Venezuela Earthquake: Thousands Still Missing as Death Toll Climbs; India Launches Major Humanitarian Relief Mission
Days after a devastating earthquake struck Venezuela, thousands of people are still unaccounted for as rescue teams continue searching through the rubble in the worst-hit areas.
The powerful tremor has left widespread destruction, with collapsed buildings, damaged roads and shattered neighbourhoods making rescue operations extremely challenging.
According to the latest official figures released by the country’s disaster management authorities, the death toll has risen to 920, while 3,360 people have been injured.
Emergency response teams fear that the number of casualties could increase further as many victims are believed to be trapped beneath collapsed structures.
Health Minister Carlos Alvarado said hospitals across the affected regions have treated more than 235 people who were rescued alive after spending several days beneath the debris.
Despite these successful rescues, officials have warned that hopes of finding more survivors are fading with every passing hour.
In several northern Venezuelan cities, anxious families have gathered near the ruins of collapsed buildings, desperately waiting for news about missing loved ones.
Rescue workers, aided by heavy machinery, sniffer dogs and specialised equipment, continue to remove debris in an effort to locate survivors and recover bodies.
The Venezuelan government has intensified relief and rehabilitation efforts, while emergency shelters, food supplies and medical assistance are being provided to thousands of displaced families.
Authorities have appealed for international support as the scale of destruction continues to emerge.
India Extends Helping Hand
Responding to Venezuela’s humanitarian crisis, India has launched Operation Amitaabh to assist earthquake-affected communities.
The relief mission focuses on providing emergency medical support and humanitarian aid to those impacted by the disaster.
As part of the operation, India has dispatched the first batch of a specialised medical team to Venezuela.
The contingent includes 41 members, who have been deployed to establish emergency healthcare services and support local authorities in treating the injured.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that India remains committed to standing with Venezuela during this difficult period and will continue extending assistance wherever required.
Officials described the mission as a reflection of India’s long-standing commitment to humanitarian relief during global emergencies.

वेनेजुएला में आए भीषण भूकंप के कई दिन बाद भी हालात सामान्य नहीं हो पाए हैं। राहत एवं बचाव दल लगातार मलबे में फंसे लोगों की तलाश में जुटे हैं, जबकि हजारों लोगों का अब तक कोई सुराग नहीं मिल पाया है।
शक्तिशाली भूकंप ने कई शहरों में भारी तबाही मचाई है। इमारतें ढह गईं, सड़कें क्षतिग्रस्त हो गईं और कई रिहायशी इलाके पूरी तरह खंडहर में तब्दील हो चुके हैं, जिससे बचाव अभियान बेहद चुनौतीपूर्ण बना हुआ है।
देश की आपदा प्रबंधन एजेंसियों द्वारा जारी ताजा आंकड़ों के अनुसार, इस प्राकृतिक आपदा में अब तक 920 लोगों की मौत हो चुकी है, जबकि 3,360 लोग घायल हुए हैं। अधिकारियों का कहना है कि मलबे के नीचे अब भी बड़ी संख्या में लोगों के दबे होने की आशंका है, इसलिए मृतकों की संख्या आगे बढ़ सकती है।
स्वास्थ्य मंत्री कार्लोस अल्वाराडो ने बताया कि प्रभावित इलाकों के अस्पतालों में अब तक 235 से अधिक लोगों का उपचार किया गया है, जिन्हें कई दिनों बाद मलबे से जीवित निकाला गया। हालांकि उन्होंने यह भी स्वीकार किया कि समय बीतने के साथ जीवित लोगों के मिलने की उम्मीद लगातार कम होती जा रही है।
उत्तरी वेनेजुएला के कई शहरों में लोग अपने परिजनों की तलाश में ढही हुई इमारतों के आसपास डटे हुए हैं। बचाव दल भारी मशीनों, खोजी कुत्तों और आधुनिक उपकरणों की मदद से मलबा हटाकर लापता लोगों को खोजने और मृतकों के शव निकालने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं।
वेनेजुएला सरकार ने राहत एवं पुनर्वास कार्यों को तेज कर दिया है। प्रभावित परिवारों के लिए अस्थायी शिविर, भोजन, पेयजल और चिकित्सा सुविधाएं उपलब्ध कराई जा रही हैं। साथ ही, बढ़ती मानवीय जरूरतों को देखते हुए अंतरराष्ट्रीय समुदाय से भी सहयोग की अपील की गई है।
मानवीय संकट में भारत बना सहारा
वेनेजुएला में आई इस विनाशकारी आपदा के बाद भारत ने मानवीय सहायता के तहत ‘ऑपरेशन अमिताभ’ शुरू किया है। इस अभियान का उद्देश्य भूकंप प्रभावित लोगों को त्वरित चिकित्सा सहायता और आवश्यक राहत सामग्री उपलब्ध कराना है।
इस मिशन के तहत भारत ने विशेषज्ञ चिकित्सकों और स्वास्थ्यकर्मियों की पहली टीम वेनेजुएला के लिए रवाना की है। इस दल में 41 सदस्य शामिल हैं, जो स्थानीय प्रशासन के साथ मिलकर आपातकालीन चिकित्सा सेवाएं उपलब्ध कराएंगे और घायलों के इलाज में सहयोग करेंगे।
विदेश मंत्रालय (एमईए) ने कहा कि भारत इस कठिन समय में वेनेजुएला के साथ मजबूती से खड़ा है और आवश्यकता पड़ने पर हर संभव मानवीय सहायता उपलब्ध कराता रहेगा। मंत्रालय के अनुसार, यह राहत अभियान वैश्विक आपदाओं के दौरान मानवता के प्रति भारत की प्रतिबद्धता और सहयोग की भावना का प्रतीक है।
