UP Cabinet Approves Renaming of Shahjahanpur’s Jalalabad to Parashurampuri, Yogi Government Continues Name Change Drive
Uttar Pradesh is set to witness another significant name change, with the Yogi Adityanath-led government approving the renaming of Jalalabad town in Shahjahanpur district as Parashurampuri.
The decision was cleared during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, marking another step in the state’s ongoing initiative to restore names linked to India’s cultural and religious heritage.
Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said residents had been demanding the change for several years.
According to him, the proposal was backed by the town’s deep historical roots and religious importance, making the renaming a long-awaited move for the local population.
Historically, Jalalabad derives its name from the Mughal era and is believed to have been named after Emperor Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar.
However, the town also holds special significance in Hindu traditions, as it is widely regarded as the birthplace of Lord Parashuram, the revered warrior-sage and sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
References to the site are found in several Hindu scriptures and mythological narratives, strengthening its religious identity.
Khanna, who represents Shahjahanpur in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, said the proposal moved forward after the Central Government informed the state that it had no objection to the renaming.
Following this clearance, the Cabinet formally approved changing the town’s name from Jalalabad to Parashurampuri.
The minister further explained that the concerned government departments will now complete all legal and administrative procedures required for implementing the decision.
Once these formalities are concluded, the new name will be incorporated into official records, government documents, departmental files, and every other statutory record as per the prescribed rules.
Since assuming office, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has overseen the renaming of several towns, districts and public institutions across Uttar Pradesh, particularly those associated with the Mughal period.
The government has maintained that these decisions are intended to revive places with historical, cultural,l and spiritual significance rooted in Indian civilisation.
The renaming exercise has gathered momentum over the past few years. In 2024, the Chief Minister proposed changing the name of Mustafabad village in Lakhimpur Kheri district to Kabir Dham, citing the presence of a renowned ashram dedicated to Saint Kabir.
Earlier, in December 2018, Allahabad officially became Prayagraj, restoring the city’s ancient identity linked to the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers.
The Uttar Pradesh government also approved renaming Faizabad district as Ayodhya in 2018, recognising its identity as the birthplace of Lord Ram.
Similarly, Mughalsarai town and its famous railway junction were renamed Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar and Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction after receiving approval from the Central Government.
Continuing the same policy, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced in June 2025 that the Akbarpur Bus Stand in Ambedkar Nagar district would be renamed Shravan Dham Bus Stand.
The Chief Minister described the move as a tribute to Shravan Kumar, whose devotion towards his parents is celebrated in the Ramayana and continues to inspire generations.
उत्तर प्रदेश में एक और ऐतिहासिक नाम परिवर्तन का रास्ता साफ हो गया है। मुख्यमंत्री योगी आदित्यनाथ की अध्यक्षता में हुई कैबिनेट बैठक में शाहजहांपुर जिले के जलालाबाद नगर का नाम बदलकर परशुरामपुरी करने के प्रस्ताव को मंजूरी दे दी गई।
राज्य सरकार का कहना है कि यह निर्णय प्रदेश की सांस्कृतिक और धार्मिक विरासत से जुड़े प्राचीन स्थलों की पहचान को पुनर्स्थापित करने की दिशा में एक महत्वपूर्ण कदम है।
कैबिनेट बैठक के बाद पत्रकारों से बातचीत करते हुए प्रदेश के वित्त मंत्री सुरेश कुमार खन्ना ने बताया कि जलालाबाद के लोगों की यह मांग कई वर्षों से लंबित थी। उनके अनुसार, नगर की ऐतिहासिक पृष्ठभूमि और धार्मिक महत्व को देखते हुए स्थानीय नागरिक लंबे समय से इसका नाम बदलकर परशुरामपुरी किए जाने की मांग उठा रहे थे।
इतिहास के अनुसार, जलालाबाद का नाम मुगल काल में सम्राट जलाल-उद-दीन मोहम्मद अकबर के नाम पर पड़ा था। वहीं हिंदू धार्मिक मान्यताओं में इस स्थान का विशेष महत्व है, क्योंकि इसे भगवान विष्णु के छठे अवतार और महान योद्धा ऋषि भगवान परशुराम की जन्मस्थली माना जाता है।
अनेक पौराणिक ग्रंथों और धार्मिक कथाओं में भी इस क्षेत्र का उल्लेख मिलता है, जिससे इसकी आध्यात्मिक पहचान और अधिक मजबूत होती है।
शाहजहांपुर से विधायक सुरेश कुमार खन्ना ने बताया कि केंद्र सरकार की ओर से प्रस्ताव पर कोई आपत्ति न जताए जाने के बाद राज्य मंत्रिमंडल ने औपचारिक रूप से जलालाबाद का नाम बदलकर परशुरामपुरी करने को स्वीकृति प्रदान कर दी।
उन्होंने कहा कि इससे क्षेत्र की ऐतिहासिक और धार्मिक पहचान को नई मान्यता मिलेगी।
उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि अब संबंधित विभाग नाम परिवर्तन से जुड़ी सभी कानूनी और प्रशासनिक प्रक्रियाएं पूरी करेंगे। निर्धारित प्रक्रिया पूरी होने के बाद नगर का नया नाम सरकारी अभिलेखों, विभागीय दस्तावेजों, राजस्व रिकॉर्ड और अन्य सभी आधिकारिक रिकॉर्ड में दर्ज किया जाएगा।
मुख्यमंत्री योगी आदित्यनाथ के कार्यकाल में उत्तर प्रदेश के कई शहरों, जिलों और सार्वजनिक स्थलों के नाम बदले जा चुके हैं। विशेष रूप से मुगलकालीन नामों वाले स्थानों को उनकी सांस्कृतिक, ऐतिहासिक और धार्मिक पहचान के अनुरूप नया नाम देने की प्रक्रिया लगातार जारी है। राज्य सरकार का कहना है कि इसका उद्देश्य भारतीय सभ्यता और परंपराओं से जुड़े मूल स्वरूप को सम्मान देना है।
पिछले कुछ वर्षों में इस दिशा में कई महत्वपूर्ण फैसले लिए गए हैं। वर्ष 2024 में मुख्यमंत्री ने लखीमपुर खीरी जिले के मुस्तफाबाद गांव का नाम बदलकर कबीर धाम करने का प्रस्ताव रखा था, क्योंकि वहां संत कबीर के नाम से प्रसिद्ध एक आश्रम स्थित है।
इससे पहले दिसंबर 2018 में इलाहाबाद का आधिकारिक नाम बदलकर प्रयागराज कर दिया गया था, जिससे गंगा, यमुना और पौराणिक सरस्वती के संगम से जुड़ी उसकी प्राचीन पहचान को पुनर्जीवित किया गया।
इसी वर्ष प्रदेश सरकार ने फैजाबाद जिले का नाम बदलकर अयोध्या करने का भी निर्णय लिया था। वहीं केंद्र सरकार की मंजूरी के बाद मुगलसराय नगर और उसके प्रमुख रेलवे जंक्शन का नाम क्रमशः पंडित दीनदयाल उपाध्याय नगर और पंडित दीनदयाल उपाध्याय जंक्शन रखा गया, ताकि महान जनसंघ नेता की स्मृति को सम्मान दिया जा सके।
इसी क्रम को आगे बढ़ाते हुए जून 2025 में मुख्यमंत्री योगी आदित्यनाथ ने अंबेडकर नगर जिले के अकबरपुर बस स्टैंड का नाम बदलकर श्रवण धाम बस स्टैंड करने की घोषणा की थी। उन्होंने कहा था कि यह निर्णय रामायण के आदर्श पात्र श्रवण कुमार की मातृ-पितृ भक्ति और भारतीय सांस्कृतिक मूल्यों को सम्मान देने के उद्देश्य से लिया गया है।
