Saree, Cable and a Desperate Climb: How 21 Tamil Nadu Pilgrims Escaped Nepal Flood Disaster

Trapped near the Nepal-Tibet border, mostly elderly travellers battled mud, falling rocks and treacherous mountain terrain before being airlifted to safety

CHENNAI: For 21 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu, a journey through Nepal turned into a fight for survival when a violent surge of floodwater and debris swept across a mountain road near the Nepal-Tibet border.

The group, travelling in a three-bus convoy, had only moments to react after the road around them began collapsing under a torrent of water, mud and boulders.

Their escape ultimately involved scrambling up a steep, slippery slope and using a saree as an improvised lifeline.

The survivors, many of them aged over 50, reached Chennai from Kathmandu late Friday after being evacuated from the disaster zone.

Several said the experience left them feeling as though they had been given a second life.

A repair stop may have saved them

The pilgrims were part of a 57-member group travelling in three buses arranged by a Kumbakonam-based travel agency. Their vehicle was second in the convoy and had stopped temporarily because it was stuck in mud.

That delay proved crucial.

According to survivors, a deafening sound suddenly came from the direction of the road, followed by rocks crashing down and a wall of floodwater rushing towards the vehicles.

Navu Kabirdas, who was travelling with his wife Vijaya Bhuvaneswari, said the force of the water appeared comparable to a dam suddenly breaking open.

The bus behind them began to tilt, prompting the Nepalese driver to abandon the vehicle and order passengers to move uphill.

The travellers followed, leaving behind their belongings as they searched for higher ground.

A saree becomes a rescue rope

The immediate challenge was getting up a muddy embankment roughly the height of a single-storey building.

The slope offered little grip, and passengers repeatedly slipped while attempting to climb.

One member of the group, Poongodi, had already made it to the top. She removed her saree and lowered it towards those still below.

The survivors combined the saree with an existing cable to pull themselves upward. One woman struggled to make the climb even with assistance.

The group tied the saree around her waist and collectively hauled her to safety.

For the pilgrims, the improvised rescue line became the difference between remaining trapped and reaching higher ground.

‘It looked like a tsunami’

Sathya, a headmistress at a Panchayat Union school in Kanchipuram district, recalled that the group had departed Syabrubesi at around 8 am, intending to proceed towards Chinese immigration.

As the disaster unfolded, what initially appeared to be dust rapidly transformed into a wall of mud and rocks moving towards the road.

She estimated the debris surge at nearly 70 to 80 feet in height, describing it as something she had previously seen only in films.

The passengers escaped from the driver’s side of the bus, with water and mud already covering their lower legs.

Reaching the mountainside was itself perilous because the surface repeatedly gave way beneath their feet.

The group eventually reached an Armed Police Force camp, where they were provided with water and biscuits.

Those who managed to obtain a mobile signal sent a photograph back to Tamil Nadu to reassure relatives that they were alive.

During the escape, the pilgrims also spotted a man trapped in mud and called the attention of rescuers to him. He was subsequently pulled to safety, according to Bhuvaneswari.

Three-hour trek before helicopter evacuation

Their ordeal did not end at the security camp. The next day, the group spent around three hours negotiating thorn-covered terrain and a narrow mountain trail to reach a designated helicopter evacuation point.

At several places, a wrong step could have sent them down the steep mountainside.

Kabirdas recalled that the group briefly took the wrong route before a local Nepalese man helped redirect them.

The pilgrims eventually reached the evacuation zone and were taken out by a military helicopter.

From there, they travelled via Kathmandu and New Delhi before finally arriving in Chennai.

Some members of the group lost passports and other personal documents during the disaster.

Many travellers still unaccounted for

The rescue of the 21 pilgrims has brought relief to their families, but uncertainty remains over others who were part of the wider travel groups.

Thirty-six people from the original 57-member contingent could not be contacted as of Saturday.

A separate group of 49 pilgrims from Chennai also remained untraceable.

They had reportedly been inside the Gyirong Port immigration building on the Chinese side shortly before the flood struck on Wednesday.

Tamil Nadu Minister A Rajmohan said more than 400 people from the state had travelled to Nepal and that 90 were still unreachable.

Officials had yet to clarify how that broader figure corresponded with the 85 people reported missing from the two identified groups.

The state government has deployed Ministers Aadhav Arjuna, Rajmohan, K Thennarasu and R Vinoth in New Delhi to coordinate with agencies involved in the rescue effort.

Authorities are continuing attempts to establish contact with those still missing and to help survivors deal with the loss of passports and other essential documents.

For the 21 who made it home, however, the memory of the journey remains stark: a bus engulfed by floodwater, a mountain slope offering almost no foothold, and a simple saree turned into a rope that helped pull an entire group towards safety.

चेन्नई: नेपाल में तीर्थयात्रा पर गए तमिलनाडु के 21 लोगों के लिए पहाड़ों की यात्रा अचानक जिंदगी और मौत के बीच संघर्ष में बदल गई। नेपाल-तिब्बत सीमा के करीब सड़क पर अचानक पानी, कीचड़ और बड़े-बड़े पत्थरों का सैलाब आने के बाद यात्रियों को बस छोड़कर पहाड़ की ओर भागना पड़ा।

तीन बसों में चल रहे इस दल में ज्यादातर यात्री उम्रदराज थे। नीचे बहते मलबे और ऊपर चढ़ने की मुश्किल के बीच उन्हें सुरक्षित ऊंचाई तक पहुंचने के लिए बेहद जोखिम भरा रास्ता तय करना पड़ा।

इस दौरान समूह की एक महिला ने अपनी साड़ी उतारकर उसे नीचे फंसे यात्रियों तक पहुंचाया। इसी साड़ी और वहां मौजूद एक केबल की मदद से कई लोगों ने फिसलन भरी ढलान पार की।

शुक्रवार देर रात ये 21 यात्री काठमांडू के रास्ते चेन्नई पहुंचे। चेन्नई लौटे यात्रियों ने अपने अनुभव को जिंदगी का दूसरा मौका बताया।

कुछ मिनट की देरी ने बदली पूरी कहानी

यह समूह कुल 57 यात्रियों का हिस्सा था, जिन्हें कुंभकोणम की एक ट्रैवल एजेंसी ने तीन बसों में नेपाल भेजा था। बाढ़ से पहले उनकी बस कीचड़ में फंस गई थी और मरम्मत के लिए कुछ समय के लिए रुकना पड़ा।

यात्रियों के मुताबिक, इसी दौरान अचानक तेज आवाज सुनाई दी। इसके तुरंत बाद पहाड़ी से पत्थर गिरने लगे और तेज पानी तथा मलबा सड़क की ओर बढ़ने लगे।

नवु कबीरदास और उनकी पत्नी विजया भुवनेश्वरी भी इसी बस में थे। कबीरदास ने बताया कि कुछ ही क्षणों में हालात ऐसे हो गए जैसे किसी बांध का पानी अचानक छोड़ दिया गया हो।

पीछे चल रही बस भी एक तरफ झुकने लगी। खतरा भांपकर नेपाली चालक ने यात्रियों को वाहन से निकलकर ऊपर की ओर भागने के लिए कहा और खुद भी बस छोड़ दी।

इसके बाद सभी यात्रियों ने सामान और दूसरी चीजों की परवाह किए बिना ऊंचाई की ओर दौड़ लगाई।

एक साड़ी बनी सहारा

सबसे बड़ी चुनौती बस से निकलने के बाद शुरू हुई। यात्रियों को कीचड़ से भरी लगभग एक मंजिल ऊंची ढलान पर चढ़ना था। पैर टिकते नहीं थे और बार-बार लोग नीचे खिसक जा रहे थे।

समूह की सदस्य पूंगोडी किसी तरह ऊपर पहुँच गई थीं। उन्होंने अपनी साड़ी उतारी और उसे नीचे मौजूद यात्रियों की ओर लटका दिया।

नीचे मौजूद लोगों ने साड़ी के साथ वहां लगी एक केबल को पकड़ लिया और धीरे-धीरे ऊपर खिसकने लगे। समूह की एक महिला इतनी मुश्किल में थी कि वह अकेले ऊपर नहीं आ पा रही थी। यात्रियों ने साड़ी को उसकी कमर से बांधा और बाकी लोगों ने मिलकर उसे ऊपर खींच लिया।

इस असाधारण प्रयास ने पूरे समूह को ऊंचाई तक पहुंचने में मदद की।

‘ऐसा लगा जैसे सुनामी आ गई हो’

कांचीपुरम जिले के पंचायत यूनियन स्कूल की प्रधानाध्यापिका सत्य ने बताया कि तीर्थयात्री सुबह करीब आठ बजे स्याब्रुबेसी से चीनी इमिग्रेशन की ओर निकले थे।

पहाड़ की तरफ से उठता मलबा पहले उन्हें धूल के बादल जैसा दिखाई दिया। कुछ ही पलों में वही मलबा पत्थरों और पानी की विशाल लहर में बदल गया।

सत्य के अनुसार, मलबे की लहर करीब 70 से 80 फीट ऊंची दिखाई दे रही थी। उन्होंने कहा कि ऐसा दृश्य उन्होंने पहले केवल अंग्रेजी फिल्मों में देखा था।

बस से निकलने तक कीचड़ यात्रियों के टखनों से ऊपर पहुंच चुका था। पहाड़ पर चढ़ने का कोई स्पष्ट रास्ता नहीं था। थोड़ी ऊंचाई चढ़ते ही पैर फिसल जाते और यात्री फिर नीचे खिसक जाते।

किसी तरह वे सशस्त्र पुलिस बल के एक कैंप तक पहुंचे, जहां उन्हें पानी और बिस्कुट दिए गए।

जिन लोगों के मोबाइल में कुछ समय के लिए नेटवर्क मिला, उन्होंने तमिलनाडु में अपने परिवारों को अपनी तस्वीर भेजकर सुरक्षित होने की जानकारी दी।

इस दौरान यात्रियों ने एक व्यक्ति को कीचड़ में फँसा और मदद के लिए हाथ हिलाते देखा। उन्होंने बचाव कर्मियों को इसकी जानकारी दी, जिसके बाद उस व्यक्ति को भी सुरक्षित निकाल लिया गया।

हेलीकॉप्टर तक पहुंचने के लिए तीन घंटे पैदल चले

कैंप तक पहुंचना उनकी मुसीबत का अंत नहीं था। अगले दिन यात्रियों को करीब तीन घंटे तक कांटेदार झाड़ियों और बेहद संकरे पहाड़ी रास्ते से गुजरना पड़ा ताकि वे हेलीकॉप्टर से निकाले जाने वाले स्थान तक पहुंच सकें।

कई जगहों पर रास्ते के एक तरफ गहरी खाई थी। जरा सी चूक गंभीर हादसे में बदल सकती थी। कबीरदास के मुताबिक, समूह एक बार गलत दिशा में चला गया था। तभी एक नेपाली व्यक्ति ने उन्हें सही रास्ता बताया।

रास्ता बदलने के लिए यात्रियों को पहले नीचे उतरना पड़ा और फिर दूसरी दिशा में ऊपर चढ़ना पड़ा। उन्होंने बताया कि नीचे उतरना कई जगहों पर ऊपर चढ़ने से भी ज्यादा कठिन था।

आखिरकार सैन्य हेलीकॉप्टर से सभी 21 यात्रियों को सुरक्षित बाहर निकाला गया। इसके बाद वे काठमांडू और नई दिल्ली होते हुए चेन्नई पहुंचे। इस दौरान कुछ यात्रियों के पासपोर्ट और अन्य जरूरी दस्तावेज भी खो गए।

85 से ज्यादा यात्रियों की तलाश जारी

21 लोगों की सुरक्षित वापसी से उनके परिवारों ने राहत की सांस ली है, लेकिन इसी यात्रा से जुड़े कई अन्य लोगों को लेकर अब भी चिंता बनी हुई है।

57 सदस्यीय दल में से 36 यात्रियों से शनिवार तक संपर्क नहीं हो पाया था।

इसके अलावा चेन्नई से गए 49 यात्रियों का एक अलग समूह भी लापता बताया गया। बाढ़ आने से कुछ समय पहले इन यात्रियों के चीन की ओर स्थित ग्यिरोंग पोर्ट के इमिग्रेशन भवन में होने की जानकारी मिली थी।

तमिलनाडु के मंत्री ए राजमोहन के अनुसार, राज्य से 400 से अधिक लोग नेपाल गए थे और इनमें से 90 लोगों से संपर्क नहीं हो पा रहा था।

हालांकि, अधिकारियों ने अभी यह स्पष्ट नहीं किया है कि राज्य स्तर पर बताए गए 90 लापता लोगों का आंकड़ा दोनों चिन्हित समूहों के 85 यात्रियों से किस तरह मेल खाता है।

मुख्यमंत्री सी जोसेफ विजय के निर्देश पर मंत्री आधव अर्जुन, राजमोहन, के थन्नारसु और आर विनोद नई दिल्ली में रहकर बचाव एवं समन्वय अभियान पर नजर रख रहे हैं।

सरकार का कहना है कि लापता लोगों की स्थिति का पता लगाने और दस्तावेज खो चुके यात्रियों की मदद के प्रयास जारी हैं।

चेन्नई लौटे 21 यात्रियों के लिए यह सफर अब एक भयावह याद है—तेज पानी में घिरती बस, फिसलता हुआ पहाड़ और मौत के बीच जीवन का सहारा बनी एक साधारण साड़ी।
