Twisha Sharma Death Case: MP Government Moves High Court to Cancel Retired Judge Giribala Singh’s Anticipatory Bail
The Madhya Pradesh government has approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking cancellation of the anticipatory bail granted to retired district judge Giribala Singh in the controversial death case of her daughter-in-law, model and actor Twisha Sharma.
In a strongly worded petition, the state accused Giribala Singh of tampering with evidence, leaking selective CCTV footage on social media, obstructing the investigation and allowing the alleged crime scene to be compromised following Twisha Sharma’s death earlier this month in Bhopal.
The case, already under intense public scrutiny, has now become one of the most politically and legally sensitive investigations in Madhya Pradesh, involving allegations of dowry harassment, physical cruelty, forensic manipulation and abuse of influence.
State Says Bail Was Granted ‘Mechanically’
In its petition before the High Court, the Madhya Pradesh government argued that the sessions court granted anticipatory bail to Giribala Singh “in a very mechanical manner” without adequately examining the evidence collected during the investigation.
The state claimed that investigators had already gathered substantial material suggesting prolonged mental and emotional harassment of Twisha Sharma after her marriage.
Among the key pieces of evidence cited were WhatsApp conversations allegedly exchanged between Twisha and her parents.
According to the state, those chats reflected the “grave extent” of the distress and alleged torture she was facing within her matrimonial home.
The petition specifically referred to allegations against:
- Giribala Singh
- Samarth Singh
who, according to investigators, are central figures in the case.
Allegations of CCTV Footage Manipulation
One of the most serious allegations made by the government concerns CCTV footage from the residence where Twisha Sharma was found dead.
The state informed the High Court that police had officially seized CCTV footage from the house on May 13 as part of the criminal investigation.
However, the petition alleges that Giribala Singh had separately retained copies of the footage and later leaked selected portions on social media platforms.
According to the government, the clips were strategically released in a manner intended to influence public perception, tamper with evidence and obstruct the ongoing investigation.
The petition stated that only “selected small clips” were circulated publicly rather than the entire footage sequence.
Investigators believe this may have been done deliberately to shape a narrative favourable to the accused side.
State Accuses Giribala Singh of Non-Cooperation
The Madhya Pradesh government further alleged that Giribala Singh repeatedly failed to cooperate with investigators despite multiple notices issued by police authorities.
According to the petition:
- Notices were issued on May 13 and May 14 directing her to appear before investigators.
- She allegedly did not comply with those directions.
- Even after receiving anticipatory bail protection, she reportedly continued avoiding interrogation.
The state also claimed that investigators sent a WhatsApp notice on May 20 seeking her appearance, which was allegedly seen but ignored.
The petition further alleged that when police officers visited her residence on May 21, domestic staff informed them she was unavailable and refused to accept the notice.
Based on these events, the government argued before the High Court that Giribala Singh was “blatantly violating” the conditions attached to anticipatory bail.
Former Judge Accused of Deliberately Avoiding Investigation
The petition repeatedly highlighted Giribala Singh’s background as a former judicial officer.
The state argued that someone with decades of experience in the criminal justice system should have fully understood the legal importance of preserving evidence and cooperating with investigators.
Instead, investigators alleged, she deliberately avoided questioning and provided evasive responses whenever approached.
According to the government, this behaviour raised serious concerns about potential interference with the investigation.
Questions Raised Over Handling of Crime Scene
Another major issue raised by the state concerns the immediate actions taken after Twisha Sharma’s death.
The government pointed out that a police outpost under Katara Hills Police Station was located barely 100 metres from the family’s residence.
Despite this proximity, the petition alleges that Giribala Singh and her son chose to take Twisha directly to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhopal,l without first informing police authorities.
The state argued that this decision compromised the alleged crime scene and potentially affected crucial forensic evidence.
Investigators claimed that early police access could have helped preserve important material evidence at the location.
Allegations of Dowry Harassment and Physical Cruelty
The state also criticised the lower court for allegedly failing to appreciate the seriousness of the allegations contained in the FIR.
According to investigators, Twisha Sharma had allegedly faced:
- Dowry-related harassment
- Mental cruelty
- Physical abuse
Soon after her marriage on December 9, 2025.
The government argued that the allegations reflected a consistent pattern of distress and pressure inside the matrimonial household.
Petition Alleges Pressure to Abort Pregnancy
Among the most disturbing claims made in the petition is the allegation that Twisha Sharma was pressured to terminate a one-month pregnancy shortly before her death.
According to the state, Giribala Singh and Samarth Singh allegedly pressured her during the first week of May 2026 to undergo an abortion.
Investigators appear to view this allegation as an important aspect of the psychological and emotional pressure allegedly faced by Twisha before her death.
Last Phone Call Before Death
The state’s petition also reconstructs what it describes as the final sequence of communication before Twisha Sharma died.
According to investigators, Twisha remained in touch with her family throughout the day of the incident.
At approximately 9:41 pm, she allegedly called her relatives, during which family members reportedly heard Samarth Singh shouting in the background before the call suddenly disconnected.
The petition states that Twisha’s family repeatedly attempted to contact both Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh afterwards, but allegedly received no response.
Roughly 50 minutes later, at around 10:35 pm, Giribala Singh allegedly informed Twisha’s sister-in-law over the phone that Twisha had died.
Medical Findings Cited by State
The government also relied on preliminary medical findings collected during the investigation.
According to the petition, medical evidence suggests that Twisha Sharma had:
- Ligature marks around her neck
- Injuries to other parts of her body
The state argued that these findings strengthened the seriousness of the allegations and warranted a deeper custodial investigation rather than protection from arrest.
Case Now Handed Over to CBI
The matter has now been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation following mounting public pressure and demands from Twisha Sharma’s family.
The decision to involve the CBI reflects the extraordinary sensitivity surrounding the case, especially because it involves:
- A former judge
- Allegations of evidence manipulation
- Questions over forensic handling
- Claims of influence over investigation processes
The case has rapidly evolved into one of the most closely watched criminal investigations in Madhya Pradesh.
Public Attention and Legal Scrutiny Intensify
The death of Twisha Sharma has sparked widespread public debate around:
- Dowry-related abuse
- Influence and privilege in criminal investigations
- Transparency in forensic procedures
- Accountability of powerful individuals
Women’s rights groups, legal observers and civil society organisations continue monitoring the developments closely.
At the centre of the controversy now lies a critical legal question before the High Court — whether the allegations and conduct described by the state justify cancelling the anticipatory bail granted to a former judicial officer.
Investigation Entering Crucial Phase
With the CBI expected to take over the probe formally and the state pressing for cancellation of anticipatory bail, the investigation appears to be entering its most critical phase so far.
Legal experts believe the High Court’s decision on the state’s plea could significantly influence:
- The direction of the investigation
- Custodial interrogation possibilities
- Preservation of evidence
- Public confidence in the fairness of the probe
For Twisha Sharma’s family, however, the legal battle continues to remain deeply personal.
They maintain that their only demand is a transparent, independent and uncompromised investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of their daughter.
