Uttar Pradesh Plans Indigenous Weather Satellite, Launches Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow
UP Eyes Its Own Weather Satellite to Strengthen Forecasting and Disaster Preparedness
Uttar Pradesh is preparing to take a major leap in weather monitoring and climate forecasting by exploring the development of its own weather satellite.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the state government is keen to build advanced capabilities that would enable more accurate weather predictions and timely access to critical meteorological information.
He noted that a dedicated satellite could significantly enhance the state’s ability to monitor changing weather conditions and respond effectively to natural disasters.
The state is expected to seek technical guidance and support from leading scientific institutions, including the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), to turn the vision into reality.
Regional Meteorological Centre Inaugurated in Lucknow
The Chief Minister made these remarks while inaugurating the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow.
The event was attended by senior officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), scientific experts, and state government representatives.
Speaking at the inauguration, he highlighted the growing importance of weather science in protecting lives, supporting agriculture, and strengthening disaster management systems.
He emphasised that accurate forecasting has become a crucial tool for governments in an era of increasingly unpredictable climate patterns.
Technology Helping Save Lives Through Early Warnings
The Chief Minister pointed out that advances in meteorological technology have substantially improved the accuracy of weather forecasts in recent years.
As a result, people now receive timely alerts on their mobile phones about storms, heavy rainfall, heatwaves, and other extreme weather events.
He cited examples from across the country where early warning systems have enabled authorities to move people to safer locations before disasters strike, significantly reducing casualties and property damage.
Better Coordination Between Science and Governance
According to Yogi Adityanath, scientific data and real-time weather monitoring play a vital role in policymaking and emergency response.
He stressed that stronger coordination between meteorological agencies and government departments can improve preparedness and ensure quicker responses during crises.
The newly inaugurated centre is expected to strengthen regional forecasting capabilities and provide more localised weather information for Uttar Pradesh and surrounding areas.
Education and Welfare Remain Government Priorities
During his address, the Chief Minister also spoke about broader governance issues, including education and public welfare.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that financial hardships do not prevent students from pursuing higher education.
He stated that deserving students would continue to receive support and that strict action would be taken against individuals involved in irregularities or unlawful activities affecting public welfare schemes.
Public Grievances to Receive Greater Attention
The Chief Minister urged officials to remain responsive to citizens’ concerns and emphasised the importance of resolving public grievances promptly.
He directed administrative officers to ensure that complaints received through public outreach programmes are addressed efficiently and transparently.
He added that governance should remain focused on delivering services effectively while maintaining accountability at every level of administration.
New Opportunities in Textile and Handicraft Sectors
The Chief Minister also highlighted the state’s efforts to expand employment and self-employment opportunities through the development of the textile and handicraft industries.
He said the government is working to create an ecosystem that supports entrepreneurs, artisans, and small businesses.
By linking producers with financial assistance, modern technology, and larger markets, the state aims to strengthen traditional industries while generating sustainable livelihoods for thousands of people.
Strengthening UP’s Future Through Science and Innovation
The launch of the Regional Meteorological Centre marks another step in Uttar Pradesh’s efforts to modernise its scientific infrastructure.
Combined with the ambitious proposal to develop a state weather satellite, the initiative reflects a broader focus on technology-driven governance, disaster resilience, and economic growth.
Officials believe that enhanced forecasting capabilities will not only improve public safety but also support agriculture, infrastructure planning, and long-term climate adaptation strategies across the state.
