Southwest Monsoon Wreaks Havoc Across India: Heavy Rain Triggers Floods, Landslides and Travel Disruptions in Nearly 95% of the Country
New Delhi: The Southwest Monsoon has intensified across almost 95 per cent of India, leaving a trail of destruction in several states.
While torrential downpours, thunderstorms and cloudbursts have battered parts of the Himalayan region, many other states are witnessing continuous heavy showers, causing floods, waterlogging, landslides and major disruption to normal life.
From Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand to Odisha, Gujarat and Maharashtra, the weather has turned increasingly severe.
The Himalayan states continue to face the worst impact of the relentless rainfall. Cloudbursts have been reported from parts of Himachal Pradesh, where flash floods have swept away roads and several vehicles.
In Jammu and Kashmir, rain has persisted for nearly 70 hours in many places, while Delhi-NCR has experienced overcast skies and intermittent showers, although rainfall has remained comparatively lower than expected.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over the next 24 hours in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Assam, Nagaland and parts of Karnataka. Similar weather conditions are expected in Odisha, Gujarat, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Konkan, central Maharashtra, and several other regions, with isolated places likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall ranging between 12 and 20 centimetres.
Several states are also likely to witness strong winds accompanied by rain. Punjab, Haryana, western Rajasthan, and large parts of Maharashtra may experience wind speeds of 60 to 125 kmph during intense weather activity.
Gusty winds of 40 to 60 kmph are also expected over Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada and neighbouring regions.
The weather department has placed multiple states under red alert due to the possibility of exceptionally heavy rainfall.
Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra remain among the worst-affected regions, while authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
Mumbai Battles Flood-Like Situation
India’s financial capital is witnessing one of the season’s heaviest spells of rain. Several parts of Mumbai have been submerged after continuous downpours.
During the five hours ending Friday morning, the city recorded 100 mm of rainfall, while the eastern suburbs received around 73.8 mm. Weather officials expect another eight centimetres of rainfall over the next 24 hours.
Despite the severe weather, the administration has not announced a public holiday.
However, commuters have been advised to step out only if necessary and to follow official weather updates. As a precaution, an NDRF team has been stationed in the state until September 30 due to the increasing flood threat.
Shipra River Water Level Rises in Ujjain
Heavy rainfall across Madhya Pradesh has significantly raised the water level of the Shipra River. In Ujjain, the river overflowed on Friday, submerging several temples situated near the ghats and affecting movement in low-lying areas.
Rivers and Streams Overflow in Uttarakhand
Continuous rainfall has also worsened the situation in Uttarakhand. In Uttarkashi district, rising water levels in rivers and seasonal streams have disrupted connectivity, with debris and floodwater reaching stretches near the Gangotri Highway.
Residents have expressed concern, recalling last year’s landslides in the region and warning that continued rainfall could increase the risk of further slope failures.
Amarnath Yatra Remains Suspended
Persistent rainfall has also affected the Amarnath pilgrimage. Authorities have temporarily suspended the yatra because of the threat posed by heavy rain and landslides.
So far, around 5,24,441 pilgrims have visited the holy cave shrine and paid obeisance to Baba Barfani.
Officials stated that fresh movement of pilgrims from both the Baltal and Pahalgam base camps will resume only after weather conditions improve. Before the suspension, 103 pilgrims were safely escorted to the Baltal base camp.

दक्षिण-पश्चिम मानसून ने देश के लगभग 95 प्रतिशत हिस्से को अपनी चपेट में ले लिया है। लगातार हो रही मूसलाधार बारिश ने अनेक राज्यों में सामान्य जनजीवन को बुरी तरह प्रभावित कर दिया है।
कहीं बादल फटने की घटनाएं सामने आ रही हैं तो कहीं बाढ़, जलभराव और भूस्खलन ने हालात बिगाड़ दिए हैं। जम्मू-कश्मीर, हिमाचल प्रदेश और उत्तराखंड से लेकर ओडिशा, गुजरात तथा महाराष्ट्र तक मौसम का रुख बेहद गंभीर बना हुआ है।
पहाड़ी राज्यों में बारिश का सबसे अधिक असर देखने को मिल रहा है। हिमाचल प्रदेश के कई इलाकों में बादल फटने के बाद अचानक आई बाढ़ ने सड़कें और वाहन बहा दिए। जम्मू-कश्मीर में कई स्थानों पर करीब 70 घंटे से लगातार वर्षा हो रही है। वहीं दिल्ली-एनसीआर में बादल छाए रहने और रुक-रुककर बारिश का दौर जारी है, हालांकि अनुमान के मुकाबले वर्षा अपेक्षाकृत कम दर्ज की गई है।
भारतीय मौसम विज्ञान विभाग (आईएमडी) ने अगले 24 घंटे के लिए चेतावनी जारी की है। विभाग के अनुसार जम्मू-कश्मीर, उत्तर प्रदेश, पूर्वी राजस्थान, असम, नागालैंड और कर्नाटक के कुछ हिस्सों में भारी से अत्यधिक भारी वर्षा की संभावना है। इसके अलावा ओडिशा, गुजरात, अंडमान एवं निकोबार द्वीप समूह, पूर्वी मध्य प्रदेश, छत्तीसगढ़, कोंकण और मध्य महाराष्ट्र सहित कई क्षेत्रों में 12 से 20 सेंटीमीटर तक बारिश हो सकती है।
बारिश के साथ तेज हवाओं का दौर भी कई राज्यों में बना रहेगा। पंजाब, हरियाणा, पश्चिमी राजस्थान और महाराष्ट्र के अनेक इलाकों में 60 से 125 किलोमीटर प्रति घंटे की रफ्तार से तेज हवाएं चलने की आशंका है। वहीं बिहार, झारखंड, पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश, पूर्वी राजस्थान, मध्य प्रदेश, मराठवाड़ा और आसपास के क्षेत्रों में 40 से 60 किलोमीटर प्रति घंटे की गति से हवा चल सकती है।
मौसम विभाग ने कई राज्यों के लिए रेड अलर्ट जारी किया है। हिमाचल प्रदेश और महाराष्ट्र सबसे अधिक प्रभावित राज्यों में शामिल हैं। प्रशासन ने लोगों से सतर्क रहने और अत्यावश्यक होने पर ही यात्रा करने की सलाह दी है।
मुंबई में बाढ़ जैसे हालात
देश की आर्थिक राजधानी मुंबई लगातार भारी बारिश से जूझ रही है। शहर के कई हिस्सों में जलभराव की स्थिति पैदा हो गई है। शुक्रवार सुबह तक के पांच घंटे के दौरान मुंबई में लगभग 100 मिमी बारिश दर्ज की गई, जबकि पूर्वी उपनगरों में 73.8 मिमी वर्षा रिकॉर्ड की गई। मौसम विभाग ने अगले 24 घंटे में करीब आठ सेंटीमीटर और बारिश होने का अनुमान जताया है।
हालात गंभीर होने के बावजूद प्रशासन ने फिलहाल सार्वजनिक अवकाश घोषित नहीं किया है। हालांकि नागरिकों से केवल आवश्यक होने पर ही घर से निकलने और मौसम संबंधी आधिकारिक सलाह का पालन करने की अपील की गई है। बाढ़ के बढ़ते खतरे को देखते हुए 30 सितंबर तक राज्य में एनडीआरएफ की एक टीम तैनात कर दी गई है।
उज्जैन में शिप्रा नदी उफान पर
मध्य प्रदेश में लगातार हो रही वर्षा का असर उज्जैन में भी दिखाई दे रहा है। भारी बारिश के कारण शिप्रा नदी का जलस्तर तेजी से बढ़ गया है, जिससे घाटों के समीप स्थित कई मंदिर पानी से घिर गए हैं और निचले इलाकों में आवागमन प्रभावित हुआ है।
उत्तराखंड में उफनाए नदी-नाले
उत्तराखंड में लगातार बरसात ने स्थिति और चुनौतीपूर्ण बना दी है। उत्तरकाशी जिले में नदियों और बरसाती नालों का जलस्तर बढ़ने से कई मार्ग प्रभावित हुए हैं। मलबा और तेज बहाव गंगोत्री हाईवे तक पहुंच गया है। स्थानीय लोगों का कहना है कि पिछले वर्ष भी भूस्खलन के कारण क्षेत्र में नुकसान हुआ था और यदि वर्षा का सिलसिला जारी रहा तो खतरा और बढ़ सकता है।
अमरनाथ यात्रा अस्थायी रूप से रोकी गई
लगातार खराब मौसम का असर अमरनाथ यात्रा पर भी पड़ा है। भारी वर्षा और भूस्खलन के खतरे को देखते हुए प्रशासन ने यात्रा को फिलहाल स्थगित कर दिया है। अब तक 5,24,441 श्रद्धालु पवित्र गुफा में बाबा बर्फानी के दर्शन कर चुके हैं।
अधिकारियों के अनुसार मौसम सामान्य होने के बाद ही बालटाल और पहलगाम दोनों आधार शिविरों से श्रद्धालुओं की आवाजाही दोबारा शुरू की जाएगी। यात्रा रोके जाने से पहले 103 यात्रियों को सुरक्षित बालटाल आधार शिविर पहुंचाया गया था।
