Pakistan plans to challenge the Supreme Court’s order sending Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital as the jailed former prime minister meets his wife and sister after months.
Adiala Jail/Islamabad: A Supreme Court order directing medical treatment for former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan has set the stage for another confrontation between the government and the opposition leader’s supporters, with the Shehbaz Sharif administration preparing to seek a change in the ruling.
The dispute centres on the Supreme Court’s direction that Khan, who is lodged in Adiala Jail, be taken to Islamabad’s Shifa International Hospital within 48 hours and kept there for treatment until September 16, according to his spokesperson Naeem Haider Panjutha.
The government has objected to the decision to send the former prime minister to a private hospital.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the authorities were examining the ruling and intended to approach the court for a review or modification.
The government’s position is that a convicted prisoner should ordinarily receive treatment either inside the prison system or at a state-run hospital.
Tarar said the administration believed the court order needed reconsideration under the applicable law.
The court’s intervention follows mounting concern from Khan’s family and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party over his health.
Khan’s lawyers had earlier raised concerns about a significant deterioration in vision in his right eye, while his son had also publicly expressed alarm over his overall physical condition.
PTI welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision but argued that the medical issue should have been addressed much earlier.
Party spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari said Khan should remain under hospital care until doctors are satisfied with his condition.
Amid the debate over his treatment, Khan was reportedly allowed to receive family members at Adiala Jail on Tuesday after a prolonged gap.
His sister, Noreen Niazi, and wife, Bushra Bibi, met him separately, according to reports citing prison sources.
The meeting with Niazi reportedly lasted around 15 minutes, while Bushra Bibi spent roughly half an hour with the former prime minister.
Niazi is said to have informed Khan about the Supreme Court’s decision regarding his hospital transfer. She also discussed his health and certain legal matters with him.
The meeting took place after Khan’s sisters — Noreen, Aleema and Uzma — arrived at the Dahgal checkpoint leading towards the prison.
Reports said they were initially stopped by police, after which Noreen alone was allowed to proceed for the meeting.
The visit was significant because it was reportedly Khan’s first meeting this year with his wife and sister after around nine months without such access.
Khan, 73, has remained behind bars since August 2023 following convictions in a number of cases.
He has repeatedly alleged that the cases were politically driven and connected to his removal from office in 2022.
His continuing imprisonment has kept Pakistan’s political environment sharply polarised.
The latest controversy over his medical treatment has now added another point of contention between his party, the judiciary and the government.
For Khan’s supporters, the Supreme Court’s order represents an overdue response to concerns about his health.
For the government, the decision has raised legal questions over where a convicted prisoner may be treated.
The case is therefore likely to continue beyond the immediate issue of medical care, with the government’s proposed challenge opening the possibility of another round of litigation over the former prime minister’s custody and treatment.

इस्लामाबाद/रावलपिंडी: पाकिस्तान के पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री इमरान खान की चिकित्सा व्यवस्था को लेकर सुप्रीम कोर्ट के आदेश ने सरकार और विपक्षी पाकिस्तान तहरीक-ए-इंसाफ के बीच एक नया विवाद खड़ा कर दिया है।
शीर्ष अदालत ने खान को इलाज के लिए इस्लामाबाद के शिफा इंटरनेशनल अस्पताल भेजने का निर्देश दिया है, लेकिन प्रधानमंत्री शहबाज शरीफ की सरकार इस फैसले में बदलाव की मांग के लिए अदालत का रुख करने की तैयारी कर रही है।
इमरान खान के प्रवक्ता नईम हैदर पंजूथा के अनुसार, सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने अधिकारियों को 48 घंटे के भीतर खान को अदियाला जेल से अस्पताल स्थानांतरित करने का निर्देश दिया है।
अदालत ने उन्हें 16 सितंबर तक अस्पताल में रखकर उपचार कराने की बात भी कही है।
सरकार की मुख्य आपत्ति निजी अस्पताल में उपचार को लेकर है।
कानून मंत्री आजम नजीर तरार ने कहा कि सरकार ने आदेश के कानूनी पहलुओं पर विचार किया है और अदालत से इसकी समीक्षा या संशोधन की मांग की जाएगी।
सरकार का तर्क है कि कानून के अनुसार दोषी कैदी का उपचार जेल परिसर में उपलब्ध चिकित्सा व्यवस्था के तहत या किसी सरकारी अस्पताल में कराया जाना चाहिए।
इसी आधार पर सरकार सुप्रीम कोर्ट के निर्देश में परिवर्तन चाहती है।
यह मामला इमरान खान की स्वास्थ्य स्थिति को लेकर लंबे समय से जताई जा रही चिंताओं के बीच सामने आया है। उनके परिवार और पीटीआई नेताओं ने कई बार उनके स्वास्थ्य को लेकर सवाल उठाए हैं।
खान के वकीलों ने पहले अदालत में यह भी कहा था कि हिरासत के दौरान उनकी दाहिनी आंख की दृष्टि काफी प्रभावित हुई है।
पिछले वर्ष उनके बेटे ने भी सार्वजनिक रूप से अपने पिता की बिगड़ती सेहत को लेकर चिंता जताई थी।
पीटीआई ने सुप्रीम कोर्ट के आदेश का स्वागत किया है। पार्टी के प्रवक्ता जुल्फिकार बुखारी ने कहा कि पार्टी का मानना है कि इमरान खान को आवश्यक चिकित्सा सहायता पहले मिलनी चाहिए थी।
उन्होंने कहा कि जब तक डॉक्टर उनकी स्थिति से संतुष्ट न हों, तब तक उनका उपचार जारी रहना चाहिए।
इसी बीच, चिकित्सा आदेश के अगले दिन अदियाला जेल में इमरान खान को अपने परिवार के दो सदस्यों से मिलने की अनुमति मिलने की खबर सामने आई।
जेल सूत्रों के अनुसार, खान ने अपनी बहन नoreen नियाज़ी और पत्नी बुशरा बीबी से अलग-अलग मुलाकात की। नoreen के साथ बातचीत लगभग 15 मिनट चली, जबकि बुशरा बीबी के साथ उनकी मुलाकात करीब आधे घंटे तक रही।
बताया गया कि नoreen ने अपने भाई को सुप्रीम कोर्ट के अस्पताल स्थानांतरण संबंधी निर्देश की जानकारी दी। दोनों ने इमरान खान की सेहत और कुछ कानूनी मामलों पर भी चर्चा की।
यह मुलाकात इसलिए महत्वपूर्ण मानी जा रही है क्योंकि रिपोर्टों के अनुसार, करीब नौ महीने बाद खान को पत्नी और बहन से मिलने का अवसर मिला।
यह इस वर्ष परिवार के इन सदस्यों के साथ उनकी पहली मुलाकात बताई जा रही है।
नoreen, अलीमा और उज़मा खान जेल की ओर जाने वाले दहगल चेकपॉइंट तक पहुंची थीं। शुरुआती चरण में पुलिस ने उन्हें आगे जाने से रोक दिया था, लेकिन बाद में केवल नoreen को जेल तक जाने की अनुमति मिली।
73 वर्षीय इमरान खान अगस्त 2023 से जेल में हैं और विभिन्न मामलों में दोषसिद्धि के बाद हिरासत में बने हुए हैं।
हालांकि, वह लगातार कहते रहे हैं कि उनके खिलाफ दर्ज मामले 2022 में सत्ता से हटाए जाने के बाद राजनीतिक उद्देश्य से आगे बढ़ाए गए।
अब उनकी स्वास्थ्य स्थिति से जुड़ा मामला एक नए कानूनी और राजनीतिक टकराव का रूप ले रहा है। एक ओर सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने उनके उपचार के लिए निजी अस्पताल में स्थानांतरण का निर्देश दिया है, दूसरी ओर सरकार इसे कानून के दायरे से बाहर मानते हुए फैसले में संशोधन की मांग कर रही है।
इस विवाद का अगला चरण अदालत में तय होगा।
लेकिन फिलहाल, इमरान खान के स्वास्थ्य, उनकी हिरासत और उन्हें मिलने वाली चिकित्सा सुविधाओं का प्रश्न पाकिस्तान की राजनीति में एक बार फिर प्रमुख मुद्दा बन गया है।
