‘God’s Own Country’ Wins Hearts Again: Kerala Man Travels 14 Hours to Return American Tourist’s Lost Debit Card
What began as a stressful travel mishap for an American tourist turned into an unforgettable lesson in human kindness during her solo journey through Kerala.
A simple act of generosity by a resident not only helped her recover a misplaced debit card but also restored her faith in humanity.
In a video that has since gone viral on Instagram, India Witkin, a traveller based in New York, recounted her heartwarming experience while exploring a small coastal town in Kerala.
During her trip, she accidentally left her debit card inside an ATM and did not realise her mistake until she had already reached Thiruvananthapuram, nearly five hours away from the place where she had used the machine.
“I was travelling alone and didn’t realise my debit card was missing until I had reached the capital city, which was around five hours away,” Witkin explained in her video.
Earlier that day, she had visited a DHL office to send a package to the United States and had exchanged phone numbers with one of the employees there.
Before heading onward, she stopped at an ATM to withdraw cash but inadvertently left her card inside the machine.
Witkin candidly admitted that a combination of the region’s intense heat and a lingering hangover from the previous night may have contributed to her absent-mindedness.
A Desperate Search and an Unexpected Miracle
The moment she realised that her card was missing, panic set in. Since she was travelling alone in a foreign country and was about to leave India in a matter of days, the situation seemed overwhelming.
“I immediately called the DHL employee and asked him if he could check whether the card was still there.
I remember praying to every Hindu god and goddess I could think of,” she said with a smile.
Nearly 24 hours later, she received incredible news.
The employee informed her that he had found the card. Astonishingly, it was still sitting on top of the ATM, untouched.
“Finding it felt like a miracle,” she recalled.
A 14-Hour Journey to Help a Stranger
Recovering the card, however, was still not easy. Witkin was scheduled to leave India within the next 36 hours, and since it was a Sunday, courier services were unavailable.
Just when she believed she had exhausted all options, the DHL employee went far beyond what anyone would ordinarily expect.
Later that evening, he called her and asked her to step outside.
To her amazement, the man had travelled nearly six hours in a tuk-tuk, accompanied by two friends, solely to return her debit card in person. The round trip lasted approximately 14 hours, and he made the journey on his day off.
“I couldn’t believe it. He drove all that way just to hand-deliver my card,” she said.
Refusing Payment and Leaving a Lasting Impression
Deeply moved by his extraordinary gesture, Witkin offered to compensate him for his time, effort and travel expenses. However, the man politely declined.
According to Witkin, he told her that he knew she was travelling on a limited budget and suggested that she keep the money for herself.
The man’s name, she revealed, was Krishna.
“He shares his name with the Hindu deity associated with love, compassion and protection. Tell me karma doesn’t exist,” she said.
Reflecting on the experience, Witkin added, “I hope this story restores other people’s faith in humanity because it certainly restored mine.”
Social Media Applauds Kerala’s Generosity
The touching story quickly resonated with social media users, many of whom shared their own experiences of the warmth and honesty of people in Kerala.
One user wrote, “Kerala never disappoints.”
Another commented, “We lived in Kerala for four years, and my father forgot his wallet in autorickshaws three times. Every single time, it was returned to him. More than a decade has passed, and we still talk about the kindness and humility we experienced there.”
A third user remarked, “Thank you for showing the world why Kerala is truly God’s Own Country. We are proud of this gesture and grateful that you shared his story.”
For India Witkin, a misplaced debit card became much more than a travel inconvenience.
It turned into a powerful reminder that acts of compassion often come from strangers and that simple gestures of kindness can leave a lifelong impression.
