Shock, Silence, and Questions: Mumbai Family’s Sudden Death Leaves Community Grieving

Mumbai: A quiet Monday morning in Pydhonie turned into a scene of deep mourning, as relatives, friends, and community members gathered at the Valak Halal Memon Jamat to bid farewell to a family of four whose sudden deaths have left everyone searching for answers.

Inside a small 250 sq ft hall, nearly 80 people sat on carpets—men and women in separate groups—speaking in hushed tones, some in disbelief, others in tears.

The loss felt unreal. Abdullah Dokadia, his wife Naseem, and their two daughters, Ayesha and Zainab, were gone within hours, leaving behind a stunned extended family and a shaken neighbourhood.

Abdullah’s elderly mother, who had travelled from Jogeshwari, could barely hold herself together.

Just days ago, she had spent time with her son’s family, playing with her granddaughters.

One had recently appeared for her SSC exams, the other was still in school. Now, she was grappling with a loss too heavy to process. “I cannot believe they are all gone,” she said, breaking down.

Family members are still trying to piece together what happened that night.

According to Abdullah’s sister-in-law, the evening had been entirely normal. Some family members had gone out for dinner on Saturday night and returned home without any issues.

But later, around 1 to 1:30 am, Abdullah and Naseem cut a watermelon for themselves and their daughters. All four of them ate it.

By early Sunday morning, things took a tragic turn.

“They started vomiting and had severe diarrhoea,” she recalled. “We rushed them to the hospital… but we lost them.”

The suddenness of it all has raised troubling questions.

Abdullah’s cousin, Mohammed Mustafa Iqbal, said the watermelon is the only unusual factor identified so far, but the family is waiting for official confirmation.

“We don’t want to jump to conclusions. We will wait for the postmortem and forensic reports,” he said, adding that the results may take up to 15 days.

He also urged people to avoid spreading rumours. “There is misinformation going around that more people died after eating watermelon. That is not true,” he clarified.

Meanwhile, the police investigation is ongoing. Officers revisited the family’s one-bedroom apartment and spoke to neighbours and relatives as part of a routine inquiry.

Authorities have maintained that the exact cause of death is still unknown and can only be confirmed after detailed forensic analysis.

Officials have reiterated that no definitive cause has been established yet. Initial indications point toward suspected food poisoning, but nothing has been confirmed.

Samples, including food remnants and biological evidence, have been sent for laboratory testing.

Health authorities are also expected to examine whether contamination—chemical or bacterial—could have played a role.

For now, the community is left with grief, unanswered questions, and a haunting sense of how quickly life can change.

What was an ordinary night ended in unimaginable tragedy—one that continues to echo through the narrow lanes of Pydhonie.
