Uttar Pradesh has opened the door to free public bus travel for women above the age of 60, with the state Cabinet approving a new concession aimed at reducing the financial burden of daily commuting for senior citizens.
The decision was cleared at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday.
Under the new arrangement, eligible women will be able to travel without paying fares on ordinary buses operated by the state road transport system.
The government has presented the initiative as both a welfare measure and an effort to make mobility easier for elderly women.
Senior citizens who depend on buses for medical visits, family responsibilities, religious journeys or other routine travel are expected to benefit from the scheme.
Officials estimate that nearly 88,438 women could use the facility on an average day.
The move is expected to have a monthly financial implication of around Rs 22.50 crore for the state government.
To implement the scheme, the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation will provide special smart cards to eligible beneficiaries.
The cards are intended to simplify verification and help ensure that the free-travel benefit is available to the women covered under the policy.
The use of smart cards is also expected to make the programme easier to administer by creating a system through which eligible passengers can be identified during travel.
Until now, Uttar Pradesh has generally offered women free travel on state transport buses on special occasions such as Raksha Bandhan.
The latest Cabinet decision extends the concept of fare-free travel beyond a single festive day for a specific group of senior women.
The announcement comes as political parties in Uttar Pradesh begin preparing for the next Assembly elections, which are due in less than a year.
The scheme adds to a series of welfare-focused decisions aimed at women and other key sections of the electorate.
For thousands of elderly women who rely on public transport, however, the practical significance of the decision could be more immediate.
The removal of bus fares may allow them to travel more frequently and independently without having to factor the cost of every journey into their daily expenses.
