PM Modi’s Italy Visit Deepens Strategic Ties as ‘Melodi’ Moment Goes Viral; Rahul Gandhi Targets PM Over Economic Concerns
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial military honour in Rome during his official visit to Italy, where he was warmly welcomed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The visit marked another important step in the growing partnership between India and Italy, with both leaders highlighting stronger cooperation across strategic sectors.
Addressing a joint press interaction, Meloni said India-Italy relations had entered a “new and decisive phase,” noting that bilateral ties had evolved from a cordial friendship into a special strategic partnership anchored in democratic values, freedom and a shared vision for the future.
Soon after PM Modi arrived in Rome, Meloni shared a cheerful selfie with him on social media, captioning it, “Welcome to Rome, my friend!”
The photograph, clicked with the iconic Colosseum in the background, quickly spread across social media platforms and revived the popular “Melodi” trend — a nickname created by combining the surnames of Meloni and Modi.
The now-viral “Melodi” moment gained even more attention after Meloni shared a light-hearted video in which PM Modi gifted her a packet of Parle Melody toffees.
Social media users flooded platforms with memes and reactions, recalling earlier interactions between the two leaders during the 2024 G7 Summit and the COP28 summit in Dubai, where their friendly exchanges had also attracted widespread attention.
PM Modi later shared photographs from his evening with Meloni, revealing that the two leaders held extensive discussions over dinner before visiting the Colosseum together.
He said they exchanged views on several important global and bilateral issues and expressed optimism about strengthening India-Italy relations further through formal talks scheduled during the visit.
During his stay in Rome, PM Modi also met Italian President Sergio Mattarella for delegation-level discussions focused on trade, investment, technology, clean energy, artificial intelligence, cultural cooperation and emerging sectors such as critical minerals, nuclear energy and space collaboration.
Sharing details of the meeting, PM Modi said India and Italy discussed ways to deepen cooperation in futuristic sectors while also expanding cultural and economic engagement.
The Ministry of External Affairs later confirmed that both sides exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest and reaffirmed their commitment to a stronger long-term partnership.
In a joint opinion piece released during the visit, Modi and Meloni wrote that the India-Italy partnership was entering a stronger and more mature phase amid rapidly changing global circumstances.
The two leaders underlined that sustained high-level dialogue had transformed bilateral relations into a deeper strategic alliance built on shared democratic principles.

PM Modi’s Italy visit also highlighted the growing cultural connection between the two countries. Members of the Indian diaspora welcomed him enthusiastically in Rome with traditional performances and cultural presentations.
Italian artists performed Indian classical dance forms including Kathak, Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam, while musicians played instruments such as the Santoor, Tabla, Sitar and Bansuri in tribute to India’s rich musical heritage.
The Prime Minister praised the efforts of Italian artists and musicians who have embraced Indian culture.
He also interacted with members of the Indian community and signed autographs for children who presented him with artworks and portraits during the reception.

Among the notable interactions during the visit was PM Modi’s meeting with Italian artist Giampaolo Tomassetti, who gifted him a painting inspired by Varanasi.
Modi appreciated the artist’s decades-long connection with Indian culture and his extensive work based on the Mahabharata and Vedic traditions.
Italy marked the final destination of PM Modi’s five-nation diplomatic tour, which also included visits to Norway, the UAE, the Netherlands and Sweden.
The broader tour focused on expanding India’s global partnerships in areas including trade, technology, investment, energy and defence cooperation.
Opposition Criticism Over Italy Visit
While the visit generated significant diplomatic and social media attention, it also triggered sharp political criticism from the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party.
Rahul Gandhi questioned PM Modi’s foreign visit at a time when, according to him, the country was facing economic challenges.
Referring to the viral Melody toffee video, Gandhi accused the Prime Minister of prioritising optics and publicity over pressing domestic concerns affecting farmers, youth, labourers and small traders.
In a social media post and during a party workers’ conference, Rahul Gandhi alleged that an “economic storm” was looming over the country while the Prime Minister was “busy making reels and distributing candies abroad.”
He also launched a strong attack on the BJP, RSS and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing them of undermining the Constitution and serving the interests of select industrialists.
The BJP strongly reacted to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks, calling them irresponsible and “anarchic.” Senior BJP leaders demanded an apology, stating that Gandhi’s comments insulted the Prime Minister and the people of the country.
