Woman Held With ₹7.11 Crore Worth of Suspected Bangladeshi Gold on Delhi-Bound Train in UP; DRI Busts Smuggling Network
A major gold smuggling operation was unearthed by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) after officials intercepted a woman passenger travelling to Delhi and recovered nearly five kilograms of suspected smuggled gold valued at around ₹7.11 crore.
The seizure was made aboard the Brahmaputra Express at Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction in Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli district.
According to senior DRI officials, specific intelligence inputs had indicated that a female courier carrying a large consignment of illegally imported gold was travelling from Cooch Behar in West Bengal to the national capital.
Acting on the information, a DRI team boarded the train and identified the suspect in an air-conditioned coach soon after the train arrived at the Chandauli railway station.
During the operation, a woman officer conducted a personal search of the passenger and discovered 13 foreign-origin gold bars, weighing approximately 1.5 kg, carefully concealed inside a specially stitched cloth belt worn around her waist.
A further examination of her handbag led to the recovery of another 29 gold bars weighing about 3.48 kg.
Altogether, officials seized 42 gold bars with a combined weight of 4.98 kg under the provisions of the Customs Act.
Following her detention on Wednesday night, the accused was formally taken into custody on Thursday under the Customs Act.
She was produced before the Special Chief Judicial Magistrate in Varanasi on Friday, where the court remanded her to 14 days of judicial custody for further investigation.
Investigators claimed that during questioning, the woman admitted to working as a regular courier for a cross-border gold smuggling racket.
According to officials, the consignment had allegedly been smuggled into India from Bangladesh through West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district and was meant for delivery to separate receivers in Varanasi and Delhi.
The DRI believes the seizure has exposed a wider organised smuggling syndicate and said efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other members believed to be linked to the network.

सीमा पार से सोने की तस्करी के एक बड़े मामले का पर्दाफाश करते हुए राजस्व खुफिया निदेशालय (डीआरआई) ने दिल्ली जा रही एक महिला यात्री को गिरफ्तार कर उसके कब्जे से लगभग 4.98 किलोग्राम विदेशी मूल का सोना बरामद किया है।
बरामद सोने की अनुमानित कीमत करीब ₹7.11 करोड़ बताई गई है। कार्रवाई उत्तर प्रदेश के चंदौली जिले स्थित पंडित दीनदयाल उपाध्याय जंक्शन पर की गई।
डीआरआई के वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों के अनुसार, एजेंसी को विश्वसनीय सूचना मिली थी कि पश्चिम बंगाल के कूचबिहार से ब्रह्मपुत्र एक्सप्रेस के जरिए दिल्ली जा रही एक महिला बड़ी मात्रा में तस्करी का सोना लेकर यात्रा कर रही है।
सूचना के आधार पर गठित टीम ने ट्रेन के स्टेशन पहुंचते ही वातानुकूलित कोच में महिला की पहचान कर उसे रोक लिया।
तलाशी की प्रक्रिया महिला अधिकारी की मौजूदगी में कराई गई। जांच के दौरान महिला की कमर पर बंधी विशेष कपड़े की बेल्ट में छिपाकर रखी गई 13 सोने की ईंटें बरामद हुईं, जिनका वजन लगभग 1.5 किलोग्राम था।
इसके बाद उसके हैंडबैग की तलाशी लेने पर 29 और विदेशी मूल की सोने की ईंटें मिलीं, जिनका वजन करीब 3.48 किलोग्राम निकला।
इस तरह कुल 42 सोने की ईंटें, जिनका संयुक्त वजन 4.98 किलोग्राम है, सीमा शुल्क अधिनियम के तहत जब्त कर ली गईं।
महिला को बुधवार देर रात हिरासत में लिया गया था, जबकि गुरुवार को सीमा शुल्क अधिनियम के प्रावधानों के तहत औपचारिक रूप से गिरफ्तार किया गया।
शुक्रवार को उसे वाराणसी की विशेष मुख्य न्यायिक मजिस्ट्रेट अदालत में पेश किया गया, जहां अदालत ने उसे 14 दिन की न्यायिक हिरासत में भेज दिया।
पूछताछ के दौरान महिला ने कथित रूप से स्वीकार किया कि वह लंबे समय से सोने की तस्करी करने वाले गिरोह के लिए कैरियर का काम कर रही थी।
अधिकारियों का दावा है कि बरामद खेप को बांग्लादेश से पश्चिम बंगाल के कूचबिहार मार्ग के जरिए भारत में लाया गया था और इसे वाराणसी तथा दिल्ली में अलग-अलग लोगों तक पहुंचाया जाना था।
डीआरआई का मानना है कि इस कार्रवाई से एक संगठित अंतरराज्यीय एवं अंतरराष्ट्रीय तस्करी नेटवर्क के महत्वपूर्ण सुराग मिले हैं और गिरोह के अन्य सदस्यों की तलाश के लिए अभियान तेज कर दिया गया है।
