Viral Video Highlights Hidden Cost of Railway Linen Theft: AC Coach Attendant Says Missing Items Are Deducted From Salary

New Delhi: A viral social media video has drawn attention to an often-overlooked problem faced by Indian Railways employees, with an onboard attendant claiming that the cost of bedsheets, blankets and towels taken away by passengers is recovered from the salaries of staff responsible for distributing them.

For lakhs of passengers travelling in air-conditioned coaches, the linen kit provided during the journey is considered a routine onboard facility.

While the overwhelming majority return the bedsheets, blankets, and towels before leaving the train, a small number of travellers allegedly carry these items home, unaware that the financial burden may ultimately fall on railway employees.

The issue gained widespread attention after YouTuber Naveen Singh shared an Instagram video featuring railway attendant Amit Yadav.

Along with the clip, Singh appealed to the public to spare a thought for frontline workers, writing, “Thoda in logo ka bhi soche” (Think about them too).

Speaking in the video, Amit Yadav said he earns a monthly salary of around ₹14,000.

His daily responsibility includes distributing linen kits to passengers travelling in AC coaches and ensuring that every bedsheet, blanket, and towel is collected before the train completes its journey.

Yadav alleged that not all passengers return the linen issued to them. According to him, whenever items go missing, the value of those articles is deducted from the attendant’s wages.

He claimed that the recovery amounts are approximately ₹60 for a towel, ₹250 for a bedsheet, and ₹700 for a blanket.

For employees earning modest salaries, even a handful of missing items can substantially reduce their monthly income.

Recalling one particularly difficult experience, Yadav said he was once required to pay nearly ₹5,000 from his own earnings after several linen articles disappeared during a single train journey.

The incident, he said, made him far more vigilant while performing his duties. However, despite increased caution, preventing such losses continues to be a major challenge.

The viral video has sparked discussion on social media, with many users urging passengers to act responsibly and return railway property after every journey.

Several people also called for stronger monitoring mechanisms to protect frontline employees from bearing the financial consequences of theft allegedly committed by others.

नई दिल्ली: सोशल मीडिया पर तेजी से वायरल हो रहे एक वीडियो ने भारतीय रेलवे के कर्मचारियों की उस परेशानी को सामने ला दिया है, जिस पर आमतौर पर बहुत कम ध्यान दिया जाता है।

वीडियो में एक रेलवे अटेंडेंट ने दावा किया है कि यदि एसी कोच में यात्रियों को दिए गए बेडशीट, कंबल या तौलिये वापस नहीं मिलते, तो उनकी कीमत उसके वेतन से वसूल ली जाती है।

भारतीय रेलवे की वातानुकूलित बोगियों में सफर करने वाले अधिकांश यात्रियों के लिए यात्रा के दौरान मिलने वाला लिनेन किट सामान्य सुविधा का हिस्सा होता है।

अधिकांश यात्री यात्रा समाप्त होने से पहले बेडशीट, कंबल और तौलिये लौटा देते हैं, लेकिन कुछ लोग इन्हें अपने साथ ले जाते हैं।

ऐसे मामलों में कथित तौर पर नुकसान की भरपाई उन कर्मचारियों को करनी पड़ती है, जिनकी जिम्मेदारी इन वस्तुओं का वितरण और संग्रह करना होती है।

यह मामला तब चर्चा में आया जब यूट्यूबर नवीन सिंह ने रेलवे कर्मचारी अमित यादव का एक वीडियो इंस्टाग्राम पर साझा किया।

वीडियो के साथ उन्होंने लोगों से रेलवे कर्मचारियों की कठिनाइयों को समझने की अपील करते हुए लिखा, “थोड़ा इन लोगों का भी सोचें।”

वीडियो में अमित यादव बताते हैं कि उन्हें लगभग ₹14,000 प्रतिमाह वेतन मिलता है। उनकी ड्यूटी एसी कोच के यात्रियों को लिनेन किट उपलब्ध कराना और ट्रेन के अंतिम स्टेशन पहुंचने से पहले सभी बेडशीट, कंबल तथा तौलिये वापस एकत्र करना है।

अमित का दावा है कि कई बार यात्रियों द्वारा सभी सामान वापस नहीं किया जाता। ऐसी स्थिति में गायब वस्तुओं की कीमत कर्मचारियों के वेतन से काट ली जाती है।

उनके अनुसार, एक तौलिया गायब होने पर लगभग ₹60, बेडशीट पर ₹250 और कंबल पर ₹700 की कटौती की जाती है। सीमित आय वाले कर्मचारियों के लिए कुछ वस्तुओं का भी गायब होना मासिक वेतन पर भारी असर डाल सकता है।

अपना अनुभव साझा करते हुए अमित ने बताया कि एक बार एक ही यात्रा के दौरान कई लिनेन सामग्री गायब हो गई थी, जिसके कारण उन्हें अपनी जेब से करीब ₹5,000 का भुगतान करना पड़ा।

इस घटना के बाद उन्होंने काम के दौरान अधिक सतर्क रहना शुरू किया, लेकिन उनका कहना है कि सभी यात्रियों पर नजर रखना और ऐसी घटनाओं को पूरी तरह रोक पाना आज भी बेहद कठिन है।

वीडियो के सामने आने के बाद सोशल मीडिया पर इस मुद्दे को लेकर व्यापक चर्चा शुरू हो गई है। अनेक लोगों ने यात्रियों से रेलवे की संपत्ति को सुरक्षित रखने और यात्रा समाप्त होने पर सभी लिनेन सामग्री लौटाने की अपील की है।

वहीं, कई लोगों ने यह भी सुझाव दिया कि रेलवे को ऐसी व्यवस्था विकसित करनी चाहिए जिससे ईमानदारी से काम करने वाले कर्मचारियों को दूसरों की कथित लापरवाही या चोरी का आर्थिक नुकसान न उठाना पड़े।
