Trump at UN: Iran Faces Choice Between Deal and Destruction, US President Says
US president defends military campaign against Tehran while leaving the door open to negotiations after the November midterm elections
UNITED NATIONS: US President Donald Trump used his appearance before world leaders at the United Nations on Tuesday to deliver a dual message to Iran: Washington remains prepared to use overwhelming military force, but a negotiated settlement is still possible.
Speaking during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Trump said the central issue for his administration was ensuring that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon.
He presented a possible agreement as the alternative to continued confrontation and warned that the consequences for Tehran could become far more severe if diplomacy fails.
Trump said he expected negotiations eventually to produce an agreement, but suggested that a breakthrough could come only after the US midterm elections in November.
He claimed Tehran was waiting to see the political outcome in the United States before making its next move.
The speech came against the backdrop of the continuing US-Iran confrontation and ongoing diplomatic contacts.
Trump said his administration had initially attempted negotiations before resorting to military action, portraying the campaign as an effort to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
He again ruled out allowing Tehran to acquire such a weapon.
The Iranian delegation walked out of the General Assembly chamber during Trump’s remarks about the conflict, according to reports.
The departure underscored the deep divide between Washington and Tehran as efforts to find a diplomatic route forward continue.
Trump portrays US power as a diplomatic tool.
Trump used much of his address to argue that military strength and diplomacy were not contradictory elements of his foreign policy.
He contrasted his administration’s actions with what he described as years of international leaders talking without resolving major conflicts.
His message was that the threat of force could itself be used to push opposing governments towards negotiations.
On Iran, he described Tehran as having previously wielded considerable influence across the Middle East but argued that American military action had substantially weakened that position.
The president also accused Iran of supporting terrorism and linked his opposition to Tehran’s nuclear programme with broader US security concerns.
Trump’s remarks came as the conflict continues to affect regional stability and energy markets, adding pressure for a diplomatic solution even as Washington maintains its military posture.
Iran deal remains possible, Trump says
Despite the severity of his warning, Trump did not close the door on negotiations.
Instead, he said he believed an agreement could be reached following the November elections.
His comments therefore combined a threat of further military escalation with an offer of a potential diplomatic exit.
Later, Trump said US representatives Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff had met Iranian representatives on the sidelines of the UN gathering.
He described the meeting as positive while indicating that its outcome remained uncertain.
The remarks suggest that Washington’s strategy remains centred on maintaining pressure while keeping negotiations available as an alternative to a prolonged conflict.
Trump highlights claims of settling international conflicts
Trump also devoted considerable attention to his assertion that his administration had helped bring several international conflicts toward settlement.
He cited a list that included Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, India and Pakistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the Gaza conflict.
He presented these episodes as evidence of what he described as an active US diplomatic role.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received particular mention. Trump said Sharif had credited him with helping save 30 million lives following the India-Pakistan conflict.
Trump also referred to comments attributed to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan while highlighting the US role in the Armenia-Azerbaijan settlement.
India rejects Trump’s mediation claim.
Trump’s reference to the India-Pakistan conflict carries a significant qualification from New Delhi.
India has repeatedly rejected the US president’s claims that Washington mediated the May 2025 cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan.
New Delhi has maintained that the understanding to halt military action resulted from direct communication between the two countries’ military establishments.
Trump nevertheless included the episode among the conflicts he said his administration helped settle and again presented it as an example of his approach to international diplomacy.
His UN address thus combined an uncompromising warning to Iran with a broader attempt to portray his administration as capable of using pressure, negotiation and personal diplomacy to address international conflicts.
