Sonam Wangchuk Offers to End Hunger Strike if Government Assures No Action Against NEET Protesters
New Delhi: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Wednesday offered to end his prolonged hunger strike, provided the Central Government gives a clear assurance that no punitive or retaliatory action will be taken against students and protesters who participated in the movement over the alleged NEET paper leak.
In a letter addressed to Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh, Wangchuk said he would appeal to students and demonstrators to suspend their agitation once the government formally guarantees that no participant would face legal harassment or retaliatory measures for taking part in the protests.
Seeking an unequivocal commitment from the Centre, Wangchuk stated that the young protesters had raised their voices only to demand a transparent, fair and accountable examination system and justice for students affected by the alleged NEET paper leak controversy.
He said such democratic participation should not invite punitive consequences.
The activist also expressed gratitude to the two Union ministers for visiting him in hospital and said they had conveyed that the government would give serious consideration to the demands placed before it.
According to Wangchuk, these demands include adequate compensation for the families of students who allegedly died by suicide following the examination controversy.
He has also urged a detailed discussion in Parliament on the issue and accountability at the highest level, including consideration of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation.
Referring to the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march held on July 20, Wangchuk maintained that the protest remained peaceful despite what he described as the excessive use of force by the police.
He appealed to the government to uphold democratic values by ensuring that no criminal cases, harassment or retaliatory measures are initiated against those who participated in the movement.
Wangchuk, who has been observing a hunger strike over the NEET issue, said he would immediately end his fast if the government provides the requested assurance.
He added that such a step would reinforce the belief that the concerns of students and young citizens had been heard with sincerity.
Wednesday marked the 25th day of Wangchuk’s indefinite fast, which has become one of the most prominent symbols of the nationwide campaign seeking accountability in the alleged examination paper leak.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court sought responses from the Central Government and the Delhi Police regarding allegations of excessive force during the protest and scheduled the next hearing for September 11.
The High Court was hearing two petitions seeking the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine allegations that Delhi Police used disproportionate force against demonstrators during the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) march towards Parliament.
Petitioners argued that peaceful protesters were subjected to force without prior warning and urged the court to summon Additional DCP Sandeep Lamba over allegations of assaulting a woman standing near the protest site.
Opposing the petitions, the Delhi Police maintained that the demonstration had ceased to remain peaceful after sections of the crowd allegedly turned violent.
Police informed the court that video evidence showed security personnel sustaining injuries and claimed that some protesters resorted to stone-pelting and violence, making police intervention necessary to restore order.
The controversy stems from Monday’s ‘Sansad Chalo’ march, when thousands of demonstrators led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) assembled at Jantar Mantar demanding accountability in the alleged NEET paper leak case and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
As protesters attempted to move towards Parliament on the opening day of the Monsoon Session, security personnel used tear gas shells and baton charges to disperse the crowd amid heavy security deployment.
सरकार से आश्वासन मिलने पर अनशन समाप्त करेंगे सोनम वांगचुक, बोले- प्रदर्शनकारियों पर न हो कोई कार्रवाई
नई दिल्ली: जलवायु कार्यकर्ता सोनम वांगचुक ने बुधवार को कहा कि यदि केंद्र सरकार यह स्पष्ट आश्वासन देती है कि NEET आंदोलन में शामिल छात्रों और प्रदर्शनकारियों के खिलाफ कोई दंडात्मक या प्रतिशोधात्मक कार्रवाई नहीं की जाएगी, तो वह अपना अनिश्चितकालीन अनशन समाप्त करने के लिए तैयार हैं।
केंद्रीय मंत्रियों जेपी नड्डा और जितेंद्र सिंह को लिखे पत्र में वांगचुक ने कहा कि सरकार की ओर से ऐसा स्पष्ट आश्वासन मिलने के बाद वह स्वयं छात्रों और आंदोलनकारियों से अपना प्रदर्शन स्थगित करने की अपील करेंगे।
उनका कहना है कि आंदोलन में शामिल किसी भी व्यक्ति को कानूनी उत्पीड़न या प्रताड़ना का सामना नहीं करना चाहिए।
अपने पत्र में उन्होंने सरकार से स्पष्ट और बिना किसी शर्त के भरोसा देने का आग्रह किया कि आंदोलन में शामिल युवाओं के खिलाफ कोई प्रतिकूल कानूनी कार्रवाई नहीं होगी।
वांगचुक ने कहा कि छात्रों ने केवल निष्पक्ष, पारदर्शी और जवाबदेह परीक्षा प्रणाली तथा कथित NEET प्रश्नपत्र लीक से प्रभावित विद्यार्थियों के लिए न्याय की मांग उठाई है। लोकतांत्रिक तरीके से अपनी बात रखना किसी अपराध की श्रेणी में नहीं आना चाहिए।
वांगचुक ने अस्पताल में उनसे मिलने पहुंचे दोनों केंद्रीय मंत्रियों का आभार भी व्यक्त किया। उन्होंने कहा कि मंत्रियों ने उन्हें भरोसा दिलाया है कि सरकार उनकी प्रमुख मांगों पर सकारात्मक रूप से विचार करेगी।
इनमें कथित परीक्षा विवाद के बाद आत्महत्या करने वाले छात्रों के परिवारों को पर्याप्त मुआवजा, संसद में पूरे मामले पर विस्तृत चर्चा तथा जवाबदेही तय करने के साथ शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान के इस्तीफे पर विचार जैसी मांगें शामिल हैं।
20 जुलाई को आयोजित ‘संसद चलो’ मार्च का उल्लेख करते हुए वांगचुक ने कहा कि प्रदर्शन पूरी तरह शांतिपूर्ण था, लेकिन पुलिस ने आवश्यकता से अधिक बल प्रयोग किया।
उन्होंने सरकार से लोकतांत्रिक परंपराओं पर विश्वास बनाए रखने और आंदोलन में शामिल लोगों के खिलाफ किसी भी प्रकार के मुकदमे, उत्पीड़न या प्रतिशोधात्मक कार्रवाई से बचने की अपील की।
NEET विवाद को लेकर जारी अपने अनशन पर उन्होंने कहा कि यदि सरकार मांगा गया आश्वासन देती है तो वह तुरंत अपना उपवास समाप्त कर देंगे।
उनके अनुसार इससे यह संदेश जाएगा कि सरकार ने न केवल उनकी अपील बल्कि देश के करोड़ों युवाओं की भावनाओं और चिंताओं को भी गंभीरता से सुना है।
बुधवार को वांगचुक के आमरण अनशन का 25वां दिन था। उनका आंदोलन कथित NEET प्रश्नपत्र लीक मामले में जवाबदेही और परीक्षा प्रणाली में सुधार की मांग को लेकर चल रहे देशव्यापी अभियान का प्रमुख प्रतीक बन चुका है।
इस बीच दिल्ली उच्च न्यायालय ने प्रदर्शन के दौरान बल प्रयोग के आरोपों पर केंद्र सरकार और दिल्ली पुलिस से जवाब मांगा तथा मामले की अगली सुनवाई 11 सितंबर के लिए निर्धारित की।
उच्च न्यायालय दो याचिकाओं पर सुनवाई कर रहा था, जिनमें कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी (सीजेपी) की संसद मार्च के दौरान दिल्ली पुलिस द्वारा कथित अत्यधिक बल प्रयोग की जांच के लिए विशेष जांच दल (एसआईटी) गठित करने की मांग की गई है।
याचिकाकर्ताओं ने अदालत से कहा कि शांतिपूर्ण प्रदर्शनकारियों पर बिना किसी पूर्व चेतावनी के बल प्रयोग किया गया और एक महिला के साथ कथित मारपीट के आरोपों को लेकर अतिरिक्त डीसीपी संदीप लांबा को भी तलब करने की मांग की।
दूसरी ओर दिल्ली पुलिस ने अदालत में कहा कि प्रदर्शन बाद में शांतिपूर्ण नहीं रहा। पुलिस का दावा है कि उपलब्ध वीडियो फुटेज में कई पुलिसकर्मी घायल दिखाई दे रहे हैं और प्रदर्शनकारियों के एक समूह ने पथराव तथा हिंसक गतिविधियों का सहारा लिया, जिसके बाद कानून-व्यवस्था बनाए रखने के लिए कार्रवाई करना आवश्यक हो गया।
उल्लेखनीय है कि सोमवार को कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी (सीजेपी) के नेतृत्व में हजारों प्रदर्शनकारी जंतर-मंतर पर एकत्र हुए थे और ‘संसद चलो’ मार्च निकालते हुए कथित NEET प्रश्नपत्र लीक मामले में जवाबदेही तय करने तथा केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान के इस्तीफे की मांग कर रहे थे।
मानसून सत्र के पहले दिन जब प्रदर्शनकारी संसद की ओर बढ़ने लगे, तब भारी सुरक्षा व्यवस्था के बीच पुलिस ने उन्हें रोकने के लिए आंसू गैस के गोले छोड़े और लाठीचार्ज किया।
