Nepal Turns to Mass Burials as Mortuaries Overflow After Deadly Flash Floods
Authorities begin burying unidentified victims as the death toll reaches 752 and nearly 2,500 people remain missing following catastrophic flooding in the Trishuli River basin.
KATHMANDU: Nepal has begun resorting to mass burials for unidentified victims of the country’s devastating flash floods as morgues struggle to cope with the large number of bodies being recovered from downstream areas.
The Ministry of Home Affairs decided on Sunday, a day after 70 unclaimed bodies were buried in Chitwan.
Kathmandu has emerged as a central point for receiving remains recovered from areas affected by the flooding, particularly along the Trishuli River system.
The scale of the recovery operation has placed extraordinary pressure on the country’s limited mortuary facilities.
A doctor at Kathmandu’s Institute of Medicine, one of the government’s principal facilities for handling bodies, said the morgue was operating at more than four times its intended capacity.
DNA samples to be retained
Officials said the decision to conduct mass burials does not mean the remains will become permanently inaccessible to families.
DNA material is being preserved so that unidentified victims can potentially be matched with relatives at a later stage.
A government official said bodies could be exhumed if families subsequently establish a relationship and wish to conduct funeral rites in accordance with their religious or cultural practices.
Chitwan has become the largest recovery point for bodies swept downstream by the floods.
The district, roughly 150 kilometres from the mountainous areas where the Trishuli expands and eventually joins the Narayani, has yielded about 250 bodies so far.
The number of unidentified victims is expected to remain a major challenge for authorities as search teams continue working in areas hit by the disaster.
Floods devastated several districts
The disaster was triggered after a major glacial collapse near Nepal’s border with Tibet unleashed a huge volume of water into the Bhote Koshi system and the Lende Khola, eventually feeding into the Trishuli River.
Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading have been among the worst-affected districts.
The latest official figures put the number of confirmed deaths at 752, while approximately 2,500 people are still unaccounted for.
Many of those missing are believed to have been caught in the sudden surge at remote locations, including sites connected with hydropower projects.
India, China join rescue effort
International assistance has also reached Nepal as the search continues. Rescue personnel from India and China are working alongside Nepali teams, with operations concentrated on difficult-to-access areas in Rasuwa and around Trishuli.
Hydroelectric project sites have received particular attention because a large number of workers were caught in the flooding.
Rescue operations have so far helped evacuate about 400 people from affected locations.
Authorities are continuing both the search for missing people and the recovery of victims as the humanitarian response enters a critical phase.
