BJP Targets Rahul Gandhi After Shashi Tharoor Backs PM Modi’s Stand on Protection of Civilian Seafarers in Conflict Zones
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday launched a fresh political offensive against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after senior Congress parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor publicly endorsed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s position on the treatment of civilian seafarers in areas affected by armed conflicts.
The ruling party claimed that Tharoor’s remarks effectively weakened the Opposition’s criticism of the government’s handling of the issue.
Speaking about Prime Minister Modi’s recent interaction with US President Donald Trump and the evolving situation in West Asia, Tharoor said the Prime Minister was justified in emphasising that civilian sailors engaged in commercial shipping activities should not be regarded as combatants during military conflicts.
Referring to Indian sailors employed on vessels operating under different national flags, Tharoor noted that a significant number of Indians work as crew members on commercial ships across the world.
He stressed that as long as these individuals are civilians involved in trade and merchant shipping, they should not be treated as participants in armed hostilities.
Tharoor further said that Prime Minister Modi’s assertion that civilian seafarers should be exempt from military attacks was both reasonable and appropriate.
He also expressed hope that the ongoing ceasefire initiatives in the region would eventually pave the way for lasting peace and stability.
The Congress MP’s remarks stand in sharp contrast to the position adopted by the party leadership in recent days.
The Congress had criticised the Centre over the deaths of Indian sailors in conflict-hit parts of West Asia and had questioned the government’s response to the issue.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had accused the government of remaining silent over the deaths of Indian nationals in the region.
The BJP quickly seized upon Tharoor’s observations and used them to intensify its attack on Rahul Gandhi and the Congress leadership.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla shared a post on the social media platform X, describing Tharoor’s remarks as a “birthday gift” to Rahul Gandhi, whose birthday had been celebrated a day earlier.
According to Poonawalla, the Congress MP’s comments had effectively dismantled what he called Rahul Gandhi’s “false narrative” regarding the issue.
Poonawalla also recalled Tharoor’s previous remarks praising Prime Minister Modi, noting that the Congress leader had earlier described him as “visionary”, “dynamic”, an “excellent orator” and a leader who is leaving a significant mark on India’s development journey.
In a sarcastic remark, Poonawalla added that he hoped Rahul Gandhi would not remove Tharoor from the party for expressing such views.
Escalating the political attack further, the BJP spokesperson, in a video statement, claimed that Tharoor’s comments reflected a growing acknowledgment of Prime Minister Modi’s leadership across political lines.
He remarked that although Rahul Gandhi had celebrated his birthday the previous day, he had received no real political gift except Tharoor’s praise for the Prime Minister.
Poonawalla further alleged that Rahul Gandhi had already lost public support and claimed that he had been reduced to being a “reel leader rather than a real leader.”
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari also joined the attack, arguing that Tharoor’s remarks highlighted a clear contrast between the Congress MP and Rahul Gandhi on matters concerning national interest.
In a post on X, Bhandari said that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi always prioritised India’s national interests, Rahul Gandhi, according to him, consistently took positions that undermined those interests.
As of now, the Congress party has not issued an official response to the BJP’s latest criticism and comments regarding Shashi Tharoor’s remarks.

भारतीय जनता पार्टी (भाजपा) ने शनिवार को कांग्रेस नेता राहुल गांधी पर नया राजनीतिक हमला बोला, जब कांग्रेस के वरिष्ठ सांसद शशि थरूर ने संघर्ष प्रभावित क्षेत्रों में नागरिक नाविकों के साथ व्यवहार को लेकर प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के रुख का सार्वजनिक रूप से समर्थन किया। भाजपा ने दावा किया कि थरूर की टिप्पणी ने इस मुद्दे पर सरकार के खिलाफ विपक्ष की आलोचना को कमजोर कर दिया है।
अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति डोनाल्ड ट्रंप के साथ प्रधानमंत्री मोदी की हालिया बातचीत और पश्चिम एशिया की मौजूदा परिस्थितियों पर चर्चा करते हुए थरूर ने कहा कि प्रधानमंत्री का यह कहना बिल्कुल सही है कि व्यावसायिक जहाजों पर काम करने वाले नागरिक नाविकों को युद्धरत पक्षों के सैनिकों की तरह नहीं देखा जाना चाहिए।
उन्होंने कहा कि दुनिया भर में विभिन्न देशों के झंडे वाले जहाजों पर बड़ी संख्या में भारतीय नागरिक चालक दल के सदस्य और नाविक के रूप में कार्यरत हैं। जब तक वे नागरिक के रूप में व्यापारिक और वाणिज्यिक नौवहन सेवाओं में लगे हुए हैं, तब तक उन्हें किसी युद्ध का हिस्सा मानकर निशाना नहीं बनाया जाना चाहिए।
थरूर ने आगे कहा कि प्रधानमंत्री मोदी की यह बात पूरी तरह उचित है कि नागरिक नाविकों को सैन्य हमलों से छूट मिलनी चाहिए। उन्होंने यह भी उम्मीद जताई कि क्षेत्र में जारी युद्धविराम के प्रयास अंततः स्थायी शांति और स्थिरता का मार्ग प्रशस्त करेंगे।
कांग्रेस सांसद की यह टिप्पणी उनकी पार्टी के शीर्ष नेतृत्व द्वारा हाल में अपनाए गए रुख से बिल्कुल अलग दिखाई दी। कांग्रेस ने पश्चिम एशिया में संघर्ष के दौरान भारतीय नाविकों की मौत को लेकर केंद्र सरकार की आलोचना की थी और प्रधानमंत्री की प्रतिक्रिया पर सवाल उठाए थे। कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष मल्लिकार्जुन खड़गे ने सरकार पर भारतीय नागरिकों की मौत के मामले में चुप्पी साधने का आरोप लगाया था।
भाजपा ने थरूर के बयान को तुरंत राजनीतिक मुद्दा बनाते हुए राहुल गांधी और कांग्रेस नेतृत्व पर हमला तेज कर दिया।
भाजपा के राष्ट्रीय प्रवक्ता शहजाद पूनावाला ने सोशल मीडिया मंच एक्स पर एक पोस्ट साझा करते हुए कहा कि थरूर की टिप्पणी राहुल गांधी के लिए एक “जन्मदिन का उपहार” है, क्योंकि एक दिन पहले ही राहुल गांधी का जन्मदिन था। पूनावाला ने कहा कि कांग्रेस सांसद की टिप्पणी ने राहुल गांधी द्वारा गढ़े गए “झूठे राजनीतिक नैरेटिव” की पोल खोल दी है।
उन्होंने यह भी याद दिलाया कि शशि थरूर अतीत में प्रधानमंत्री मोदी को “दूरदर्शी”, “गतिशील”, “बेहतरीन वक्ता” और भारत पर गहरी छाप छोड़ने वाला नेता बता चुके हैं।
व्यंग्यात्मक अंदाज में पूनावाला ने कहा कि उन्हें उम्मीद है कि इस बयान के कारण राहुल गांधी, शशि थरूर के खिलाफ कोई कार्रवाई नहीं करेंगे।
एक वीडियो बयान में भाजपा प्रवक्ता ने अपना हमला और तेज करते हुए कहा कि थरूर की टिप्पणियां इस बात का संकेत हैं कि प्रधानमंत्री मोदी के नेतृत्व को राजनीतिक सीमाओं से परे भी स्वीकार्यता मिल रही है।
उन्होंने कहा कि राहुल गांधी ने भले ही एक दिन पहले अपना जन्मदिन मनाया हो, लेकिन उन्हें कोई वास्तविक राजनीतिक उपहार नहीं मिला, सिवाय इसके कि उनकी ही पार्टी के वरिष्ठ नेता ने प्रधानमंत्री मोदी की प्रशंसा की। पूनावाला ने यह भी दावा किया कि राहुल गांधी जनसमर्थन खो चुके हैं और अब वह “रियल नेता नहीं, बल्कि रील नेता” बनकर रह गए हैं।
भाजपा के एक अन्य प्रवक्ता प्रदीप भंडारी ने भी इस मुद्दे पर प्रतिक्रिया देते हुए कहा कि थरूर की टिप्पणी ने राष्ट्रीय हित के सवाल पर उनके और राहुल गांधी के बीच स्पष्ट अंतर को उजागर कर दिया है।
उन्होंने एक्स पर एक पोस्ट में कहा कि जब भी भारत के राष्ट्रीय हितों की रक्षा की बात आती है, प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी सबसे आगे खड़े दिखाई देते हैं, जबकि राहुल गांधी, उनके अनुसार, ऐसे मुद्दों पर अलग रुख अपनाते हैं।
फिलहाल, भाजपा की इन ताजा टिप्पणियों और शशि थरूर के बयान पर कांग्रेस पार्टी की ओर से कोई आधिकारिक प्रतिक्रिया सामने नहीं आई है।
