Regional Tensions Escalate as Iraqi Militias Warn of Retaliation Following US-Saudi Strikes

Fresh concerns over a wider conflict in West Asia intensified after the Associated Press, citing two Iraqi militia officials, reported that at least six Iranian military advisers were killed during joint US-Saudi airstrikes carried out in Iraq on Wednesday.

The reported deaths have further heightened tensions in an already volatile region.

According to reports, the confrontation now extends across multiple theatres, including US military installations in the Gulf, Iranian territory and Iraq.

The latest developments have fuelled fears that the region could once again slide into a broader military confrontation involving several countries.

The ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran has also continued to weigh heavily on the global economy.

Analysts say prolonged instability around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy corridors, has disrupted maritime movement and added uncertainty to international energy markets.

Military experts have also raised concerns that sustained operations in the region could put additional pressure on American defence resources.

Reports suggest that continued deployments and repeated military engagements may further strain US ammunition stockpiles needed to protect its personnel and allied forces stationed across West Asia.

The New York Times, quoting a statement issued by Iran-aligned Iraqi militias, reported that the groups have vowed to respond to the recent US-Saudi strikes.

However, they said any retaliation would be deferred until the conclusion of the ongoing Arbaeen pilgrimage on Tuesday, when hundreds of thousands of Shia pilgrims are expected to visit the holy city of Karbala.

The same statement, as quoted by the newspaper, warned that the groups could target what they described as American interests and, if circumstances demanded, assets linked to Saudi Arabia.

The militias also claimed they had given Iraq’s central government until next Tuesday to respond to the recent military action.

According to the report, Baghdad has been attempting to persuade Iran-backed armed factions to disarm and integrate into the country’s formal security structure.

The issue remains one of the most sensitive political and security challenges facing the Iraqi government.

Meanwhile, Iraq’s National Security Council criticised the recent airstrikes during an emergency meeting and announced that a comprehensive security plan had been approved to prevent any armed group from using Iraqi territory to threaten neighbouring countries.

The council also reiterated its opposition to hostile actions by any party, regardless of the reasons cited for carrying them out.

इस दावे के बाद पहले से तनावग्रस्त पश्चिम एशिया में हालात और अधिक गंभीर होते दिखाई दे रहे हैं।

रिपोर्टों के अनुसार मौजूदा टकराव अब कई मोर्चों तक फैल चुका है, जिनमें खाड़ी देशों में स्थित अमेरिकी सैन्य ठिकाने, ईरानी क्षेत्र और इराक शामिल हैं।

इन घटनाक्रमों ने आशंका बढ़ा दी है कि क्षेत्र एक बार फिर व्यापक सैन्य संघर्ष की ओर बढ़ सकता है।

उनका कहना है कि क्षेत्र में तैनात अमेरिकी सैनिकों और सहयोगी देशों की सुरक्षा बनाए रखने के लिए पर्याप्त सैन्य संसाधनों की उपलब्धता महत्वपूर्ण बनी हुई है।

न्यूयॉर्क टाइम्स ने ईरान समर्थक इराकी मिलिशिया के बयान के हवाले से बताया कि समूहों ने हालिया अमेरिका-सऊदी कार्रवाई का जवाब देने की चेतावनी दी है।

हालांकि उन्होंने कहा कि वर्तमान अरबईन यात्रा समाप्त होने तक किसी भी जवाबी कार्रवाई को टाल दिया जाएगा। इस दौरान लाखों शिया श्रद्धालु इराक के पवित्र शहर कर्बला पहुंचते हैं।

अखबार के अनुसार जारी बयान में यह भी कहा गया कि यदि परिस्थितियां बनीं तो अमेरिकी हितों के साथ-साथ सऊदी अरब से जुड़े ठिकानों को भी निशाना बनाया जा सकता है।

मिलिशिया समूहों ने यह दावा भी किया कि उन्होंने इराक की केंद्र सरकार को अगले मंगलवार तक की समय-सीमा दी है ताकि वह हालिया सैन्य कार्रवाई पर अपनी प्रतिक्रिया स्पष्ट करे।

रिपोर्टों के मुताबिक इराक सरकार लंबे समय से ईरान समर्थित सशस्त्र समूहों पर हथियार छोड़कर सरकारी सुरक्षा ढांचे में शामिल होने का दबाव बना रही है। यह मुद्दा देश की आंतरिक सुरक्षा और राजनीतिक स्थिरता के लिए सबसे जटिल चुनौतियों में से एक बना हुआ है।

इस बीच इराक की राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा परिषद ने आपात बैठक में हालिया हवाई हमलों की आलोचना की और कहा कि पड़ोसी देशों की सुरक्षा को प्रभावित करने वाली किसी भी गतिविधि को रोकने के लिए व्यापक सुरक्षा योजना तैयार कर ली गई है।

परिषद ने यह भी दोहराया कि वह किसी भी पक्ष द्वारा की जाने वाली शत्रुतापूर्ण कार्रवाई का विरोध करती है, चाहे उसके पीछे कोई भी तर्क क्यों न दिया जाए।
