed structures.
Whistles were repeatedly blown, and rescuers stopped to listen for even the faintest response.
Shrestha’s survival was not the only extraordinary rescue recorded after the floods.
Along the Trishuli River, search teams also reached people trapped inside hydropower tunnels.
Two Nepali workers — mechanical foreman Sanjay Sah, 30, and mechanical supervisor Kabir Maharjan, 45 — were brought out alive from the Upper Trishuli 3A tunnel after spending nine days underground.
A Chinese national was also rescued alive from deep inside a hydropower tunnel. The successful recoveries have offered a measure of hope as teams continue searching areas where people may still be trapped.
Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha captured that determination with a simple message: “As long as there is breath, there is hope!”

नेपाल में विनाशकारी बाढ़ के बाद मलबे के बीच तलाश कर रहे बचावकर्मियों को जब एक धीमी आवाज सुनाई दी, तो उन्हें अंदाजा भी नहीं था कि उसके पीछे 11 दिनों से जिंदगी की जंग लड़ रही एक महिला होगी।
आवाज मलबे के नीचे से आ रही थी। राहत दल ने जब वहां खुदाई शुरू की तो 64 वर्षीय चंडिका कुमारी श्रेष्ठ जीवित मिलीं। वह उसी चार मंजिला मकान के ध्वस्त हिस्से में फंसी थीं, जिसे बाढ़ अपने साथ बहाकर ले गई थी।
सबसे भावुक पहलू यह था कि श्रेष्ठ के परिजन उनकी मौत मान चुके थे।
महिला के लापता होने के बाद परिवार ने पारंपरिक 11 दिन का शोक मनाना शुरू कर दिया था। इसी अवधि के अंतिम दिन बचाव कर्मियों को उनके जीवित होने का पता चला।
पुलिस अधिकारी महेंद्र दर्नाल के नेतृत्व में चल रही तलाश के दौरान यह अहम सुराग मिला।
बचावकर्मी बाढ़ से तबाह इमारत के आसपास के हिस्सों की जांच कर रहे थे। मकान बाढ़ के तेज बहाव में अपनी जगह से बह गया था और उसके चारों ओर पानी से भरी अस्थिर जमीन और मलबा जमा था।
अचानक टीम को मदद के लिए पुकार सुनाई दी। इसके बाद बचाव अभियान को उसी स्थान पर केंद्रित किया गया।
लगभग 45 मिनट तक मलबा हटाने के बाद टीम एक ऐसे छोटे हिस्से तक पहुंची जहां श्रेष्ठ फंसी हुई थीं। उन्हें बाहर निकालकर सेना के अस्पताल पहुंचाया गया।
नेपाल के सशस्त्र पुलिस बल ने बताया कि श्रेष्ठ मकान के ऊपरी हिस्से में मलबे के नीचे बेहोशी की हालत में मिलीं।
अभियान में नौ सदस्यीय एपीएफ टीम शामिल थी, जिसकी अगुवाई इंस्पेक्टर सुमन कुमार बीके ने की। कार्रवाई बिदुर नगरपालिका-10 में आनंद श्रेष्ठ के मकान पर की गई।
जिस इलाके में यह बचाव हुआ, वहां बाढ़ की तबाही का अंदाजा लगाना भी मुश्किल था। रासुवा जिले का बेत्रावती 26 अगस्त को पानी, बर्फ, कीचड़ और चट्टानों के बेहद शक्तिशाली प्रवाह की चपेट में आया था।
पहाड़ी घाटियों से आई इस विनाशकारी धारा ने रास्ते में आने वाले घरों और बुनियादी ढांचे को भारी नुकसान पहुंचाया।
कई बहुमंजिला इमारतें देखते ही देखते मलबे में बदल गईं। सड़कें और पुल टूट गए, जबकि बड़ी संख्या में मकान और दूसरी संरचनाएं बाढ़ की चपेट में आ गईं। कुछ इलाकों में कीचड़ और अन्य सामग्री की इतनी मोटी परत जम गई कि वह बाद में कंक्रीट जैसी सख्त हो गई।
बेत्रावती का बाजार भी लगभग पूरी तरह दब गया। बचावकर्मियों के लिए सबसे बड़ी चुनौती यह पता लगाना था कि मलबे के नीचे कोई व्यक्ति अब भी जिंदा तो नहीं है।
श्रेष्ठ के मिलने से पांच दिन पहले बाजार क्षेत्र की एक इमारत से 24 शव बरामद किए गए थे। पुलिस अधिकारी दर्नाल के मुताबिक, शव सड़ी हुई अवस्था में मिले थे।
उस इमारत में पहले एक छोटी दुकान संचालित होती थी।
इसके बावजूद तलाशी अभियान जारी रहा। हेलमेट पहने बचावकर्मी फावड़ों से मलबा हटाते रहे।
कुछ कर्मचारी ढही हुई इमारतों के बीच बने बेहद संकरे रास्तों से अंदर पहुंचे। कई जगहों पर सीटी बजाकर फिर पूरी शांति में किसी आवाज या हलचल का इंतजार किया गया।
बाढ़ के बाद जीवित बचाए गए लोगों में श्रेष्ठ अकेली नहीं हैं।
त्रिशूली नदी के आसपास हाइड्रोपावर सुरंगों में फंसे लोगों को भी बचाव दलों ने कई दिनों बाद बाहर निकाला।
अपर त्रिशूली 3ए सुरंग से 30 वर्षीय मैकेनिकल फोरमैन संजय साह और 45 वर्षीय मैकेनिकल सुपरवाइजर कबीर महार्जन को नौ दिन बाद सुरक्षित निकाला गया।
एक चीनी नागरिक को भी हाइड्रोपावर सुरंग की गहराई से जिंदा बाहर निकालने में बचावकर्मियों को सफलता मिली।
लगातार बढ़ती तबाही और लापता लोगों के बीच इन बचाव अभियानों ने उम्मीद की एक किरण कायम रखी है। ऊर्जा मंत्री बिराज भक्त श्रेष्ठ ने इसी भावना को शब्द देते हुए कहा, “जब तक सांस है, तब तक उम्मीद है!”
