Yousmarg Killing Puts Spotlight on LeT’s Surviving Network in Central Kashmir
Security agencies examine the activities and contacts of slain militant Yasir after Saturday operation in Budgam; his earlier association with Sulaiman Musa group under scrutiny
SRINAGAR: The killing of a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant in the Yousmarg mountains has opened a fresh line of investigation for security agencies, which are now trying to determine the extent of the slain operative’s network and his connections with other militants in Jammu and Kashmir.
The militant, identified as Yasir, was killed on Saturday in Budgam district during an operation by security forces in the upper reaches of Yousmarg.
He was identified by sources as a Pakistani LeT commander.
Rather than ending with the encounter, the operation has set off a wider examination of Yasir’s movements, associations and activities in the region.
Intelligence input led forces into the hills
The operation was launched after security agencies received information suggesting that militants were present in the remote high-altitude area.
Personnel from the Special Forces and 53 Rashtriya Rifles subsequently moved into the suspected area and came into contact with the militants.
An exchange of fire followed, during which Yasir was killed, according to sources.
The mountainous terrain around Yousmarg has been under heightened security attention as forces continue operations against militant groups and their support networks.
Yasir’s presence in the area had reportedly been under observation before the latest operation was mounted.
Yasir had operated outside Musa’s group
Investigators are particularly interested in Yasir’s earlier association with the group linked to Sulaiman Musa, also known as Hashim Moosa.
Sources said Yasir had separated from that group roughly a year before his death. He subsequently operated independently, although agencies continued to track his movements.
His reported emergence as an important LeT operative in the Yousmarg area has led investigators to examine whether he established new contacts after leaving Musa’s group and whether those links enabled him to maintain militant activity independently.
The investigation is expected to establish the scale of that network and identify any other operatives who may have remained connected to him.
Possible links to recent attacks being examined
Security agencies are also looking beyond Yasir’s immediate activities.
One of the key questions being examined is whether he had any connection with recent acts of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
Investigators are assessing whether he was involved in preparations for attacks, provided support to other militants or helped facilitate operations in the region.
The probe comes against the backdrop of intensified counter-terror efforts across the Union Territory, with security agencies focusing increasingly on networks rather than individual militants.
Musa’s legacy adds another dimension
The investigation into Yasir’s background has drawn attention to his reported association with Sulaiman Musa because of Musa’s alleged role in the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack.
Musa, who was also known as Hashim Moosa, was subsequently killed by security forces in the Dachigam forest area of Srinagar several months after the Pahalgam incident.
Yasir’s reported break from Musa’s group before the latter’s death is now being examined as part of the effort to understand how the militant network evolved after earlier counter-terror operations.
For security agencies, the significance of the Yousmarg operation therefore extends beyond the death of one militant.
The immediate focus is now on determining whether Yasir represented an isolated threat or was part of a wider structure that continues to operate in central Kashmir.

श्रीनगर: मध्य कश्मीर के बडगाम जिले में यूसमर्ग के ऊपरी पहाड़ी इलाके में शनिवार को हुई कार्रवाई के बाद सुरक्षा एजेंसियों का ध्यान अब मारे गए लश्कर-ए-तैयबा के आतंकी यासिर से जुड़े नेटवर्क पर केंद्रित हो गया है।
सूत्रों के अनुसार, यासिर पाकिस्तानी मूल का लश्कर कमांडर था।
सुरक्षा बलों की कार्रवाई में यासिर के मारे जाने के बाद जांच एजेंसियां उसके संपर्कों, आवाजाही और क्षेत्र में उसकी गतिविधियों का पता लगाने में जुटी हैं।
शुरुआती जानकारी के मुताबिक, वह करीब एक वर्ष से लश्कर के एक बड़े गुट से अलग होकर स्वतंत्र रूप से गतिविधियां चला रहा था।
पहाड़ी क्षेत्र में खुफिया सूचना पर शुरू हुई कार्रवाई
सुरक्षा एजेंसियों को यूसमर्ग के ऊंचाई वाले इलाके में आतंकियों की मौजूदगी की सूचना मिली थी। इसके बाद स्पेशल फोर्सेज और 53 राष्ट्रीय राइफल्स के जवानों ने संदिग्ध इलाके में अभियान शुरू किया।
तलाशी के दौरान सुरक्षा बलों का आतंकियों से सामना हुआ और गोलीबारी शुरू हो गई। इसी मुठभेड़ में यासिर मारा गया।
सूत्रों के मुताबिक, सुरक्षा एजेंसियों की नजर कुछ समय से यूसमर्ग क्षेत्र में उसकी गतिविधियों पर थी। दुर्गम पहाड़ी इलाकों में उसकी मौजूदगी ने अभियान की जरूरत को और महत्वपूर्ण बना दिया था।
सुलैमान मूसा के पुराने गुट से था संबंध
यासिर की पृष्ठभूमि में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण कड़ी उसका सुलैमान मूसा से जुड़ाव माना जा रहा है। मूसा को हाशिम मूसा के नाम से भी जाना जाता था।
सूत्रों के अनुसार, यासिर करीब एक साल पहले मूसा से जुड़े लश्कर गुट से अलग हो गया था। इसके बाद उसने कथित तौर पर अपनी गतिविधियां अलग तरीके से जारी रखीं।
अब जांचकर्ता यह पता लगाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं कि गुट से अलग होने के बाद यासिर ने किन लोगों से संपर्क बनाया और क्या उसने अपना अलग आतंकी ढांचा तैयार किया था।
उसके संपर्कों की पहचान से सुरक्षा एजेंसियों को मध्य कश्मीर में सक्रिय अन्य संभावित आतंकियों तक पहुंचने में मदद मिल सकती है।
हाल की आतंकी घटनाओं से संबंध की तलाश
यासिर की मौत के बाद जांच का एक अहम हिस्सा यह पता लगाना है कि क्या उसकी गतिविधियों का जम्मू-कश्मीर में हाल की किसी आतंकी घटना से संबंध था।
एजेंसियां यह भी जांच रही हैं कि क्या उसने किसी हमले की तैयारी में भूमिका निभाई, दूसरे आतंकियों को मदद दी या किसी आतंकी अभियान को आगे बढ़ाने के लिए सहयोग उपलब्ध कराया।
यह पड़ताल ऐसे समय में हो रही है जब जम्मू-कश्मीर में सुरक्षा बल आतंकियों के साथ-साथ उनके स्थानीय संपर्कों और सहयोगी नेटवर्क को भी निशाना बनाकर अभियान चला रहे हैं।
पहलगाम हमले की कड़ी भी जांच के घेरे में
यासिर के पुराने नेटवर्क की जांच इसलिए भी महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि उसका संबंध सुलैमान मूसा से बताया जा रहा है। मूसा को 2025 में पहलगाम में हुए आतंकी हमले के कथित मास्टरमाइंड में शामिल बताया गया था।
पहलगाम हमले के कुछ महीने बाद सुरक्षा बलों ने श्रीनगर के डाचीगाम वन क्षेत्र में मुठभेड़ के दौरान मूसा को मार गिराया था।
यासिर का मूसा के गुट से अलग होकर बाद में स्वतंत्र रूप से काम करना सुरक्षा एजेंसियों के लिए यह समझने का एक महत्वपूर्ण पहलू है कि उस नेटवर्क के बिखरने के बाद उसकी गतिविधियां किस रूप में आगे बढ़ीं।
अब यूसमर्ग की कार्रवाई के बाद सवाल केवल एक आतंकी के मारे जाने तक सीमित नहीं है। जांचकर्ता यह पता लगाने में लगे हैं कि यासिर अकेले काम कर रहा था या उसके पीछे ऐसा नेटवर्क मौजूद था, जिसकी गतिविधियां मध्य कश्मीर में अभी भी जारी हो सकती हैं।
