UP Congress Chief Ajay Rai Backs Rahul Gandhi, Launches Sharp Attack on PM Modi and BJP Over Economy and Governance
Lucknow: Ajay Rai on Thursday strongly defended remarks made by Rahul Gandhi and launched a fierce political attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Addressing the media at the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee office in Lucknow, Ajay Rai accused the BJP leadership of misleading the people of the country and failing to protect public interests despite being in power for over a decade.
The Congress leader also alleged that the central government had pushed ordinary citizens into economic distress while prioritising optics and publicity over real governance issues.
Ajay Rai Defends Rahul Gandhi’s Remarks
Ajay Rai’s comments came in support of Rahul Gandhi’s recent statements targeting the BJP-led central government over economic management, unemployment and governance.
Backing the Congress MP, Rai said the opposition was only raising issues that directly affect ordinary Indians.
He claimed that inflation, unemployment and rising financial pressure on households had become major concerns across the country and accused the ruling dispensation of ignoring these realities.
According to Rai, the BJP leadership has repeatedly attempted to divert attention from core economic issues through political messaging and media campaigns.
Congress Alleges Public Interests Being Compromised
During the press interaction, Ajay Rai accused the government of compromising the interests and security of Indian citizens.
Without elaborating on specific instances, he alleged that national interests were being “mortgaged into foreign hands,” a statement clearly aimed at questioning the government’s economic and strategic policies.
The Congress leader also claimed he possessed evidence to support his accusations.
His remarks reflected the increasingly aggressive tone being adopted by opposition parties ahead of key political battles and future elections.
BJP and RSS Have ‘Old History’: Ajay Rai
In one of his sharpest political attacks, Ajay Rai alleged that both the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh had a long history of “betrayal” and political manipulation.
He referred to past political events while attempting to portray the ruling party as opportunistic and power-driven.
Rai also revisited the 2014 Lok Sabha election, claiming that efforts had been made to politically “buy” him during that period.
According to him, when such attempts failed, political strategies were adopted to weaken opposition candidates in Varanasi.
Reference to Arvind Kejriwal and Varanasi Election
Ajay Rai specifically referred to the 2014 parliamentary election in Varanasi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi contested from the constituency.
Rai claimed that after failing to influence him politically, his opponents brought Arvind Kejriwal into the Varanasi contest.
According to Rai, the episode reflected what he described as the BJP’s political style and character.
The 2014 Varanasi election had attracted national attention because of the high-profile contest involving Narendra Modi, Arvind Kejriwal and other political figures.
Congress Targets Government Over Economy
Ajay Rai repeatedly returned to the issue of the economy during his address.
He accused the central government of pushing the country into economic hardship over the past decade.
According to the Congress leader:
- Rising inflation has hurt ordinary families
- Fuel prices continue to affect household budgets
- Economic inequality has widened
- Unemployment remains a serious challenge
He argued that despite these concerns, the government was more focused on image-building than addressing real economic distress.
Swipe at PM Modi’s Public Outreach Style
In a sarcastic remark aimed at Prime Minister Modi’s public communication style, Ajay Rai criticised what he called the government’s focus on “reels and publicity.”
Referring indirectly to viral videos and public campaigns associated with the Prime Minister, Rai alleged that while citizens struggle with financial pressures, the leadership remains occupied with optics.
He also mocked what he described as moral lessons being given to citizens regarding spending habits.
According to Rai, ordinary people are being told to limit expenditures on items such as:
- Gold
- Petrol and diesel
- Foreign travel
While he alleged, political leaders themselves continue travelling abroad and projecting an image disconnected from public hardships.
Opposition Intensifying Economic Narrative
Ajay Rai’s comments reflect the broader strategy of opposition parties to centre political discourse around economic concerns ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
Issues such as:
- Inflation
- Cost of living
- Youth unemployment
- Fuel prices
- Economic inequality
have increasingly become focal points of opposition criticism against the BJP-led government.
Congress leaders have repeatedly argued that economic stress among middle-class and lower-income families remains one of the country’s most pressing challenges.
BJP Yet to Respond Officially
As of now, there has been no immediate detailed response from the BJP regarding Ajay Rai’s latest remarks.
However, BJP leaders have consistently defended the Modi government’s economic record by pointing to:
- Infrastructure growth
- Welfare schemes
- Digital reforms
- Manufacturing expansion
- India’s global economic standing
The ruling party has also often accused the opposition of spreading negative narratives for political purposes.
Political Temperatures Rising in Uttar Pradesh
The exchange highlights the intensifying political atmosphere in Uttar Pradesh, which remains India’s most politically significant state.
With both national and regional parties preparing for future electoral battles, political rhetoric between the BJP and opposition parties has become increasingly sharp.
Ajay Rai, who has often been vocal in attacking the BJP leadership, appears to be positioning the Congress more aggressively in Uttar Pradesh politics.
Bigger Political Message Behind the Remarks
Beyond the immediate controversy, Ajay Rai’s statements reflect a larger political attempt by the Congress to frame the national debate around governance, economic stress and accountability.
By backing Rahul Gandhi’s criticism and directly targeting Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, the Congress leadership appears intent on consolidating opposition narratives against the ruling party.
At the same time, the BJP continues to project its governance record, welfare delivery and development agenda as evidence of political stability and leadership strength.
As political campaigning intensifies in the coming months, confrontational exchanges of this nature are likely to become even more frequent across India’s political landscape.
