Donald Trump says preventing an Iranian nuclear weapon remains the US priority as a 60-day negotiating period expires without a breakthrough, while tensions persist around the Strait of Hormuz.
Washington: The diplomatic clock has run out on the latest US-Iran negotiating window, but there is little indication that Washington and Tehran have bridged their differences over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
US President Donald Trump on Monday made clear that the central condition for any agreement remains unchanged: Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon.
His remarks came as the 60 days established under a June understanding expired without the kind of settlement Washington had been seeking.
Rather than signalling an imminent agreement, Trump suggested that Tehran had yet to accept the terms he considers essential.
His assessment points to a difficult road ahead for diplomacy, with the two sides still divided over the future of Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
Trump had already highlighted the issue earlier in the day in a post on Truth Social, stressing that stopping Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon was the foremost objective of his administration.
The diplomatic impasse is unfolding alongside a separate but closely linked flashpoint: the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump used his remarks to make an expansive claim over the strategically vital waterway, saying he favoured declaring the strait a US territory and asserting that the United States has complete control over the passage.
He also sought to project confidence over the movement of oil through the region, saying millions of barrels were being transported through the strategic route.
According to Trump, the waterway remains open, and oil prices could continue to move lower unless Washington chooses to take a substantially more forceful course of action.
At the same time, the president portrayed Iran as facing severe economic difficulties, citing what he described as inflation of 300 per cent and saying the country’s overall situation was in disarray.
The comments come at a particularly sensitive moment.
The June agreement had created a limited period for diplomacy, but that window has now closed while restrictions affecting the Hormuz route remain and substantive discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme have yet to resume.
The stakes extend beyond the immediate US-Iran confrontation.
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial artery for international energy shipments, meaning prolonged instability there could reverberate through oil markets and affect economies far beyond the region.
For now, Trump’s message is that the end of the 60 days does not mean Washington is prepared to compromise on what it considers its fundamental security requirement.
Any future arrangement, in the US president’s formulation, must rule out an Iranian nuclear weapon.
Whether that position can be reconciled with Tehran’s demands will determine whether the two countries return to serious negotiations or move toward another phase of confrontation.
The expiry of the deadline therefore marks less a conclusion than a new test for diplomacy.
With the nuclear issue unresolved and the strategic waters around Hormuz still under scrutiny, the next moves by Washington and Tehran could prove decisive.
