SP Leader Pawan Kumar Yadav Shot Dead Near Handia Kotwali in Prayagraj
Three bike-borne assailants flee towards Varanasi; CCTV footage examined as police probe political, contractual and local rivalry angles.
PRAYAGRAJ: Samajwadi Party Gangapar district secretary Pawan Kumar Yadav was shot dead near Handia Kotwali in Prayagraj on Tuesday evening, triggering panic in the area and prompting a police search for three unidentified attackers.
Yadav, 48, was targeted shortly after leaving a hardware shop near the police station.
According to the preliminary account, a man wearing a helmet approached him from behind and fired a single shot into his back as he was getting into his car.
The assailant then escaped on a motorcycle along with two accomplices, heading towards Varanasi.
The incident occurred barely 200 metres from Handia Kotwali at around 5.30 pm. Yadav, a resident of Mugrawan village in the Handia police station area, had arrived in the Karmanasha area with his driver.
He had spent nearly an hour at the hardware shop of his friend Gyanchand before deciding to return home.
As Yadav reached his vehicle and opened the door, the armed attacker reportedly came up behind him and fired.
He collapsed on the spot. Hearing the gunshot, people in the vicinity rushed towards the scene and informed the police.
Yadav was initially taken to a private hospital for treatment. He was subsequently referred to Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital in Prayagraj, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police have recovered CCTV footage from cameras installed near the crime scene.
The visuals reportedly show three men on a motorcycle. The alleged shooter and another member of the group were wearing helmets, while the motorcycle rider’s face was visible.
DCP Gangnagar Kuldeep Singh Gunawat said police teams had been deployed to identify and apprehend those responsible.
He said investigators were examining the available CCTV footage and that the circumstances behind the killing were still being established.
The murder investigation was subsequently widened to several possible motives.
Police are examining whether the killing could be connected with Yadav’s political activities, his involvement in contractual work or disputes relating to property plotting.
Yadav had been associated with politics as well as government-related contract work. Police are looking into whether he had developed any dispute with anyone over contracts.
The possibility of political rivalry is also being examined, particularly with panchayat elections approaching.
Investigators are also looking into his political background. Yadav had previously served as the elected village head and was currently a BDC member from Kanakpur village.
Police are examining whether any dispute connected with the forthcoming village-level electoral contest could have played a role.
Late Tuesday night, a case was registered against unidentified assailants on the complaint of Yadav’s elder brother, Ashok Yadav.
Police also detained several suspects for questioning, including a person described as a history-sheeter.
The investigation has so far not established a clear motive.
Police officials said even members of Yadav’s family were unable to identify any particular person with whom he might have had a serious enmity, which also contributed to the delay in filing the complaint.
Yadav had reportedly undergone heart surgery a few months ago and had reduced his movements since then.
According to his family, he had rarely been venturing out of his home and had visited the town after several days on Tuesday.
Political reaction follows killing.
The killing prompted reactions from Samajwadi Party leaders and supporters.
Party spokesperson Dan Bahadur Madhur alleged that the continuing incidents of murder in Uttar Pradesh raised questions about the government’s claim of maintaining a zero-tolerance policy towards crime.
He demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible, security for Yadav’s family and financial assistance of Rs 50 lakh.
Mandal in-charge and district president Ramesh Kesarwani informed the police commissioner and DCP Gangapar about the incident and sought the immediate arrest of the accused.
He also warned that traders would take to the streets if the suspects were not arrested.
The incident was also brought to the attention of the Chief Minister through email. Several party workers and local leaders, including Rajendra Kesarwani, Dharmendra Jaiswal, Dhirendra Kesarwani, Ramnaresh Vishwakarma, Bhola Kesarwani, Aman Kesarwani, Subhash Chandra Kesarwani, Santosh Kesarwani, Manoj Agrahari and Vinod Kesarwani, expressed grief over the killing.
Political family background
Pawan Kumar Yadav came from a family with a long association with village politics.
His father, Kamta Prasad, had served as village head twice, while his mother, Dhanraji Devi, had also held the post.
Yadav subsequently entered local politics and continued the family’s political involvement.
During his tenure as village head, he also served as district president of the Pradhan Sangh.
He later became a BDC member representing Kanakpur village.
Yadav was the younger of two brothers. His elder brother Ashok runs a grocery shop in the village. Yadav is survived by his wife, Neetu, a son and three daughters.
Police said the investigation remains underway and that the CCTV footage, questioning of detained suspects and examination of Yadav’s professional and political associations could help establish the motive and identify the attackers.

प्रयागराज: हंडिया कोतवाली से महज करीब 200 मीटर की दूरी पर मंगलवार शाम समाजवादी पार्टी गंगापार के जिला सचिव पवन कुमार यादव की गोली मारकर हत्या कर दी गई।
वारदात के बाद बाइक सवार तीन हमलावर वाराणसी की दिशा में फरार हो गए। घटना से इलाके में हड़कंप मच गया। पुलिस ने हमलावरों की तलाश तेज कर दी है।
हंडिया क्षेत्र के मुगरांव गांव निवासी 48 वर्षीय पवन कुमार यादव मंगलवार शाम अपने चालक के साथ कार से कर्मनाशा पहुंचे थे।
यहां वह अपने मित्र ज्ञानचंद की हार्डवेयर की दुकान पर करीब एक घंटे तक रुके। लगभग साढ़े पाँच बजे वह घर लौटने के लिए दुकान से निकला।
पवन यादव जैसे ही अपनी कार के पास पहुंचे और गेट खोलने लगे, तभी पीछे से हेलमेट लगाए एक युवक उनके करीब आया और पीठ में गोली मार दी।
गोली लगते ही वह जमीन पर गिर पड़ा। वारदात के बाद हमलावर बाइक पर सवार अपने दो साथियों के साथ मौके से निकल गया।
फायरिंग की आवाज सुनकर आसपास मौजूद लोग घटनास्थल पर पहुंचे और पुलिस को सूचना दी। घायल पवन यादव को पहले स्थानीय निजी अस्पताल ले जाया गया।
वहां से उन्हें एसआरएन अस्पताल भेजा गया, लेकिन अस्पताल पहुंचने पर चिकित्सकों ने उन्हें मृत घोषित कर दिया।
पुलिस को घटनास्थल के आसपास लगे सीसीटीवी कैमरों से महत्वपूर्ण सुराग मिले हैं। फुटेज में बाइक पर तीन लोग दिखाई दे रहे हैं।
इनमें गोली चलाने वाला और उसका एक साथी हेलमेट पहने नजर आ रहा है, जबकि बाइक चला रहे युवक का चेहरा खुला हुआ था। पुलिस फुटेज के आधार पर उनकी पहचान करने में जुटी है।
डीसीपी गंगानगर कुलदीप सिंह गुनावत के मुताबिक, घटना से संबंधित कुछ सीसीटीवी फुटेज पुलिस के हाथ लगे हैं। हमलावरों की गिरफ्तारी के लिए पुलिस की कई टीमें लगाई गई हैं।
हत्या के पीछे की वजह का पता लगाने के लिए विभिन्न पहलुओं से जांच की जा रही है।
पुलिस ने हत्या के संभावित कारणों को लेकर भी जांच का दायरा बढ़ाया है। पवन यादव राजनीति के अलावा ठेकेदारी और प्लॉटिंग के काम से भी जुड़े हुए थे।
ऐसे में यह पता लगाया जा रहा है कि कहीं किसी ठेके या व्यावसायिक विवाद के चलते तो उनकी हत्या नहीं की गई।
उनकी राजनीतिक गतिविधियों को भी जांच के दायरे में रखा गया है। पवन यादव पहले गांव के प्रधान रह चुके थे और वर्तमान में कनकपुर गांव से बीडीसी सदस्य हैं।
पंचायत चुनाव नजदीक होने के कारण पुलिस इस बात की भी पड़ताल कर रही है कि कहीं स्थानीय राजनीतिक प्रतिद्वंद्विता का कोई संबंध तो इस वारदात से नहीं है।
देर रात पवन यादव के बड़े भाई अशोक यादव की तहरीर पर पुलिस ने अज्ञात हमलावरों के खिलाफ मुकदमा दर्ज किया। पुलिस ने करीब आधा दर्जन संदिग्धों को हिरासत में लेकर पूछताछ शुरू की है। इनमें एक व्यक्ति के हिस्ट्रीशीटर होने की जानकारी भी सामने आई है।
पुलिस के अनुसार, परिवार के सदस्य भी फिलहाल किसी ऐसी स्पष्ट दुश्मनी के बारे में जानकारी नहीं दे सके हैं, जिससे हत्या की वजह तत्काल सामने आ सके। इसी कारण पुलिस व्यक्तिगत रंजिश समेत अन्य संभावित कारणों की भी जांच कर रही है।
बताया गया है कि पवन यादव को कुछ समय पहले हृदय संबंधी समस्या के चलते सर्जरी करानी पड़ी थी। इसके बाद से उन्होंने घर से बाहर निकलना काफी कम कर दिया था। परिवार के मुताबिक, मंगलवार को वह कई दिनों बाद कस्बे की ओर आए थे।
राजनीतिक और सामाजिक परिवार से थे पवन यादव
पवन यादव का परिवार लंबे समय से स्थानीय राजनीति से जुड़ा रहा है। उनके पिता कामता प्रसाद दो बार गांव के प्रधान रह चुके थे। उनकी मां धनराजी देवी ने भी ग्राम प्रधान के रूप में जिम्मेदारी संभाली थी।
माता-पिता के बाद पवन यादव ने परिवार की राजनीतिक विरासत को आगे बढ़ाया। वह स्वयं भी गांव के प्रधान बने और अपने कार्यकाल के दौरान प्रधान संघ के जिलाध्यक्ष की जिम्मेदारी संभाली। वर्तमान में वह कनकपुर गांव से बीडीसी सदस्य थे।
पवन यादव दो भाइयों में छोटे थे। उनके बड़े भाई अशोक यादव गांव में परचून की दुकान चलाते हैं। परिवार में उनकी पत्नी नीतू, एक बेटा और तीन बेटियां हैं।
सपा नेताओं ने की गिरफ्तारी की मांग
हत्या की सूचना फैलते ही समाजवादी पार्टी के स्थानीय नेताओं और कार्यकर्ताओं में आक्रोश फैल गया। पार्टी प्रवक्ता दान बहादुर मधुर ने सरकार की कानून-व्यवस्था को लेकर सवाल उठाते हुए आरोप लगाया कि प्रदेश में लगातार हो रही हत्याएं सरकार के जीरो टॉलरेंस के दावे पर सवाल खड़े करती हैं।
उन्होंने हत्याकांड में शामिल लोगों की तत्काल गिरफ्तारी, मृतक के परिवार को सुरक्षा और 50 लाख रुपये की आर्थिक सहायता देने की मांग की।
मंडल प्रभारी एवं जिलाध्यक्ष रमेश केसरवानी ने पुलिस कमिश्नर और डीसीपी गंगापार से संपर्क कर आरोपियों को जल्द गिरफ्तार करने की मांग की।
उन्होंने कहा कि यदि गिरफ्तारी में देरी हुई तो व्यापारी सड़क पर उतरकर विरोध करेंगे। मुख्यमंत्री को भी ई-मेल के माध्यम से घटना की जानकारी दी गई।
राजेंद्र केसरवानी, धर्मेंद्र जायसवाल, धीरेंद्र केसरवानी, रामनरेश विश्वकर्मा, भोला केसरवानी, अमन केसरवानी, सुभाष चंद्र केसरवानी, संतोष केसरवानी, मनोज अग्रहरि और विनोद केसरवानी समेत कई नेताओं ने पवन यादव के निधन पर शोक जताया।
फिलहाल पुलिस सीसीटीवी फुटेज, हिरासत में लिए गए संदिग्धों से पूछताछ और मृतक के राजनीतिक तथा व्यावसायिक संपर्कों की पड़ताल के आधार पर मामले की कड़ियां जोड़ने में जुटी है।
पुलिस का कहना है कि हमलावरों की पहचान और हत्या की वास्तविक वजह सामने लाने के प्रयास जारी हैं।
