Congress Launches Ambitious Manifesto Ahead of Delhi Polls, Promises Major Reforms

With just days remaining before the Delhi Assembly elections, the Congress party on Wednesday unveiled its comprehensive manifesto, promising a range of social welfare measures and governance reforms aimed at addressing the needs of the capital’s citizens. The manifesto includes key commitments such as conducting a caste census, establishing a dedicated ministry for Purvanchalis, and implementing various financial assistance schemes to uplift vulnerable sections of society.

Congress, which lost power in Delhi to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2013, has presented a bold vision in its manifesto, pledging to introduce significant measures if voted back to power. Among the headline promises are a monthly grant of ₹2,500 to women, free electricity for consumption of up to 300 units, and subsidized LPG cylinders priced at ₹500.

The party has also vowed to provide free health insurance coverage of up to ₹25 lakh per family and distribute free ration kits to eligible households. These initiatives aim to address healthcare needs and food security, two critical areas for Delhi’s population.

The manifesto, spanning 22 focus areas, was formally released by Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav during an event where he was joined by Congress communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh. Yadav emphasized that the party’s vision for Delhi is centered on inclusivity, economic welfare, and addressing the city’s pressing challenges.

For the city’s unemployed youth, Congress has proposed a monthly financial assistance of ₹8,500 for one year, targeting educated individuals seeking job opportunities. Additionally, the manifesto outlines plans to launch 100 Indira Canteens across the capital, providing nutritious meals at a nominal cost of ₹5 per plate, an initiative inspired by similar projects in other Congress-ruled states.

Another significant promise in the manifesto is the establishment of a dedicated ministry for Purvanchalis, reflecting the party’s focus on recognizing and addressing the needs of the large migrant community from Purvanchal (Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar) residing in Delhi.

The Congress also targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government and the AAP-led Delhi government for their failure to tackle the critical issue of pollution. Speaking at the event, Jairam Ramesh criticized both governments for neglecting the alarming air quality crisis in Delhi. He stated that addressing pollution and implementing effective environmental policies would be among Congress’s top priorities if elected.

The party further reiterated its commitment to good governance, equitable resource distribution, and enhancing the quality of life for all citizens. With Delhi set to vote on February 5, the Congress manifesto seeks to rekindle voter confidence by focusing on economic empowerment, and public welfare, and addressing the city’s environmental and infrastructural challenges.

The results of the elections will be announced on February 8, determining whether Congress’s ambitious promises resonate with the people of Delhi and pave the way for its return to power in the capital.
