PM Modi and Xi Jinping Hold Key Bilateral Talks at BRICS Summit, Focus on Trade, Border Stability and Counterterrorism
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a crucial bilateral meeting during the BRICS Summit in Tianjin, where both leaders agreed to intensify efforts to maintain peace along the border and enhance overall ties between India and China.
The high-level meeting between the two leaders lasted for nearly 50 minutes. During the discussions, both sides acknowledged the importance of stable India-China relations for regional peace, global trade and economic growth.
The leaders also agreed that mutual trust, dialogue and cooperation should remain the foundation for resolving long-standing issues.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the two countries decided to work towards reducing trade imbalances and expanding economic cooperation across different sectors.
Discussions also focused on increasing coordination in trade and investment while ensuring fair and balanced commercial relations between the two nations.
Prime Minister Modi stressed the need for continued efforts to maintain peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
He emphasised that border harmony remains essential for building stronger bilateral relations and restoring confidence between the two neighbouring countries.
President Xi Jinping reportedly said that both countries should move beyond differences and work together with a broader vision for the future.
He underlined the need to strengthen communication and deepen cooperation in areas of shared interest.
This meeting is being seen as particularly significant because it comes at a time when global trade uncertainties and geopolitical tensions continue to impact international relations.
Analysts believe the talks could help improve diplomatic engagement between India and China after a prolonged period of strain in ties.
The leaders also exchanged views on global economic challenges and the role emerging economies can play in ensuring stability in international markets.
Both countries reiterated their commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation through platforms like BRICS.
Another major point of discussion was terrorism and regional security.
Prime Minister Modi strongly highlighted the need for united global action against terrorism and appreciated China’s support in addressing security concerns.
Both sides agreed that terrorism and extremism pose serious threats to international peace and stability.
The meeting also reflected an effort by both nations to gradually rebuild diplomatic momentum and create space for constructive engagement despite ongoing challenges.
Prime Minister Modi also invited President Xi Jinping to attend the BRICS Summit scheduled to be hosted by India in 2026.
The invitation was accepted positively, signalling a willingness on both sides to continue diplomatic dialogue at the highest level.
The talks between the two leaders are being viewed as an important step towards stabilising relations and strengthening cooperation between Asia’s two largest economies in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
