WASHINGTON: Artificial intelligence, semiconductors and access to critical minerals are set to form an unusual bridge between diplomacy and corporate power when Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives in Washington for a high-profile state visit.
US President Donald Trump is preparing to host Xi at the White House on Thursday, with leading figures from Silicon Valley and corporate America expected to join the Chinese leader for a state dinner.
The guest list includes Tesla’s Elon Musk, Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Apple’s Tim Cook and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, according to reports.
The gathering comes at a particularly sensitive point in US-China relations. Technology has moved well beyond being a commercial issue, with access to advanced computing, AI systems and semiconductor technology increasingly tied to national-security concerns.
For companies represented at the dinner, China is simultaneously a major market, manufacturing centre, source of supply-chain dependencies and an increasingly important competitor in strategic technologies.
That makes the presence of their chief executives at a dinner for Xi more than a ceremonial detail.
A summit shaped by technology and trade
Trump and Xi are expected to discuss several contentious issues during the visit, including tariffs, rare-earth supplies and artificial intelligence.

Musk and other CEOs bring China business links
Musk’s participation is particularly notable because Tesla has extensive business interests in China, including its major production facility in Shanghai. His presence also adds another dimension because of his prominent relationship with Trump.
Other companies represented at the dinner have similarly complicated links with the Chinese economy.
Apple depends heavily on Chinese manufacturing networks, while Nvidia operates in a market shaped by US restrictions on advanced chip exports.
Google and Microsoft, meanwhile, are major players in the global AI industry.
The guest list extends beyond technology. JPMorgan chief Jamie Dimon, Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser and Pfizer chief Albert Bourla are also expected to attend, underscoring the broader business significance attached to Xi’s visit.
Trump to personally receive Xi
Xi’s arrival itself will carry unusual ceremonial significance. Trump is scheduled to meet the Chinese president and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday.
The White House has confirmed that Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will host the Chinese couple for a formal state arrival ceremony on Thursday.
The programme includes military ceremonial events and a flyover by a B-2 Spirit bomber and four F-22 Raptors.
The state dinner will take place Thursday evening in the White House East Room.
On Friday, Trump and Melania Trump are scheduled to host Xi and Peng for tea before accompanying them to the National Archives, according to the White House itinerary.
Taiwan and Iran add to the diplomatic complexity
Trade and technology are not the only difficult subjects facing Trump and Xi.
Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive issues in the bilateral relationship. Beijing regards Taiwan as part of China, while Washington maintains close unofficial ties with Taipei and is a major supplier of US military equipment to the island.
Iran is another area where the interests of Washington and Beijing may diverge. Trump has been pursuing a forceful policy toward Tehran, while China’s broader diplomatic and economic relationship with Iran adds another layer to the discussions.
Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng has meanwhile warned Washington against crossing what Beijing considers fundamental interests, including Taiwan, China’s political system and its development rights.
He has called for disagreements to be managed through dialogue rather than confrontation.
Washington and Beijing seek stability without resolving every dispute
The visit comes after months of attempts by the two governments to stabilise a relationship strained by tariffs, technology restrictions and competition over strategic supply chains.
The two sides are also facing a November deadline for their existing tariff arrangement, making trade a key practical issue for the summit.
US officials have indicated that limited tariff relief could be considered for some goods, while suggesting that Washington is unlikely to simply abandon its controls on strategically important technologies.
Against that backdrop, the White House dinner has acquired significance beyond its ceremonial purpose.
It will put some of America’s most powerful technology and business executives in the same room as the leader of the country with which their companies are simultaneously doing business, competing for markets and navigating increasingly complex government restrictions.
