Political Shockwaves or Rumour Mill? Claims of Raghav Chadha Joining Bharatiya Janata Party Stir Speculation Ahead of Punjab Elections
In a development that would send ripples across India’s political landscape—if true—claims have surfaced suggesting that senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha, along with fellow MPs Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal, has decided to merge with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
According to the claims, Chadha, while addressing a press conference, reportedly stated that a two-thirds faction of AAP’s Rajya Sabha members had chosen to invoke constitutional provisions to merge with the BJP.
He further named other MPs—Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Vikram Sahney, and Swati Maliwal—as part of this alleged shift.
If such a move were actually to take place, it would be politically explosive—especially with Punjab elections on the horizon, where the Aam Aadmi Party currently holds power.
A merger backed by two-thirds of MPs could potentially shield defectors from the anti-defection law, making it not just a political statement but a strategic maneuver.
However, it’s important to approach such claims with caution. As of now, there has been no official confirmation from AAP, BJP, or the leaders involved.
In India’s fast-moving political environment, such narratives can sometimes emerge from speculation, internal dissent, or misinformation.
A Rising Political Star with Deep Roots in AAP
At just 37, Raghav Chadha has long been seen as one of AAP’s most prominent young faces.
A chartered accountant by profession and an alumnus of Delhi’s Modern School, Chadha joined hands with Arvind Kejriwal during the final phase of the India Against Corruption movement. From there, his rise within the party was swift.
He became AAP’s national spokesperson, known for his sharp communication style, and was appointed national treasurer at the remarkably young age of 26.
In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, he won from Rajinder Nagar and later took on the role of vice-chairman of the Delhi Jal Board. By 2022, he had secured a seat in the Rajya Sabha.
Yet, in recent months, there had been murmurs about his changing role within the party. His replacement as deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha by Ashok Mittal was officially described as “routine,” but political observers noted the timing.
Controversies and Undercurrents
Ashok Mittal himself has not been untouched by controversy. The founder-chancellor of Lovely Professional University faced Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids at his residence in Jalandhar, reportedly linked to a money-laundering investigation.
Searches were also conducted at properties connected to the university and his family.
These developments added another layer of intrigue to the already evolving political narrative around AAP’s internal dynamics.
The Bigger Picture
Whether this dramatic claim turns out to be true, exaggerated, or entirely unfounded, one thing is certain—it reflects the intense churn within Indian politics, especially ahead of crucial state elections.
Punjab, in particular, remains a high-stakes battleground, and any perceived cracks within AAP could have far-reaching consequences.
For now, this story sits at the intersection of speculation and possibility. Until official statements emerge, it remains a developing situation—one that political watchers across the country will be tracking very closely.
