UP Police Bust Alleged Inter-State Cattle Smuggling Network, Probe ₹80–100 Crore Money Trail
Sonbhadra (Uttar Pradesh): Uttar Pradesh Police has claimed to have dismantled a well-organised inter-state network allegedly engaged in the illegal transportation of cows from different parts of the state to West Bengal through Bihar for slaughter.
Investigators have arrested another suspected member of the syndicate while simultaneously uncovering a financial trail running into nearly ₹80–100 crore, officials said.
The latest breakthrough came with the arrest of Raja Qureshi, a resident of Hooghly district in West Bengal. Police produced him before a local court on Saturday.
With this arrest, the total number of accused taken into custody in the case has risen to 11.
According to investigators, the remaining arrested suspects belong to Sonbhadra and Mirzapur districts of Uttar Pradesh, besides several locations in Bihar.
Providing details of the investigation, Sonbhadra Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar said the probe began a few months ago after police intercepted a vehicle transporting cattle illegally.
Subsequent raids in different parts of the district led to the rescue of more animals, prompting investigators to trace what they suspected was a larger organised network operating across multiple states.
As the investigation progressed, police claimed to have uncovered an extensive syndicate allegedly involved in systematic cattle smuggling.
Officials said the network had adopted a structured mechanism for transporting animals as well as handling financial transactions linked to the alleged illegal trade.
According to investigators, the money generated through the alleged smuggling operations was not transferred directly to key members of the network.
Instead, the funds were routed through multiple personal and business bank accounts in an attempt to disguise their origin and make the transactions appear legitimate.
Police said they examined at least 25 bank accounts, which together reflected transactions estimated at ₹80–100 crore over the past few years.
Detailed scrutiny of financial records began after the arrest of Rishu Yadav alias Vikas Yadav from Sonbhadra.
Officials claimed the analysis revealed a layered financial network designed to obscure the movement of funds.
Earlier in the investigation, police had also arrested Vikas Yadav and Bhagwan Yadav, who are alleged to be linked to the network.
Investigators believe the arrests have helped them piece together the operational structure of the alleged smuggling racket.
The probe further indicated that a substantial amount of cash connected with the alleged cattle transportation was deposited from the Pandua and Memari areas of West Bengal.
Investigators are examining whether these locations served as major financial collection points for the network.
Officials alleged that Raja Qureshi, a resident of Pandua in Hooghly district, deposited amounts of ₹49,000 and ₹99,000 into the bank accounts of Furkan Traders, Chanda Traders, as well as accounts belonging to Sheikh Sultan Ali and Mohammad Aminuddin, residents of Khurramabad and Bhabua in Bihar.
Investigators further claimed that a significant portion of the money was subsequently withdrawn in instalments of ₹20,000 through ATM and UPI transactions by Guddu alias Shamshad Qureshi of Khurramabad and Afzal Qureshi and Shehzad Qureshi from Chainpur and Bhabua districts of Bihar.
The financial investigation also pointed towards transactions routed through the Common Service Centre (CSC) account of Sandeep Singh.
Police alleged that funds passing through this account eventually reached Rishu Yadav, Vikas Yadav, and other alleged members of the local cattle smuggling network.
Investigators said deposits into Sandeep Singh’s account originated from bank accounts operated by Sheikh Furkan Ali, Mohammad Aminuddin, and Sheikh Sultan Ali, while alleging that many of these transactions were initiated by Raja Qureshi.
Analysis of banking records further revealed repeated high-value transactions conducted through several Common Service Centre accounts.
According to police, these accounts were allegedly used to make large financial movements appear as routine commercial transactions, thereby concealing the actual source of funds and the identities of the intended beneficiaries.
During the course of the investigation, officials claimed the role of Chanda Traders, Furkan Traders, and multiple CSC accounts emerged prominently.
Police alleged that after funds were routed through these entities, substantial amounts were either withdrawn in cash or transferred to individual bank accounts to avoid detection.
According to police, Raja Qureshi told investigators during questioning that six to eight bovines were initially transported in small vehicles from Sonbhadra to Mirzapur and Varanasi.
From there, the animals were allegedly shifted to large containers carrying between 50 and 80 bovines from the Chainpur and Khurramabad areas of Bihar before being moved further.
Police said the investigation into the alleged interstate network is continuing.
