US President Donald Trump has confirmed that security officials secretly transferred him from Air Force One to a different military aircraft during his departure from Turkey last month, saying the move was made after authorities received a reported threat linked to Iran.
Trump said he followed instructions from the US Secret Service and military officials, who decided that he should leave the presidential aircraft and board another plane.
“I just follow what they’d like to do,” Trump told reporters, acknowledging the aircraft switch after the operation was reported by The Washington Post.
The president also offered an unusual assessment of the security risk, saying he believed the aircraft he ultimately boarded may actually have been more vulnerable because an attacker would be more likely to target the plane associated with his movements.
Secret transfer carried out as security precaution
Trump had travelled to Ankara for a NATO summit before the reported security operation was carried out.
According to the report, US officials had received what was described as a credible threat involving Iran and a possible attack against Trump or the aircraft carrying him.
The precise nature and source of the threat were not publicly disclosed.
The resulting operation was designed to obscure Trump’s movements.
A US official described the manoeuvre as a “deception operation”.
According to the account, Trump was moved across the airport tarmac in a catering vehicle before being taken to a smaller US Air Force C-32A aircraft.
The change was kept sufficiently secret that journalists travelling with the presidential delegation were reportedly unaware of Trump’s actual location.
Some White House personnel were also said not to have known about the switch.
Journalists kept in the dark
Reporters who believed they were travelling on Trump’s presidential aircraft were instructed to keep the window shades in the press cabin closed.
When questioned about the unusual instruction, Trump suggested it was linked to the security situation.
He told reporters they were “probably on a dangerous flight” and added that if he was travelling on it, they would be travelling on it as well.
Trump’s confirmation provides the first public acknowledgement from the president that the aircraft switch was an intentional security measure rather than a routine change in travel arrangements.
The episode highlights the elaborate precautions used by US security agencies to conceal the president’s movements when officials believe there may be a credible threat.
Trump had used Qatar’s gifted Boeing 747-8
The aircraft Trump was originally expected to use was the newly renovated Boeing 747-8 provided to the United States by Qatar.
The Turkey journey was Trump’s first international trip using the aircraft.
The jet has attracted considerable attention since its transfer, including scrutiny over the cost and speed of its refurbishment and questions surrounding its security arrangements.
Instead of remaining aboard the Boeing 747-8 for the return journey, Trump was moved to a C-32A, a military aircraft derived from the Boeing 757 and commonly used for transporting senior US government officials.
Trump says alternate aircraft faced greater risk
Trump’s comments added another striking element to the episode.
He said the aircraft he ultimately travelled on may have presented a greater potential target because an adversary would be more likely to identify it as carrying him.
His remarks did not provide details about the alleged Iranian threat or indicate whether US authorities had identified a specific planned attack.
The incident nevertheless illustrates the extent to which presidential travel can be altered at short notice when intelligence or security assessments change.
Neither the White House nor US military officials have publicly disclosed detailed information about the threat that prompted the operation.
