PM Modi, Anthony Albanese Strengthen India-Australia Sports Partnership at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Back 2036 Olympic Dream
Sport emerged as a major pillar of the India-Australia partnership as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese jointly visited the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday, marking the final engagement of the Indian leader’s three-day Australia tour.
The visit highlighted the growing sporting relationship between the two nations and underscored their shared commitment to expanding cooperation in sports, youth development and international sporting events.
During his interaction at the historic stadium, Prime Minister Modi reflected on the strong emotional connection that cricket has created between Indians and Australians.
Expressing happiness at watching young cricketers in action, he described the MCG as a symbol of sporting excellence and friendship between the two countries.
One of the most memorable moments of the visit came when Prime Minister Modi presented former Australian captain Steve Waugh with a photograph taken nearly two decades ago.
The picture captured their meeting when Modi was serving as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, making the gift a nostalgic reminder of a long-standing association.
Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said both India and Australia are preparing to host several prestigious international sporting events over the coming years.
He noted that this presents an ideal opportunity to deepen collaboration in sports infrastructure, youth exchanges, athlete development and sporting innovation.
A major announcement during the visit was that the opening match of the 2026-27 Big Bash League season will be played in India.
Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium has been selected to host the historic curtain-raiser in December, making it the first BBL match ever scheduled outside Australia.
The announcement was made jointly by Prime Minister Albanese and Prime Minister Modi.
Cricket Australia later confirmed that the Melbourne Renegades will take on the Perth Scorchers on December 12 in Chennai, describing it as a landmark moment for the league’s global expansion.
Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Modi said hosting major sporting competitions in India guarantees enormous public interest, wider television audiences and unmatched global visibility, making the country an attractive destination for international sporting events.
Highlighting India’s long-term sporting ambitions, Modi reiterated that the country will organise the 2030 Commonwealth Games while actively pursuing the opportunity to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
He said India’s growing sporting ecosystem and infrastructure make it well-positioned to stage global competitions of the highest standard.
Welcoming his Indian counterpart to the MCG, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recalled the extraordinary popularity of the India-Australia cricket rivalry.
Referring to the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he pointed out that the fourth Test attracted around 370,000 spectators over five days, breaking an attendance record that had stood for nearly nine decades.
Albanese also paid tribute to Australian cricket icons Lisa Sthalekar and Steve Waugh, noting that both continue to enjoy immense admiration among Indian cricket fans.
Their contribution, he said, reflects the deep sporting bonds shared by the two countries.
Looking ahead, the Australian Prime Minister said the next decade offers exceptional opportunities for bilateral cooperation in sports.
With India preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, Australia set to stage the 2032 Olympic Games and India pursuing the 2036 Olympics, both countries can significantly strengthen collaboration while continuing their celebrated sporting rivalry.
As part of the visit, the two Prime Ministers also toured the Shane Warne Stand at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, honouring one of Australia’s greatest cricket legends.
The leaders jointly unveiled the Roadmap on Sport Cooperation, a comprehensive framework designed to expand India-Australia collaboration across the sporting sector.
The initiative seeks to combine Australia’s expertise in organising world-class sporting events with India’s rapidly growing sports ecosystem while opening fresh opportunities in tourism, trade and investment.
The roadmap also outlines cooperation in sports science, technology-driven research, athlete training, institutional capacity building and industry partnerships, laying the foundation for a stronger long-term sporting alliance between India and Australia.

दौरे के दौरान सबसे महत्वपूर्ण घोषणाओं में यह भी शामिल रही कि बिग बैश लीग 2026-27 सत्र का उद्घाटन मुकाबला भारत में आयोजित किया जाएगा। दिसंबर में चेन्नई के एम. ए. चिदंबरम स्टेडियम में होने वाला यह मुकाबला ऑस्ट्रेलिया के बाहर खेला जाने वाला बिग बैश लीग का पहला मैच होगा।

अपने भारतीय समकक्ष का स्वागत करते हुए प्रधानमंत्री एंथनी अल्बनीज़ ने भारत-ऑस्ट्रेलिया क्रिकेट प्रतिद्वंद्विता को दुनिया की सबसे लोकप्रिय खेल प्रतिस्पर्धाओं में से एक बताया। उन्होंने 2024-25 बॉर्डर-गावस्कर ट्रॉफी का उल्लेख करते हुए कहा कि चौथे टेस्ट मैच के दौरान पांच दिनों में लगभग 3.70 लाख दर्शक एमसीजी पहुंचे, जिससे करीब 90 वर्ष पुराना उपस्थिति रिकॉर्ड टूट गया।
अल्बनीज़ ने ऑस्ट्रेलिया की दिग्गज क्रिकेटर लिसा स्थालेकर और पूर्व कप्तान स्टीव वॉ की भी सराहना की। उन्होंने कहा कि दोनों खिलाड़ियों को भारत में भी उतना ही सम्मान और प्रेम मिलता है, जितना ऑस्ट्रेलिया में।

यात्रा के दौरान दोनों प्रधानमंत्रियों ने मेलबर्न क्रिकेट ग्राउंड स्थित महान स्पिनर शेन वॉर्न स्टैंड का भी दौरा किया और ऑस्ट्रेलियाई क्रिकेट के इस महान खिलाड़ी को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित की।
दोनों नेताओं ने संयुक्त रूप से ‘रोडमैप ऑन स्पोर्ट कोऑपरेशन’ का भी अनावरण किया। इस व्यापक पहल का उद्देश्य खेल क्षेत्र में भारत और ऑस्ट्रेलिया के बीच दीर्घकालिक सहयोग को नई गति देना है। इसके माध्यम से ऑस्ट्रेलिया के बड़े खेल आयोजनों के अनुभव और भारत की तेजी से बढ़ती खेल क्षमता को एक साझा मंच पर लाया जाएगा, जिससे व्यापार, पर्यटन और निवेश के नए अवसर भी विकसित होंगे।
इस रोडमैप में खेल विज्ञान, आधुनिक तकनीक आधारित अनुसंधान, खिलाड़ियों के प्रशिक्षण, संस्थागत क्षमता निर्माण तथा खेल उद्योग में निवेश और साझेदारी जैसे महत्वपूर्ण क्षेत्रों में सहयोग को बढ़ावा देने की विस्तृत रूपरेखा तैयार की गई है।
