Uttar Pradesh Braces for Fresh Heatwave as Monsoon Remains Delayed, Says IMD

With the Southwest Monsoon yet to enter Uttar Pradesh, the state is set to endure another spell of intense heat in the coming days, with temperatures continuing to climb across several districts, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The weather department’s report released on Tuesday indicated a sharp increase in daytime temperatures, particularly in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Banda recorded a maximum temperature of 43.4 degrees Celsius on Monday, while Prayagraj touched 44°C, placing both cities among the hottest locations in the country.

Meteorologists attributed the soaring temperatures to the absence of substantial cloud cover over the region.

IMD scientist Atul Kumar Singh said there is currently no major weather system affecting Uttar Pradesh.

In the absence of dense cloud formation, direct solar radiation is significantly heating the land surface, causing temperatures to rise steadily.

He explained that southern and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh typically experience extremely high temperatures during this time of year because the region lies within one of India’s peak heating zones when the sun is positioned close to the Tropic of Cancer.

According to Singh, prevailing atmospheric conditions are not conducive to the further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into Uttar Pradesh.

“At present, there are no favourable conditions for the monsoon to progress into the state over the next four to five days.

Any rainfall that occurs during this period is likely to be triggered by localised heating, atmospheric instability or western disturbances and should not be considered monsoonal rainfall,” he said.

The IMD has predicted isolated spells of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds at a few places across both western and eastern Uttar Pradesh until June 18.

However, from June 19 onwards, heatwave conditions are expected to return in isolated pockets of the state.

The scientist added that although some localised thunderstorm activity may occur, especially in parts of southern Uttar Pradesh, it is unlikely to provide significant or widespread relief from the prevailing heat.

“There may be a few areas receiving light rainfall or thunderstorms, but these will be local weather developments and not part of any large-scale system.

Overall, weather conditions are expected to remain broadly unchanged over the next few days,” Singh said.

He further noted that rainfall activity could increase in parts of the northern Terai region after five to six days.

However, any assessment regarding the arrival and advancement of the monsoon in Uttar Pradesh will depend on how atmospheric conditions evolve in the coming days.
